Grrrr!!! Why do people do that. - rant, vent, rant, vent....

MommyToAshley wrote: OK, I know we have discussed this before... lots of times... but I can't believe people send their kids to school sick.

I dropped Ashley off at school today and the kid that sits next to her was coughing and hacking non-stop. His nose was all gooey and crusty and he looked flushed. It was obvious he was sick. The teacher sent him to the nurse's office to check his temp, but this is after he had gotten his germs all over the table Ashley sits at. I told Ashley to wash her hands and I just went over to the sink and got a wipe and wiped the table down. I wonder what the teacher thought when I did that... she probably thinks I am one of those meddling moms. Oh well, I don't care, that was just gross and I didn't want Ashley or the other kids touching that.

momofone replied: I know what you mean, I was up at 12:00 last night giving my daughter cough medicine. It hard when kids are sick. I try and prevent colds too.

Kaitlin'smom replied: ewwww and good for you. I hope Ashley does not get sick.

luvmykids replied: I'm with you, as you mentioned before, not only because I don't want my kids to get sick but because that poor kid is probably miserable and a day at home taking it easy probably sounds very good to him sad.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I didn't go to the gym all last week because Jordan was snotty and hacking. I didn't want to spread her germs all over the child care. I don't get why other people don't think of this. Might be less of it going around if we kept our kids home when they are sick. sleep.gif

My2Beauties replied: Ick! I'm glad you were able to intervene and saw what you did, or else it could have been not wiped up. Sorry, some parents just don't think.

jcc64 replied: Corey is home sick from school as we speak. I am by no means defending the practice, b/c it drives me nuts too. But many times, working parents can't take off work for every cough, sniffle, or runny nose. I know from a public health standpoint it's selfish to send a kid with a cold to school, but business is business, and if an employee is out more than a handful of times a month, alot of bosses lose their patience in a hurry. Some people don't have extended family nearby, and home daycare is no different- there are other kids there.
I'm sure most parents don't feel good about having to send a sick child to school. Sometimes it's just an act of desperation. I'd say it would be great if companies in general were more sympathetic to the stresses of 2 parent working families. But that's asking alot.

DVFlyer replied: I always wondered if there would be a market for a "Sick Kid" daycare. Obviously, not a medical establishment for anything serious, but something where the "cough and cold kids" could go.

Just like some doctor's offices have a "sick" side of the waiting room there could be a "sick" daycare.

Calimama replied: Ugh, surely the mom saw how sick he was when she dropped him off?? I hope Ashley doesn't get sick!

jcc64 replied: Maybe some day in the not too distant future, schools could have a "sick" classroom- where kids who are not quite sick enough to be sent/stay home, could all congregate away from the other kids. Teachers could send their work down- the kids could eat lunch apart from the well kids, etc. More 4 and hassle for the schools, but from a public health standpoint, not a bad idea.
Just a thought- not sure how others would feel about it, but maybe it's a step in the right direction?

Swood75 replied: I try to use my best judgement when my kids are sick about sending them to school..My son came home from school the other day with a list of what the kids are "expected" to go to school with..They had bronchitis, pnemonia, pink eye, croup etc the list went on and I was AMAZED!! There is NO way I will send my kids to school with any of that..The schools are CRAZY for wanting you to send your kids when they are sick especially with any of that...

grapfruit replied:
I've never heard of that! How could they want you to send a child to school w/pneumonia!?!? blink.gif

My friend (who is 24) had it last year and about wound up in the hospital b/c she was still going to work! They finally made her go home and rest so she could get over it.

gr33n3y3z replied:
I had pnemonia and it took me 4 months to kick it I guess they dont want kids missing that much of school.
Prolly most of what was on the list once medicated for 48 hours you cant get any way or its to late any how.
But No way in heck would I send a child to school with pink eye until it was 100% cleared up most likely thats where they got it.

A&A'smommy replied: YUCK.... some parents don't think!! wink.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
I think that is a GREAT idea, its also good for OUR sick kids who might miss something important because they have a cold thumb.gif

holley79 replied: mad.gif That and why do they allow them at the park when they are sick and it's cool out! A little boy went up to Annika at the park Sat, hugged her then coughed in her face. I was furious. The mom was like, "Oh sorry he's been sick for a day or two now." growl.gif

kimberley replied: blush.gif i am one of those moms now but i never used to be. James has had medical problems and is sick a lot in the winter. they called the board truancy officer and threatened to suspend if i kept keeping him home. i asked them if i was supposed to send him sick and get all the other kids sick.. their response... YES. if he wasn't bed ridden, he was to come to school and if he worsened, they'd send him home then. mad.gif

fingers crossed that Ashley doesn't get sick and i wish more parents stood up and said something so maybe i wouldn't be strong-armed into sending my sick kids to school.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
i intermittently get a child who comes when she's sick. I only get her when her regular daycare won't accept her. But, I get double my rate. wink.gif

My kids haven't been sick with anything she's had so far. She's been coming for almost 18 months now, probably one or two days every 2 or 3 weeks.

My2Beauties replied: You know I will say this though, mos tof the time when kids are just generally coughing or have a slight runny nose it's usually allergies too wink.gif Hanna kept a runny nose when she was real small and it was always allergies, nomatter what you do their nose runs.

Also, they did the same thing to MIL Kimberly, Kenny has missed 5 days of school this year already due to being sick and they called her and told her one more day and they are calling a truancy officer. She said well am I supposed to send him to school when he's sick, they said yes ohmy.gif They said if he's that sick we'll send him to the sick room and you can come pick him up. So the other day she had to send him, he got off the bus, went straight to the sick room and within 30 minutes they were calling her to come get him...he had a touch of pneumonia ohmy.gif Makes no sense the school would do this. I guess though some parents keep their kids home for every sniffle so they have to put a rule in place. sleep.gif
