HELP! puter problems?
kimberley wrote: in the past hour my computer has restarted twice without me being in the room. does this mean i have a virus or something? what should i do? do i need to run scandisk? tia.
Elle replied: I'm a computer illiterate, so I freak out every time the darn thing does something weird... I'd run the scandisk and then the antivirus, just to check. Or call somebody who knows about the subject! Sorry I wasn't much help
beckamouse replied: run scandisk. call the manufacturer afterwards and tell them what you found
pinka_star replied: Sorry I'm not much help, anytime something goes wrong with my computer I call DH and he saves the day. I hope it's not a virus though!!! Good luck.
JaSaAn replied: There is a new virus going around that shuts down your pc, while connected to the internet..

Look around about here, i think its called the sasser or something...
HTH
CantWait replied: Sounds like sassar, sorry
kimberley replied: this is what is happening! and in the file name when it shuts down it has "lsass" in there. any idea how i got it? we never open emails with attachments.
CantWait replied: This one apparently just finds suseptible (sp?) computers on it's own. No outside help needed
kit_kats_mom replied: I think you can get this one just by being connected to the internet. I think it probabaly looks for people without firewall protection and invades. I'm sorry you have to go though this.
I HATE VIRUS WRITERS!
kimberley replied: ok my next question is dumb, but how do i get rid of it? do i have to take it to a puter shop or is there something i can do?
amynicole21 replied: Do a google search on Sasser and there will be tons of sites that come up with info. Here's the site for Microsoft:

Good luck, and I hope you can clean it!
kimberley replied: i did the security update for windows and it seems to be okay. it hasn't restarted in about 30 min. keep your fingers crossed for me!
TLCDad replied: Hi all sorry I have not been around much the last several days.
Here is a link to download a tool to remove the Sasser virus:

As always do a windows update at least once week and keep your antivirus software up2date with its virus definitions. And nowadays a firewall is a must.
alice&arik replied: So that isn't for windows XP? or is it? How do you know if you have it, they were talking about it restarting, but is that all it does?
kimberley replied: i used the link that JaSaAn gave me and then did windows security update and now it seems to be fine. i have XP too and it worked. it was really weird because my puter is in the kitchen and it seemed every time i left the room, the puter restarted itself. so i sat here and watched and a warning would come up and say something like "system shutting down. save any unfinished work and log off. shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM" then there was a url that had "lsass" in it next. it gave i think 8 minutes before shutting down. in about 2 hours it restarted at least 6 times and only if i was connected to the net. total pain!
