How many steps do you think you can take?

coasterqueen wrote: My girlfriend's office bought all the employees pedometers and challenged them to walk 10,000 steps a day to *get healthy*. She took the challenge and asked me if I'd join her for moral support. We are long distance so the moral support is all online. I took her challenge and bought a cheapy pedometer last weekend.
Sunday was the first day I used it and suprisingly enough I walked over 11,000 steps. I thought it was too good to be true although I was all over the place that day. I re-read the instruction booklet and realized I needed to *tweak* the thing for accuracy. So I did that and well I only walked 4400 steps on Monday. Yesterday I walked 4200 steps. It's harder than one thinks!

Anyone know if this 10,000 steps a day really helps you lose weight? I've calculated that it's roughly 340 steps from my car to my desk. It's roughly 50 steps to the bathroom (not sure if that's both ways or one way, can't remember). I just don't know how to get 10,000 steps in a day with working at a desk and running after two kids at night til 9 pm. wacko.gif

ediep replied: I definately don't take that many steps anymore, but when I was going to the gym everyday, I would because I was on the stairmaster or the treadmill

I have been walking on my treadmill while Jay is at preschool...so maybe I'm getting close

booey2 replied: I have heard of this before and I know people who do it and swear by it. Just be carefull with your pedometer because some of the cheaper ones will count steps even if you brush your finger across it without taking a single step.

It never hurt to try the 10, 000 steps. thumb.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I have been thinking of getting one so I can count my step, but I woudl aslo liek o know if that ammount will help to drops some LBS...guess its off to look for one

coasterqueen replied:
I"ve noticed this too. So I adjusted the setting to the hardest one, which seems to be doing the trick. Although if you count your steps just say to the bathroom from the kitchen or something you'd be amazed at how many steps that is. I was shocked that it was 340 steps from the car to my desk. I would only have to do that 29.5 times a day and I'd make it. tongue.gif I already do it 4 times a day.

Edit: Course I know I can't do it 29.5 times a day though, lol.

moped replied: My boss and I used to do that while I was pg I think - and he said that is true......he would have like 22,000 steps without even trying, I would get to about 9000..........I think it does work, but I would think more than 10,000 would be helpful for weight loss.

mammag replied:
laugh.gif Can you imagine the looks you'd be getting if you went back and forth 15 times in the morning and after work?? That was such a funny picture!

coasterqueen replied: LOL Jeanie. My coworker and boss would probably wonder if I'm having *bathroom* issues if I was leaving the office that much. Yeah, I calculated how many times I'd have to walk to the bathroom at work and it's like 200 times a day. That's a lot of water drinking to make that many trips and I think I'd float away. rolling_smile.gif

moped replied: rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: somedays I feel like I am going to the bathroom that much laugh.gif

so where can I find a step meter? not to expensive?

coasterqueen replied:
I got one at K's Merchandise for $15 but you can get them at Walmart, Target, anywhere like that. Probably in the electronics section OR like at Target I'd think in their sports/fitness section.

If you get a cheapy make sure you read the instructions on *tweaking* it so that it's more accurate because they can count steps that they really shouldn't.

Kaitlin'smom replied:
thanks I will go look for one today. and aim for 10,000 steps a day

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I think I have one of those pedometers that I got somewhere. I will have to find it and take that challenge. It will be hard to do at work because I sit at a desk all day!!! tongue.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I got one and it is a bit on the sentive side so I will have to tweek it a bit. It will be hard as I also have a desk job, and the booklet I got with it has great plans on getting you there. I have to do this for 3-5 days to see the average and then work up from there. I am wering it now so it will only be for 1/2 day today, but it will be fun to see what that is. I was going to go for a walk tongiht as long as its not raning

coasterqueen replied:
Cool! I'll be interested to see how many steps you get in a day. I'm already at 4200 but because I'm drinking more water I'm going to the bathroom more, lol. Also, like there is a short way to get to the bathroom in our building and a long way. I'm purposely taking the long way. Or like tonight when I go home instead of stopping in the driveway to get the mail and then drive up to the house I'll drive up to the house then walk down to get the mail. Just little things like that can add up too. Along with long walks like you are talking about. Hopefully it's not raining here tonight so I can get one in too.

luvbug00 replied: With all the Dog walking I easily take that many steps, but i'm still a chunky monkey!! dry.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
so should we start another thread tomorrow with out results?

coasterqueen replied:
Yes, let's do so. I'm game. thumb.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
any one else??? mine will offically start tomorrow, but I will let you know what a hafl day was like tomorrow
