Green cleaning supplies - shown on Oprah
Our Lil' Family wrote: I was watching Oprah yesterday or the day before, the one where Nate remodeled a home. Anyway, they said something about cleaning the entire home with a Green product, I noticed the Clorox logo on the bottles they were using...anyone know the actual product name?
A&A'smommy replied: Its clorox green
I actually ALMOST bought them earlier this month when I was buying groceries but I would like to know more about them and find out if they are actually healthier
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: I'd stick with companies that I *know* care about the environment, not a big corporation that also sells nasty, polluting products.
Calimama replied: Can you recommend some cleaning supplies that are natural and less harsh?
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: http://biokleenhome.com/
I use their detergent, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, and am very happy with them. I get them through a private co-op. Drugstore.com sells it for cheap too.
Calimama replied: Awesome! Thank you
Okay one more question.. sorry. What do you use to clean your bathtub and toilets and stuff?
coasterqueen replied: I agree. With anything "green", "natural" or even "organic" you still have to be careful. Big huge companies that are going this route are ONLY going this route because we, the consumers, are requesting it. They aren't going this route because they care and they are not following what they really should be when it comes to being green, natural, or organic. It's these huge companies that are going to, one day soon, give these things that are truly green, natural, organic a very bad name. The FDA standards for natural/organic are truly very lenient and not true to what natural/organic really stands for. The smaller companies that truly follow what it means to be green/natural/organic are the safer ones.
Just like if you go to the store and notice that Heinz is making an organic ketchup. I can guaranty you that it is not any where near as organic as some of the smaller companies making an organic ketchup.
coasterqueen replied: Besides some of these smaller companies, your safest bet is to go with more natural things like vinegar, etc. Vinegar is a great cleaning substance to use. Of course I can't stand the smell or the thought of it, so I don't use it. My sitter uses vinegar to clean everything in her home.
luvmykids replied: I bought the window cleaner and the all purpose...mostly because I love the way they smell
Vinegar is a great household cleaner though, and the smell does go away In your toilet you can sprinkle baking soda and pour vinegar or peroxide over it, let it bubble for a minute, then brush.
Calimama replied: Awesome! Thank you!
Kaitlin'smom replied: apparently peroxide (you know that brown bottle thats about $1) does ALOT of things, let me see if I can find the list. I am going to try some of them.
luvmykids replied: It's really great for laundry, any kind of "organic" stain, as in blood, food, dirt, etc basically vanishes. You just have to be careful b/c it can bleach or wear a hole in the fabric
MoonMama replied: I actually use vinegar and baking soda quite a bit to clean.
mtnmom replied: I just saw the new Clorox brand at the grocery store but didn't try it. I have never had any luck with the grocery store non toxic cleaners. They worked poorly and were super expensive. We get all our non toxic stuff from Melaleuca now - It's better, safer & cheaper.
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: The baking soda, vinegar, & peroxide are great cleaners! I use them on everything.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: What about germs? I am sorry but I would rather send a little bleach down the toliet drain and know that it is clean.
Our Lil' Family replied: Yeah, I was thinking just that when I was cleaning my counter tops last night. If I have chicken on there, I want to be sure what I'm using will kill ecoli or salmonella, etc. Even the Clorox Green said it didn't contain bleach.
I am headed to Target today so I'll check out the Method line of products...they were mentioned on Treehugger.com as being pretty green.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I like the Method stuff OK but I still didn't feel like it was cutting grease in the kitchen as well or getting rid of soap scum, 6 year old toothpaste on the counter,ETC in the bathroom. Plus I think I need the smell of clorox to make me feel better about germs!
mommy~to~a~bunch replied: Actually, vinegar DOES kill germs by changing the acidity of the germ's environment. And of course getting rid of what they're feeding off of is a good idea, so just scrubbing down the counters or whatever you're concerned about is a good idea. You can add tea tree oil to the vinegar, or just mix it with water. TTO is a natural disinfectant.
I also have a portable handheld steam cleaner that I use on bathroom & kitchen surfaces occasionally.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I have a steamer too...It freaks me out when it lifts so much grime out even when things look sparkly clean I Don't take the time to use it everytime I clean the bathrooms, kitchen, floor ETC. because it takes too long to use. I admit that I am a huge germ a phobe and I really NEED the smell of Parsons or Clorox to make me feel better about everything being clean....
Our Lil' Family replied: Dang it, I forgot to look at Target, I was too hungry to think about what else I needed! Oh well, just another reason to go back!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: That's my girl!!!!
