HELP! - Handprint Ornaments?

stella6979 wrote: Ok, so I thought I'd do some of those handprint ornaments that you make from dough for the Grandparents, but I just can't seem to figure it out. I've googled the recipes and have tried a couple different ones but know matter how much I knead the dough it just doesn't seem to stick. I'll put her hand in it, but when we go to pull her hand out the dough comes with it. huh.gif Does anyone know how in the world I can get this to work? I already wasted so much flour and sugar but I'm determined to make these darn things. biggrin.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I've bought the kits from Hobby Lobby before, but I haven't made it from scratch. That's a neat idea though! thumb.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Try coating her hand with oil (any kind - baby oil, vegetable oil, whatever) first. That should keep it from sticking.

Jamison'smama replied: I have a good recipe using cinnamon and applesauce--works well and smells wonderful.

MoonMama replied: Plaster-of-paris (sp) from Hobby Lobby is what I have found works the best. And its super cheap for a HUGE thing. Good luck, I couldn't get any of the doughs to work when I did the same thing with Braedin last year.

stella6979 replied:
Doh!! Thanks so much, I'll definitely try that. smile.gif

Hmmm......you've got me interested now. Do share, please. smile.gif

Jamison'smama replied: Cinnamon Craft Dough

2 cups of cinnamon (if you can, buy in bulk--this is cheapest)
1 1/2 cups applesauce
1/4 cup white school glue

I've also seen it withoug the glue

1 Cup cinnamon
1 Cup applesauce

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I bet that smells Christmas-y. Great idea. TFS

Kaitlin'smom replied: then do you bake it or let it dry?

danahas4monkeys replied: We just did the cinnamon and glue ones at my sons pre school tuesday you just let them dry! we have one that his sister did last year and it still smells good we used ginger and cloves in the mix too smells sooo good! we're supposed to decorate them today but school was cancelled due to weather. Here are a few different recipes
Cinnamon Christmas Ornaments
Recipe 1:

The recipe that I use is

* 1/2 cup ground cinnamon,
* 1/3 cup applesauce, and
* 1 Tbs. Tacky glue

Mix in bowl and stir until well blended. Work mixture in hands for three minutes to form a ball. If it is too dry, add applesauce, if too wet, add more cinnamon. Knead ball on cinnamon-sprinkled surface until it holds together well. I roll this out and use cookie cutters for the shapes. I also use a drinking straw to cut a hanging hole. These can be air dried for 24 to 48 hours. Turn several times. They can also be baked in a slow oven.

Recipe 2:

* 1 lb. powdered cinnamon
* 3/4 c. applesauce
* 1/8 c. orris root powder (optional)
* 1/8 oz. apple fragrance (optional)

Add scent to the orris root and mix well. Combine with the cinnamon powder and add the applesauce. Add a tiny bit of apple cider if it's too dry, or more cinnamon if too wet. Roll out no thinner than 1/4" and cut out shapes. Use a straw to cut a hole at the top if making a hanging ornament. Dry in a dehydrator or air-dry. Let dry thoroughly and sand the rough edges with a fingernail file and paint with fabric paints.

Recipe 3:

* 1-4 oz. can of cinnamon
* 1 T. cloves
* 1 T. nutmeg
* 3/4 cup applesauce
* 2 T. white glue

Mix dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients Mix thoroughly. Roll out and cut shapes. Let dry several days, turning over frequently. Do not eat!!!

Recipe 4:

* 1 c. cinnamon
* 1 t. nutmeg
* 1 t. allspice
* 1 t. ground cloves
* 1 c. applesauce

Combine dry ingredients. Add applesauce a little at a time, mixing thoroughly. Roll out and cut shapes. Allow to dry 4-5 days. Paint after completely dry.

Recipe 5:

* 1 Cup Cinnamon
* 1T Cloves
* 1T Nutmeg
* 3/4 C Applesauce
* 2T White glue

combine cinnamon, cloves & nutmeg. Add applesauce & glue, stir to combine, work mixture with hands for 2-3 minutes. Divide into 4 parts. Roll each to 1/4" thickness. Use straw or toothpick for hole. Place on wire rack & allow to dry at room temp. Turn after a day. (takes about 2 days to dry). I use white fabric paint to decorate, looks like frosting.

Kaitlin'smom replied: thank you for all those, I think Kait and I will make some this weekend. We made ornaments one year and seems they were more of a hit than I knew so we will make some this year. Now I just need more cutters.

Jamison'smama replied:
I take a wooden manicue stick and trace hands or other things we've cut out---you can do leaves etc. Then use a sharp knife to cut out the design. That was fun too.

danahas4monkeys replied: Oh and btw, we just used a pencil to poke a hole in the top of our ornaments (while still soft of course) so you can string ribbon through them!

Boo&BugsMom replied: You can use playdough too, or Crayola makes a drying clay that you can also paint afterwards when it's dry. happy.gif

holley79 replied: I made Salt Dough Ornaments with Annika this year:

1/2 c salt
1 c flour
1/2 c water

Mix well and roll out. Preheat over to 250 and bake for 2 hours.

momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied:
The kids and I are doing them this Sunday. I remember doing them with my mom and brother when I was around 5. I still have some of them too. After mom baked them she let us paint them.

holley79 replied:
We use to do that with my mom also. I learned this weekend that water colors paint doesn't work on the ornaments. emlaugh.gif I had to go back to dollar tree and get acrylic paints. emlaugh.gif
