How do you say it?
Our Lil' Family wrote: I pick on Aimee about this and I noticed Dana says it the same way in one of her threads. So if you were to say, "he was playing ____ the floor" which one would you use?
Hillbilly Housewife replied: if my kids were playing IN the floor, I'd be thinking I have more problems that I thought.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: On the floor...In the car It drives me nuts when people say they got off the car...why were you ON the car to begin with? In the floor is a pretty typical southern thing and doesn't drive me crazy.....
3xsthefun replied: On the floor.
luvmykids replied: I say on the floor, I didn't realize other people said differently
jcc64 replied: Never, ever heard someone say "in the floor" or "off the car." What are some other weird Southern sayings- I love dialects.
Our Lil' Family replied: When we're in the car arriving at a store we'll say, "are you going to get down?" instead of "are you going to get out". I think it has something to do with big trucks in the south?? IDK I try to say, get out but I have to make an effort to say it correctly.
luvmykids replied: Not really a saying, but when we were in GA everyone called flip flops "slaps"...."Oh honey, you about to lose your slap"
Calimama replied: ON the floor. In the floor would have a different meaning wouldn't it?
Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Totally cracks me up!!!! I remember sitting at your house telling Ethan, "Ethan, get in the floor!!!" Girl, you looked at me like I lost my marbles! I've never in my life had anyone correct me for saying that! I never thought about it not making sense...it's something that's just been passed down.
I still say it. BUT, I have never heard of "off the car" or "get down from the car"
A&A'smommy replied: LOL depends I have never actually thought about it. Other southern sayings? you mean you guys don't say stuff like that I will have to think of a few and come back to you... but I will say that most people in ALABAMA don't say "get off the car" I would like at someone like they were crazy for saying that.
Danalana replied: I just wanted to point out that "off the car" is not a Southern thing I've never even heard of it. ALSO, I use "In" the floor AND "on" the floor...just depends on my mood, apparently.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: For me it depends on where I'm sitting. If I'm on the floor, I tell the kids to get "in the floor" with me. If I'm on the couch I tell them to get "on the floor."
Danalana replied: Oooooh, appareltly I would still say "in"
HuskerMom replied: I say on the floor. I've never heard of in the floor or off the car. The only time I'd ever use that one I think is if I was in Dh's jacked up truck, then I'd probably say I'm getting off the truck.
youngmomofone replied: on the floor.
My grandma used to say winder instead of window I know she had a saying that had something to do with windows that didn't make sense, but I can't remember it
jem0622 replied: i can't answer the poll because they have two different meanings. i have a degree in english and have 12 yrs of writing under my belt.
For example:
Jenny sits on the floor. The builder put nails in the floor. -or- There are cracks in the floor.
Cece00 replied: how can a child play IN the floor? That doesnt make sense
