I Didn't get the Apartment....Discrimination!

Kirstenmumof3 wrote: mad.gif I'm so angry I could cry! The landlord left a message for me, letting me know that he had rented it. He appologized that he couldn't rent it to me, but felt that with 3 children it would disrupt the quiet atmosphere of the building. Just from the questions he asked, I know there were other reasons. Like what if I lost my job and was relying soley on my ODSP cheques, what if I got sick again? What my mental illness was and I really don't think he had the right to ask me that! I know not all landlords are like this, but it still bothers me! And I know eventually I will find apartment, I just hope it's soon!

Teesa®© replied: Discrimination is illegal. Try phoning your MP and tell him/her and see what they can do.

ETA: DO NOT ERASE THE LANDLORDS PHONE MESSAGE!!!!

Although, you may not want to live there with that landlord afterwards, depends on if his nose gets all out of joint.

Why/how did he know about your medical issues???? huh.gif

Sorry you didn't get that one sad.gif

luvmykids replied: I'm sorry you didn't get it, but I agree you'll probably be better off with a landlord who is more welcoming of kids hug.gif hug.gif

sad.gif I did erase the message, I wasn't thinking lastnight I was just really upset. He found out about my disability because he asked if I was working and when I told him it was part time he wanted to know how I would be able to afford that apartment. I explained to him that I was on the Ontario Disability Support Program and then he asked what my disability was, since I was able to work. I figured why lie, it's not going to get me anywhere. So I told him I had a mental illness. Then he was concerned that if I lost my job and was just relying on ODSP, how would I be able to afford it. I guess without the message there really isn't anything I can do.

gr33n3y3z replied: I would say next time dont tell anyone anything.
I still dont understand why your leaving where your at now bc around these parts once your in a place your in unless you break the rules of the program (which is very hard).

Crystalina replied: How did he even know that you had a mental illness? huh.gif Your medical history is none of his business.

luvmykids replied: In re-reading this: it sounds like maybe he was just concerned that you might not be able to afford it if something happened, not that it was because of your disability hug.gif I'm sorry it didn't work out though hug.gif hug.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied:
Right now I'm not in subsidized housing and I have not signed a lease. I'm moving because of problems with the neighbours and landlord and I would like a bigger apartment so that the kids don't feel so cramped. It's a very small apartment.

gr33n3y3z replied:
Oh ok I remember you saying those problems before with the pot smell and noise.
Good Luck I'm sure you will find something that will work for you and the kids

Calimama replied: I'm sorry you didn't get it. hug.gif hug.gif
