IUD - freaking out a little
pinka_star wrote: About 7 months ago I got an IUD put in, since DH and I aren't in a position to have another baby right now. Well 2 days ago I started spotting a little. My Doctor said it was normal to spot up to 5 months after having the IUD. But I stopped bleeding/spotting about 3 months ago. So I'm a little freaked out why I've been spotting recently. Today it's gotten worse, it's not just a little spotting anymore. So I'm not sure what's going on, should I go to the Doc. about this or am I just being paranoid?
megsmommie replied: I have never had an IUD nor do I know much about them. But, I would call the doctors nurse and see if she oculd offer any answers. She might even be able to tell you if you should see the doctor or not. Good luck hun!
Boys r us replied: I'm sorry, I don't know anything about IUD's..but I just thought I'd tell you that I don't think you're being paranoid! you know your body better than anyone else and I think if you think there is a need for concern, then it's probably valid and you should at least call your doctor to have it checked out!

maestra replied: Which iud do you have? I just had my mirena removed on Monday so we can ttc.
pinka_star replied: I have a Mirena too.
pinka_star replied: Thank you I appreciate that!!!!
maestra replied: Do you get af with it, because I had spotting about ever 60 days from when Jaci was about 4 months old. It was just my normal cycle- but I would only actually see any blood every other. (sorry if TMI)
pinka_star replied: No, since about 3 months ago I haven't had a period at all. My Doc. said that most women don't get a period at all, and some women do. But it just seems weird to me that I didn't have anything for 3 months, now this.
maestra replied: I would check the strings to make sure it is still in position. Mirena doesn't completely stop the bleeding for many women, but it does make it much much lighter. You still have your cycle with mirena, the hormone just causes you uterus to produce less lining.
If you are really worried, I would put in a call to the dr, and just tell them what is going on. But from what I understand, spotting at anytime is considered normal with Mirena.
pinka_star replied: Alright, thank you so much for your help. I feel better about it. If by next week I'm still spotting I'll call the Doc. but I won't worry too much. Thank you again!!!
maestra replied: This is what the mirena pamphlet says about side effects: Missed menstrual periods. About 2 out of 10 of women stop having periods after 1 year of Mirena® use. The periods come back when Mirena® is removed. If you do not have a period for 6 weeks during Mirena® use, contact your health care provider.
They say to call your dr if you have severe or prolonged bleeding.
I think that if you go beyond what was normal for your period, you should call. ( I mean the number of days that your period would have lasted before) HTH!
Lily replied: I've had an IUD for about 4 years now. Didn't need any birth control when Adam was in Korea or it would be 5 years. I wasn't told my periods would stop. And they didn't. I've had a period every month since having it put in. With that said, an IUD does not prevent fertilization of an egg, just stops the egg from implanting in the uterine wall. I have had many months when I knew I was fertilized but with no money and no insurance there's just nothing I can do about it. When I'm having one of those months I sometimes spot and bleed (sometimes heavily) for a couple days and then it goes away and later my normal period comes. So that might be why you're spotting now. I don't mean to alarm you or anything. I just know that I wasn't told this would happen and when I found out on my own I was upset. It's better to know EXACTLY what to expect. And definitely check the IUD to make sure it's still in place. AND if you think something's not right go ahead and see the doctor just to make sure. For your own peace of mind if nothing else. Good luck!
pinka_star replied: Thank you everyone!! If it gets worse I'll make an appointment with the Doc. in the mean time I'll try not to worry about it too much. I'm sure it's nothing.
