How much are you paid? - Had a job interview.

BabyOwen427 wrote: Today I had a job interview for a receptionist at the hospital clinic and I assume it went well. I hate interviews. But they said that starting pay is 8.50 an hour that seems a bit low to me I was expecting at least 10 an hour. I am not sure I can afford to take the job at only 8.50 because I will have to also pay for child care and my dh is wanting to change jobs, so I will need to make enough to support us while he changes. I don't know. Is this an average pay for this position?

This may help:
I live in Oklahoma.
The job is full-time M-F 8-5
Anwsering phones, pulling patient charts, scheduling patients, revieving money and customer service.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

My3LilMonkeys replied: A lot of it depends on the area you live in I think...around here receptionist positions start at 7 or 8 if you have no experience, maybe 9 if you do.

MyBabeMaddie replied: I'd say that sounds about right for here at least

luvmykids replied: The range here for something like that is 8-10 just depending on the company.

CantWait replied: Well this is the type of job I'm looking for. Although I'm in Canada, in Alberta, I would have been paid anywhere from $12-$15 an hour doing this. Here in New Brunwick I would only be paid $8.00. Part of the reason why it's so hard to just accept any job here.

I think of it this way, if this is really something you want to do, then you'll do without making a lot of money until your little one is in school. If it's not something you REALLY want to do, then think if you really want to spend that much time away from home and make next to nothing.

Good Luck with your decision.

Calimama replied: Sounds right for your area. wink.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: there are a few sites. I think salary.com is one.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Our receptionists probably make less here in my hospital lab. Southeast Idaho. Maybe $8/hour

hopefulmomtobe replied: I started here as a receptionist 6 years ago and was paid 27k/year.

Edited: Here = Georgia...sorry, left that part out! smile.gif

JP&KJMOM replied: Not sure what part of OK you are in but when we lived in Stillwater I hired many women for the same type of position starting at $8.

mom21kid2dogs replied:
Holy Cow!!! I'm a MSW with 22 years experience and I made only about 8K more than that!!!

coasterqueen replied: Depends on the company as well as the area you are in. My company would hire you at much more per hour than that, but it's all due to semantics of the company.

I'd say that's about right for the type of position and experience/education has a lot to factor in there as well.

lisar replied: Here I would hire them at about $10.00 an hour. Just depends on the economy there I guess.

hopefulmomtobe replied:

I think our company pays crazy money, but I wont complain...I have been with them for 6 years now and I am in Accounts Payable making 37,600 /yr not including bonuses! I have no college degree for it either, just onsite training here. Isn't that insane!

amymom replied:
I am a hard worker and could use some bonuses! Any openings???

Boo&BugsMom replied: Around here you'd probably get between $10-12 an hour. Perhaps it's your area. You can always check other places and ask what they start at to see if you're getting jipped or not. ETA: around here $8.50 would BE your daycare. I can never understand working to just pay daycare. Might as well not work then. unsure.gif

Our Lil' Family replied:
You answered yourself, lol. That's why I never went to Grad School....to be a social worker you really have to love your job cause the pay is not good! Took me a year out of college to realize I wasn't getting far up the pay scale in this field!

My2Beauties replied: I'd say that is probably about right, but my company pays their receptionist about $10.50 TO $11.00 an hour, the only reason I know is because I am in payroll tongue.gif But my company pays really good money, they are like one of the top 5 employers in my city. Doesn't mean I like working for them though dry.gif You put up with a lot of crap to get the money you get...believe me. dry.gif

Jackie012007 replied: gosh I made more than that working as a cashier at Wal*mart of all places! Here in NY you'd make about 11-13/hr

moped replied: It seems low to me but in Calgary (like Marie said) the job market is a bit nutty and they are paying crazy money for things. Our receptionist for a small oil and gas co. makes about $38-40K/year I would guess........but that is high.

I would say somewhere between 10-12 would be reasonable.

If that is what they are paying I highly doubt they would budge if that is what the budget is for that position.........
