Headaches in kids question - about Lexi
lisar wrote: I just had to go and get Lexi from school cause she has a headache. And she said it was just getting worse. So ofcourse I went and got her. Well she has been getting headaches alot latley. I know she had one over the weekend and now today. They seem to be comming more often. Here is the things I have done.
Her eyes are fine I have had them checked I know she isnt dehydrated She takes a multi vitamin Her eating isnt off cause its the same as it has always been she is getting plenty of sleep she isnt stressed about school it comes so easy for her. She says that her ears dont hurt. (thats the first thing I always check)
Any other ideas it could be? Or should I just take her to the dr.
msoulz replied: Could it be migraines? My son started getting them at 4 and they seem to be less frequent now but he still gets them. The only trigger we can find for him is if he does not eat but sometimes we can't figer it out at all. I have a friend whose 13 year old daughter is triggered by changes in barometric pressure. But for some it is a specific food, or combination of foods and who know s what else?
We went through the pediatrician and then to a ped neurologist and everything checks out just fine. There was only one medication that we could try for him and it did nothing. We do find that if we catch it early ibuprofen will likely knock out the headache before it gets into vomitting and the other delights that come with migraines.
momofone replied: Is she on the computer at all? I know I get headaches from the computer sometimes.
lisar replied: No more than 30 minutes and thats once a week at school. At home she normally dont get on them.
momofone replied: My daughter had some side effects from sucralose and artifical sweetner it's in some drinks and cereals. Just a heads up.
jcc64 replied: Well, Lisa, it sounds like you've eliminated all of the obvious causes. I used to get ALOT of headaches as a kid, and it used to freak my mom out b/c I had a massive head injury as a toddler, and she thought it was a result of that. (it wasn't) After I got older, for whatever reason, they just kind of went away. Sometimes you never know why, kwim? Some kids run fevers, some kids get alot of stomache aches, some kids get headaches. I'd go to the dr, run the requisite tests, but be prepared for the fact that there may never be a reason. e
lisar replied: Well we gave her some tylenol and the headache went away but now 2 hours later she says it is comming back again. So what do I do?
lisar replied: I am prepared for that. But like any mom I wanna KNOW its nothing. KWIM... I still worry.
gr33n3y3z replied: I hope she feels better Keep us posted on how she feels or goes to the Dr's
amynicole21 replied: Sophia says she gets headaches a lot. I told her ped and he said it was unusual for kids her age to get them, which of course freaked me right out. Now she mostly complains of stomach aches, but that is usually when she is upset about something or nervous... I know that trigger now at least
I would have her lay in a quiet dark room for a while and close her eyes... my migraine triggers are hormonal I think - I've never been able to pin those down either. The only thing that helps is to lay quietly.
You might teach her this trick which is temporary, but helps... have her squeeze the pressure point on the fatty part between her thumb and pointer finger for a minute or so... my headaches go away when I do that, but usually come back quickly. Temporary relief at best.
Also, have you considered allergies? Springtime does wacky things to my sinuses, too...
ZandersMama replied: I get migranes and have since I was really young. My trigger is strong smells, usually floral. Potporri, air fresheners, ect.
Sounds like migranes to me.
sparkys2boys replied: Nothing much to add to what the others have said.. wanted to send some and I hope it passes quickly for her.
lisar replied: She has allergies but the only thing that has ever triggered them is fresh cut grass. Thats what gets her the most on them
Kentuckychick replied: It "could" be any number of things (migraines, stress, sinuses, ect...) but honestly, and this is what I tell the mother's who have questions about their children in my care, if YOU are concerned about it enough that it's weighing on your mind then it absolutely can not hurt to get it checked out by her ped. I mean it would be a pain to take her and have it be absolutely nothing right? But if it puts your mind at ease it's completely 100% worth it.
I have heard so many people say that children don't get headaches... I look at them and want to laugh. I very distinctly remember my headaches as a child and how horrible they were. I now know that I have migraines and I'm sure that was the beginning of them for me. The little girl I nanny for is 7 now, but has been having migraines since she was 4. Her symptoms are still mainly the nausea and sensitivity to light more than the pain, but her head does hurt, she complains of "seeing spots" and she can smell something a mile away when it's going on.
Migraines are a genetic disease so if you, your husband or any close relatives get them then it could definitely be a clue.
lisar replied: Well I called the dr and they said to take her and have her eyes checked again. So she has an appt to go to the eye dr on thursday and they also told me to put her on a high protien diet until then. They said if the eye dr finds nothing wrong then CALL them back and they will see her same day to check it out. So I am gona cook her alot of protien and take her to eye dr. I will let yall all know how it all pans out.
Thanks everyone.
