Healthy non-stick options?

PrairieMom wrote: I just used the last little bit of my spray on -non stick cooking stuff the other day, all the while thinking about the atmosphere and landfill. rolleyes.gif Kinda took some of the fun out of making blue berry muffins. laugh.gif
Anyway, What can I do instead?

coasterqueen replied: Butter and flour?

lisar replied: I use crisco. I know its not the healthiest thing but it is better than butter.

amynicole21 replied: At William Sonoma (and I'm sure many other places) you can get a pump-type sprayer that you can put your own oil into. It works on compression rather than some other method... do aerosols still harm the environment? I thought they banned CFCs... unsure.gif Anyway, Olive Oil is the healthiest choice for you. happy.gif

Here's one from Crate and Barrel

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
Actually, butter is better than shortening.

my2girls replied: Pampered Chef has a refillable spray/pump can that you fill with your own oil.
I use mine all the time and it only cost $10.50 and it came with a replacement pump also! Well worth the price. You can find similar items at Kohl's /William -Sonoma ( etc.) stores but they were pricey..around $25-$35 without replacement parts.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: My mom uses coconut oil - it's solid and looks like crisco but it's supposed to be good for you. I can always taste a little bit of coconut in the stuff she makes though - like hash browns - so I don't really like it but if you don't mind the taste it does work pretty good. smile.gif She used to use lethicin - I'm not sure why she switched to coconut oil.

She has one of those oil spritzers too that she has light olive oil in.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
thumb.gif I use coconut oil too. It's very healthy for you!

gr33n3y3z replied: buy a cheap ole spray bottle and fill it up

lisar replied:
crisco has 3grams of fat and butter has 7grams of fat. Butter has more saturated fat then crisco does. It states on them I just read the back of one at my Granny's house to confirm it.

coasterqueen replied:
You have to look at the essential fats in them, though. The fats in butter are much healthier for the brain than the fats in Crisco. Well, at least this is the case for all natural butter. The fats in real butter are very very good for the brain and far outweigh, IMO - but that's just my opinion. tongue.gif

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
yessmiley.gif Butter is natural, saturated fats. Shortening is artificial partially hydrogenated fats.

An excellent article that expalins all of this is here: http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/o...l#hydrogenation .

My2Beauties replied: Butter is actually healthier than Crisco, Mollie and Karen are right. Butter is natural. I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil all the time now, I no longer use cooking sprays or anything of that nature.

lisar replied:
Thats fine. But I use crisco because alot of what I cook calls for crisco so I use it. Like my homeade biscuits I use it for them.

boyohboyohboy replied: I use a soy butter

holley79 replied: I use the Pampered Chef Kitchen Spritzer. I just refill it with olive oil.

PrairieMom replied: So, even for baking like greasing muffin tins I can use olive oil?
I need to get one of those spritzers. wink.gif Thanks! thumb.gif

luvmykids replied:
I don't even buy muffin papers anymore, the spray works great, they just slide right out! thumb.gif

holley79 replied:
For muffins I use either canola or coconut oil.

mommy~to~a~bunch replied:
Mine do too, but I use either butter or coconut oil in its place. DH doesn't like coconut anything, so I just use butter.
