I am sorry if I offended anyone - siggy
mommymonster wrote: I really like this place and think the people here are wonderful and caring. I sure would not sleep well tonight knowing that I may have offended anyone from this site.
All that sig guy does is display to the user what information is being recorded by this message board. It is unique to each user. For example. If user A and User B are looking at the exact same page at the exact same time, each user sees the information pertaining to them only. In further detail if person A is in oshkosh,TX using bungy.net as an isp, Then when person A looks at that post and only sees your ip is whatever, you are in oshkosh, etc, etc. Person B soesn't see any of the info from person A. Only INfo pertaining to them. So in other words. It is a safety feature for the private minded. It again only let's each user know what info this website records from them. www.danasoft.com will tell you all about it.
It was just meant to be cute, it is gone and I will never use it again.
1lilpeanut2love replied: U didn't offend me!! I just finally understood tonight to be exact what it was for!! I thought that was very neat!! Don't lose any sleep over that girl. You didn't do anything wrong!!
Nina J replied: It didn't offend me. I liked it, you know what they say, MommyMonster see's everything
mommymonster replied: Thank Yall! That makes me feel better, I love it hear!
luvmykids replied: Oh Jessica, I was not offended at all! I didn't even really look at it for awhile and when I did I thought "Wow, how does it know?" I probably shouldn't speak for everyone but IMHO I really doubt it bothered anyone!
You are so sweet to be concerned, but it really was cool, not offensive at all!
C&K*s Mommie replied:
no offense at all.
gr33n3y3z replied: Sorry it botherd me
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Oh hun....it's not a big deal. No reason to lose sleep over it, okay?
mckayleesmom replied: Well, you didn't offend me...I don't even know what your talking about
luvbug00 replied: Ditto to Brianne. I'm clueless..
coasterqueen replied: Didn't offend me. I've seen them on other boards before too.
MyLuvBugs replied: ITA! I must have missed it.
3xsthefun replied: I'm no offended either. I didn't even see what you are talking about.
ions_momma replied: Im not offened either. I just thought it was kind of cool actually
redchief replied: Actually I was offended, and here's why. The signature was a violation of my privacy in that it collected information about me without my choosing to visit the Danasoft website. Danasoft records that personal information it displays to each viewer. The siggy acts as a portal to the Danasoft website, as eluded to in their privacy statement (though not very clearly in my opinion). I understand websites' desires to log visits to their sites so that they can tailor their services based upon demographics, surfing habits and such. The reason the siggy offends me is that I don't choose to give that information to Danasoft. I choose to give that information to the Parenting Club forum because I WANT to visit here. Understand?
You may note that I do not use a portaled signature. Even though others don't display my IP information, Danasoft isn't the only signature portal provider that practices their collection policies. I put up with it because I like the Parenting Club, but I don't like it.
MamaJAM replied: I wasn't offended...though those things annoy me. I'm glad you removed it -- but I really didn't care when you had it there.
Bee_Kay replied: I was kind of shocked when I saw it, but I wasn't offended.
fashionmumofboys replied: I missed the whole thing, so I'm clueless to what it was.
Bellyboo replied: Could you give an example of a portaled signature? I haven't done mine yet and I'm just curious what one is.
I'm sorry, I'm new here and I'm just going to jump right in.
I think I know what your talking about because I've seen them on other sites. They never really bother me.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I hope you don't think I was saying I was offended! It just surprised me-Please don't feel bad
I wondered about that....I figured that everyone would only see their own info. Once again I am sorry if I made you feel bad
jcc64 replied: Ok, someone, please, clue me in as to what this offending siggy thing is?
Jamison'smama replied: I was one of those siggys that change for each person---saying something like You are 8.12343 your ISP is America Online you are running Windows XP
Something like that--have you seen them?
Bee_Kay replied: It's just freaky the first time you see it LOL!
punkeemunkee'smom replied:
Yep that was it...I made a post yesterday that it surprised me. I think it may have been taken wrong.
My3LilMonkeys replied: I personally was not bothered at all by it, but I didn't think about it really. The points Ed made are very valid - I don't really want some other website that I didn't even visit recording my information, KWIM?
redchief replied: Okay... I don't want to get into a big argument here, because for the most part the information that other web sites can gather is extremely limited. From your IP address they can't get any information other than your basic location, unless the website employs back tracing software in order to find open ports on your computer... Basically as long as your doors are locked, you're safe (use your firewalls).
Here's a rudimentary explanation:
When I load a message thread (this one is http://forums.parentingclub.com/index.php?...02&f=3&t=39080), I also load all of the code that is in that thread. Any tickers or other such cute things that are hosted by another website are loaded too. For instance, a ticker above is located at http://www.tickercentral.com/view/5jyl/8.png . My browser goes to http://www.tickercentral.com to load that ticker. As soon as my browser does that it identifies itself to http://www.tickercentral.com as an IP address. My visit information can be, and almost always is, logged by that server in order for that website to "serve its customers better" (standard language in most privacy statements).
I hope that explanation is clear.
Jamison'smama replied: wow, I never really thought of that--thanks Ed!
~~*Missi*~~ replied: i am sure if i knew what in the world you were talking about i wouldn't be offended. I figure coming on the internet is a risk. Without a good firewall and antivirus protection you at high risk of information getting away. I also think with good ones that still some gets thru. Ever googled yourself, its just a fact of life in the internet world! I know my isp and know what i am running so if someone else really cares go nuts lol!
Not offended since i only can see the previous post and it just doesn't seem like it was something that coming on here doesn't do anyways.
mommymonster replied: Thank you Missi! And thanks to all!
redchief replied: Yep... Actually everyone should do that at least a few times a year. You're right, there is a lot of personal information readily available that I think people would find very disturbing.
I don't exist outside of my fire service existence, wherein I must exist.
mommymonster replied: Again I appoligize, "red chief", you seem to have been very upset with it and it has been removed, I will not have any more siggy's like the such ever again, it was meant to be cute, not offensive, please, forgive me. I understand the importance of privacy and that is one Major reasons why I love this board. I have read many of your post and think you are a wonderful person in your replys and I am very glad that this board is actually watched so closely. Jess
redchief replied: Oh, Jessica, please don't misunderstand me!!! I was not, nor am I in any way upset about your old siggy, or any other! In fact, they're cute and add personality to the forum.
What irks me is that the websites that host those things use the traffic generated by me to make money. Surely I have no problem with a website that legitimately generates revenue traffic and makes money on it. It's like when you pay someone to clean your bathroom and they only wipe the mirror. For instance, the parenting club website hosts a banner ad site. I see those banners and therefore the advertising traffic parenting club generates is fair to the advertisers. Even better is when one of those ads catches our attention and we visit the advertised site.
It's obvious that you never intended to disturb anyone with your siggy and I'm certain that no one here has that in mind. Everyone here has gathered here for the central purpose of sharing family life experience, and that makes this a special place... for all of us who like it here.
I think as you spend time here you'll come to understand me better. Maybe this will help... I tend to be a preachy pain in the butt, I'm long winded (lettered?), and I'm OLD. I think if you look at my post history you'll also see that I'm rarely upset with any of the members here. I really enjoy everyone here and you can be most assured that I will not be upset with anything anyone has to say... Unless you make fun of my gray hair.
mommymonster replied: Thank you! I actually have a few grey myself ( and I am only 27! ), so I promise, no "grey" jokes!
ilovemybaby replied: Yep it's so true. I contributed lyrics to a song once and they put "thanks to (my email addy) for contributing these lyrics". I couldn't figure out why all of a sudden I was getting a whole lot of spam mail. Also I posted on a message board and it showed my email address even though I did not add it.
It really irks me that these websites do not even care that they are just publishing peoples email addresses for the whole world to see KWIM? If I did not give it to them, I don't want them to put it there". GRRR
mom21kid2dogs replied: It always made me laugh! I thought it was a great personal reminder that no matter who you are or what you do~someone is ALWAYS watching you!!
luvmykids replied: I hope I don't sound contrary or too stupid, but isn't this what allows the mods to kick someone out when necessary and prevent them from simply reregistering using different info?
Bee_Kay replied: Monica-
I think (and I may be wrong), but from how I understood it.... the infomation collected from users here (with that siggy thing), was somehow transfered to another website.... not PC. I think
luvmykids replied: Oh, gotcha. Thanks!
gr33n3y3z replied: The mods can only deleate posts and edit them we have no clue what ppl. use or their isp's
Only TLCDad or DeeDee can ban isp's
gr33n3y3z replied: Yep and you cant find me any where I tried every search and still nothing
luvmykids replied: I guess that was my question, I know we the general public on the forum have access to anyone elses info, but is this kind of "tracking" like danasoft a tool they use in knowing which ISP to ban? I guess what I was trying to say is, although it may be a nuisance does it also help protect?
ilovemybaby replied: Yeah it does. The moderators can ban people because they know their IP addresses. But no one else can.
jcc64 replied:
No one here, and I mean no one, has pissed Ed off as much as I have, and yet, he is one of my absolute favorite members whose opinions, advice, and comments I respect and eagerly seek out each time he posts. And he never stays mad for long!
luvmykids replied: TY, thats what I wanted to know. I'm not technologically apt enough to ask it correctly, thanks for getting my drift!
gr33n3y3z replied: The moderators can ban people because they know their IP addresses. But no one else can
No thats not true Only the Admin. can ban ppl.
luvmykids replied: That was really my point, that whoever it was could only do it because of these types of software. I said mods originally but the point was that although none of us see others IP addresses, it's a necessity for someone to be able to when it is called for to ban someone.
gr33n3y3z replied: yes exactly someone has to be able to see it bc thats how they can control boards Now for this type chat board only Rod and Dee Dee has access to that info. But its a good thing bc they wont abuse the info that our computers give off. Now are all ppl. like that I would have to say no.
Now if we were on lets say IRC chat rooms I could get all your info as well you can get mine more or less its fend for ourselves unless you have programs to hid your info.
redchief replied: Jeanne, I must say that I can never, ever remember being angry with you. I recall several times I agreed to disagree, but angry? No way! I find you to be way too special and I firmly believe you don't have a mean bone in your body. No way I could be angry with you. Lively debate never makes me angry... Sometimes debate even makes me rethink my position on an issue. You're awesome.
redchief replied: FORUM PYRAMID!!!!!
