I lost a good friend this weekend. - Family Pet.....

MomToJade&Jordan wrote: My Mom called me on Monday and told me that they had to put the dog to sleep. Fraiser was a basset hound and a really good friend. He was climbing up some steps and his legs just gave out on him. The vet said that he ruptured some disks in his back. There is a surgery to fix the problem, but it wasn't a 100% thing. They took him home with some pain killers, but he was basically paralized. My Mom said that the spark in his eyes had just gone out. So on Sunday they took him back and had him put to sleep. I am just so sad right now. I really loved that dog and I can't help but cry over his loss. I got to see him when I went home and I just thought that he would be there when I was able to get back again. He would have been 9 this year. Other then that he was perfectly healthy and probably would have lived a lot longer. It just goes to show how much our pets mean to us.

losing pets is harder than a lot of people think.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I am sooo sorry for your loss. I never knew what pets meant until I lost one a few years ago to cancer. I never had pets as a kid (sorry I dont count the fish we had). So when my DH and I were abke to have pets in our appartment we got his cat from his mom, she was a great cat. I loved her, then she got so sick and eventaully dies at the vets bedside, he did an odtopsie and found she had cancer, when I found out I cried. I never thougt I would cry over a pet but I was wrong.

juliajaj replied: I'm so sorry about your good friend. To me, it's a tremendous loss when a pet passes away. They always give unconditional love. It's natural for you to go thru the grieving process with your dog. Keep in mind all the good memories you had. About a month ago, I read an article about the loss of a pet. The article was written by an 11-year old girl about the loss of her dog. Here's the last paragraph (it's written from the perspective of the dog that passed away):

"May 22, 2003 was the last time my family saw me, but it wasn't the last time I saw them, because right now I'm looking over them and waiting for winter to come. And every time the thunder rumbles, it's me barking, and every time the sun shines, it's me watching over you with the twinkle in my eye. Never forget me because I'll always remember you and the way you loved me."

mummy2girls replied: (((HUGS))))...im so sorry

DansMom replied: It is very sad to lose a family pet, and especially hard when you have to make a decision to put a cat or dog to sleep who has been a companion and friend for many years. That must have been so hard for your parents. Hugs to you and to them. grouphug.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Awww! It is terrible losing a pet. Pets are so special. I know how you feel. My mom just had to put our Cocker Spaniel to sleep. They got her when I was 10. They had her for 15 years. It is so sad. I'm sorry for your loss. grouphug.gif grouphug.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Carrie-Ann, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how much losing a cherished family pet hurts. Just try to remember all of the great times you had with the dog and know that your parents did what they thought was right.
Hugs. It does get easier over time but it will still be hard to come home and not have your good buddy there to greet you. bawling.gif

MomofTay&Sam replied: sad.gif I am so sorry for your loss. I will be sending up many prayers for you and your whole family.

chloe&tysmommy replied: awe I'm so sorry for the loss of your pet doggie. I am the biggest animal lover and I know how hard it is to lose a pet.

I think losing a pet is just as hard as losing a family member. They really do become part of the family and always give unconditional love....I'm so sorry again for your loss grouphug.gif grouphug.gif grouphug.gif

Oh and I love the little poem juliajaj shared, its very touching bawling.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: grouphug.gif I know how you feel! My mom had to put our beloved dog down just a few months ago! He was 16 years old and brought my family so much joy! I'm so sorry for your loss! grouphug.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Thank you all so much. I really love you guys. I am going to have to send that poem to my Mom. It's going to make her cry as much as I am right now, but I think she needs to see it. I am actually doing much better that I am in here in Hawaii and not in Florida. I think if I had gone through what my parents did last weekend I would be a lot worse. When you love a pet you know that the day will come that you have to say goodbye. I just didn't think it would be this soon. sad.gif

paradisemommy replied: sending over my grouphug.gif grouphug.gif grouphug.gif grouphug.gif i've btdt and it never gets any easier to deal with the death of a beloved pet because in my eyes they become almost human and help you through so much and give you such unconditional love. hang in there sweetie and just remember all the good times you were able to share with him and how happy you made him smile.gif

jen replied: grouphug.gif I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know how hard it is. We are involved animal rescue and a lot of times we lose one, it doesn't take long to get attached, it is never easy. When you have an animal become a part of your life it is so much harder, it is hard to deal with people who don't value animals too or who treat them like posessions instead of family members.

We had a shetland sheepdog growing up and his name was Bandit and I never realized how much he was like a sibling to us and another child to my parents!! He swam with us off our boat, chased us on our horses, played baseball with us behind our house and even played hide and go seek (hiding and finding)! We had to take him to the vet when he was 14 (2 years ago) and have him put to sleep because he had a stroke which paralyzed him. I will never forget how my Dad who is the strongest of all of us broke down and cried while he held Bandit as they put him to sleep reminding him of all the good times we had with him telling him how he was the best dog and a good boy. Of course upon seeing my dad cry we all cried even hearing about it, even as I am typing.........It is just SO SAD. Today we all remember him and love the memories and may cry a little bit from time to time but it did get a lot easier and I hope this will give you some hope that is does get so much easier with time.

MomToJade&Jordan replied:
I have actually considered getting involved in animal rescue. I really love them and every pet I have ever had has become a part of our family. We always would go down to the Humane Society and adopt a cat. The dog that DH and I have now was a Humane Society dog. She's a sweetheart and just looks after Jade. She has gotten a lot of hugs this past few days. My Mom brought a cat home once because of all of the kittens he came up to her and said hi. Our animals always seem to pick us. I wasn't there when my parents had to say goodbye to Fraiser, but my Mom said that even my Dad was crying. Like your Dad he is the one who is the strongest. He was going to take Frasier home and bury him in the backyard, but it would have been the hardest thing he ever had to do. I am actually doing better now then I was two days ago. I have started to think of all the good times with my buddy and how he gave the best hugs. He had this loud howl that use to make us laugh and he never gave up playing with his duck. I am sure he's chasing that duck now wherever he is.

jen replied: Hi, That is great to hear that you are doing better smile.gif Animal Resuce is pretty easy to get involved in even if you were a foster family (sounds funny!) and just found loving homes! It is sooooooo rewarding. Most of our work is with horses, although I think we have a sign in our front yard that says "drop off all four legged unwanted, neglected or abused here" ha ha biggrin.gif We just take them in and give them food with everyone else. I am sure after my baby is born we will slow down a bit but it won't be long before we dive back in and Hey maybe we can just be The Swiss Family Robinson! ha ha! That would be GREAT!

Keep thinking of all the good memories and what a good life he had and gave to you! wub.gif
