I think I asked this already but just in case...

luvbug00 wrote: I was wondering since we have so many multicultural familys on here. what languages do you speak? your kids? ( or what do you want them to learn?) and your DH/SO?

I speak a VERY little bit of spanish, german and Hebrew ( hebrew is prayers only when going threw my religous wandering)

Mya speaks a little spanish and is going to learn itallian soon..I hope

Brad speaks english and english alone too lazy to learn anything else.

mckayleesmom replied: English....

When I was little I knew alot of spanish...I had a spanish babysitter.

CosmetologyMommy replied: DH is Mexican and speaks fluent spanish. I know sign language fluently and Aidan will be taught only english and maybe sign language because they teach it at his daycare.

PrairieMom replied: Both DH and I are full blooded American. Our familes have been here for so long and our blood lines are so mixed up that we really can't claim to be anything else!
We speak only english, but I took 2 years of spanish in HS, and Kind-a know sign language. Does that count? laugh.gif

luvmykids replied: I can speak enough Spanish to get by, not fluent though, and I have little bits and pieces of Polish left from my great grandma. I really want to learn Italian.

The kids know the Spanish they've gleaned from Dora and how to count to 10 but hopefully they'll learn Spanish + something else.

BAC'sMom replied: A little bit of Czech....that's what my husband is.

kimberley replied: i speak a little spanish, french, tagalog and italian... well i actually understand far more than i am willing to speak blush.gif

everyone else speaks english. i would like to get the kids in spanish classes but when they are older. they learn french in school.

My3LilMonkeys replied: I speak enough Spanish to get by. And I can say dirty words in Italian and German - does that count? rolling_smile.gif

CAMSMOM1 replied: My Dad's side of the family, is Italian. So I can understand some of it, but can't speak it, but I would like to.

I took 2 years of Sign Language in College, and I was very fluent. I haven't practiced in awhile, so it's a little rusty. I really want to brush up on it, and start using it with Cameron.

NEWMOM05 replied: I took 2 years of Spanish but I don't know how to say very much. So we only speak English. Although I would like to learn sign language.

holley79 replied: Enough Spanish to get me by. Annika's aunt is from Spain and will probably be teaching her spanish. That way when she's really mad at me I won't know what she's saying. rolling_smile.gif

CantWait replied:
Me and the kids speak english. I would like them to learn something else, but that will have to be their choice. Robbie right now learns french through school since it is Canada's second official language. I did take french from grade 1 through to grade 9, but I wasn't good at it at all so I haven't bothered with any other languages, although Ron's parents would like me to learn spanish since they can't otherwise communicate with me very well. My thought is that they should learn english since they live in Canada and have been here long enough to do so.

Ron speaks spanish, but is slowly losing it since he doesn't have someone to speak it with regularly. He is to lazy to teach the kids.

gr33n3y3z replied: Me I speak English and only that
Ed and the kids know spanish bc Ed had it in school and our kids started to learn it in 1st grade.

MamaJAM replied: We're not exactly "multi-cultural" -- but we're Jewish. So we speak both English and Hebrew.
The girls actually speak conversational Hebrew a lot better than DH and I because they learn it in school (and DH and I are trying to learn Hebrew as adults.....it's definately not an easy language). The boys only know some Hebrew prayers and a few scattered words yet...but they'll learn a lot in school.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: All of us are fluently bilingual - English and French. I also know quite a bit of spanish... enough to get by - and definitely enough to chat with my cleaning lady. rolling_smile.gif

DH is slowly picking up words, since I am trying to teach the kids a little spanish... plus they watch Dora.

My parents live in Germany (where I was born) for a few years - and so learned a bit of german... so they'd bought me a whole crapload of work books - on my spare time, I learned a bit of german. Most of it is lost now, I could probably get by, but just barely.

I also know dirty words and a few other sentences in Arabic. tongue.gif

ETA - I also know the ASL alphabet, and lots of words - I taught my kids a few basics when they were babies... apparently early 2-way communication such as sign language helps develop communication skill and helps to make it easier to learn a new language. Naomie is 4 months old and gets as excited if I make the sign for milk than if I lift my shirt. rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: DH is Dutch, although he was born in Boston. His parents were born in Holland and still speak fluent Dutch, but not around us. I would like Wil to be introduced to it though. DH can understand more than he can speak...he says it was his first language, but he doesn't remember much. My FIL just offered a family trip to Holland when the boys are older so that he can show us where he grew up!!! YEAH!

C&K*s Mommie replied: We speak English, but since Christian was 6wks old (started daycare) I taught her numbers 1-20 in Spanish. She knows a few other common words, but I am working with them both to teach them a few more that I know (which is not much) So we will be learning together. smile.gif

jcc64 replied: Dh speaks fluent Korean- it's his native tongue though he has no accent b/c he came here when he was only 8. By listening to him converse with his parents, I understand a few words and phrases, but not much. I took 6 yrs of Spanish in school, retained a surprising amount of it, but would hardly consider myself proficient.

Cece00 replied: We only speak english. DH & I both took spanish, but cant speak it. I can understand an OK amount. I can also understand but can not speak a word of cajun french, b/c my mom is fluent & so are all her brothers & sisters. She actually didnt learn to speak english until she was 5.
