If you could go/go back to school....
coasterqueen wrote: what would you go back for?
I've always wanted to "be" a lot of things in my day. In high school I had my mind set on going to college to be a paralegal, but was told that I could not have a family and do something so consuming so I steered away from it. I always had a passion for wanting to be a lawyer. After having kids I have wanted to be a Lactation Consultant, Neo-Natal nurse or a L/D nurse.
Recently a friend of mine said I should go back to school. That I would be a good lawyer and I should go for it now. It got me thinking and for a brief moment I actually thought about it. Then I thought about how consuming getting a degree in law would be, especially now working full time and a family at home.
So what would you go back for if you could?
Crystalina replied: I am going back to be a Medical Transcriptionist when Evan starts pre-school.
luvbug00 replied: i'd love to be a doula or go back to the jewelry industry. GIA school or midwifry or somthing school
luvmykids replied: I've though of L/D nursing but realistically I'm not sure I'd like ALL aspects of the job. It would be pretty easy for me to become a CPA but I hate accounting. So basically, I don't know There are a lot of things that interest me but nothing so far that really inspires me enough to put the time in to do it.
DansMom replied: Yeah, L/D nursing for a profession if I could handle the science courses, and if not, simply Linguistics as a more appropriate major than the one I had. I majored in English, but I'm more interested in the mechanics of language and language groups. I figured out in my Senior year that linguistics was my true interest---too late, unless I go for a Masters or something.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Whoa, someone gave you rotten advice. The paralegals in Aaron's firm are well paid and work normal hours. Rarely do I call after 5pm and get one to answer the phone. Personally, I found a career that I love. I love lab work, it's always a challenge and rarely am I ever bored. That being said, if I did ever go back to school, I'd do nursing. They get paid a phenomenal amount more than I do for the same amount of schooling, sometimes less.
amymom replied: I would be a teacher. Love it!
C&K*s Mommie replied: I am currently attending school to become a medical assistant (here in my town we are the same as LPN's but with lower pay ). But I plan to continue with schooling to become an RN. My goal is to become what was previously mentioned.... an L&D nurse.
HuskerMom replied: Sometime in the next couple years I plan on going back to get my bachelor's. I'm not sure what area though. I'm thinking maybe accounting (even though I hate math). But I loved my accounting and bookkeeping classes in college.
Cece00 replied: If time and money while I was in school were not an issue, I'd go back to be atty, specifically dealing in family law.
DillsMommy replied: I'd like to go to hair/beauty school or something in nursing.
amynicole21 replied: This is me exactly. I would love to be a LD nurse, but would not like to do all of the other nursing stuff like treating sores or wiping butts I really don't have anything that inspires me right now.
TANNER'S MOM replied: I would love to have a Poultry Science degree. It's big in this area with Tyson foods being every where. I would like to learn about breeding of chicken. Disease control, testing. I would like to learn how to cross breed for the pretty chickens. I had the old white leghorns, chicken house chickens. I would love to do anything to do with animals. A vet perhaps. I thought about being a vet assistant. But sometimes that would hard too.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Something with math - I'd really love to do statistical analysis or something similar.
jcc64 replied: Well, funny you should ask. I got laid off two weeks ago, which wasn't unexpected considering my company went bankrupt and the owner is being indicted by the SEC for fraud, but it sucks nonetheless. It's gotten to the point where my degree is no longer helpful to me- too many textile jobs have migrated overseas. Rather than trying to scrape together a living, I am going back to school for a masters in either social work or teaching. Teaching's more lucrative, but after spending my entire working life with a substantial amount of autonomy and freedom, I don't think I could handle the rigid structure of a classroom. I'm leaning toward social work. Or maybe a guidance counselor like my dad?
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Registered dietician or nutritionist, but I really hate school and that would be too much schooling for me, I think. I wouldn't mind being a personal trainer, either.
I like anything to do with the human body and improving its appearance and longevity/health. Massage therapist or Aesthetician is something I've been thinking about lately. I think I would thoroughly enjoy that and I could set my own hours while the kids are in school.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Jeanne, I'm sorry to hear that, but it sounds like it's for the best. FWIW, I think you would make an awesome social worker.
mummy2girls replied: i am going to go back to school when Marcus is done his schooling. ( thats if i dont have a new born at this time) LOL... i want to get my rehabilitation practitioner... so i cam work with the severly disabled kids...
A&A'smommy replied: Well lets see when I was 16 and getting ready to graduate the next year I was really either going to school for dance and hoping to get into a good company or going into the air force and getting a degree through them... BUT when I got pregnant everything got put on hold for a while.. and acutally about two or three months ago I was looking into going to school in atlanta for photography which would have meant me moving there and possibly alyssa but after many fights and then my dance school coming into play I just decided not to do it.. I'm still going to pursue photography I plan on using my studio for that also and my students
lovemy2 replied: Yes, I agree you got really bad advice - and a career as a paralegal is a good stepping stone to being a lawyer because you learn all the procedural things attorneys know nothing about - I have been a paralegal for over 10 years and my pay continues to increase and it becomes more and more family friendly - I concentrate in Estates and Trusts and have been in the last five years able to work from home as well as in an office - I currently work in a CPA firm concentrating on the tax and accounting side of Estates and Trusts and made the move to further my career....I am hoping someday they bring a law school to Rochester cause I would go in a heartbeat - for now the closest one is one and half hours away and is not doable......so in the meantime I continue to learn more and more and have also recently broke into some bookeeping so the move was a good one as it opened more doors for me - I hope to eventually go on my own and be self-employed as a paralegal/bookeeper......
BTW - I have a bachlor's degree in Social Work and also a Paralegal Certification......
coasterqueen replied: Jeanne, I am so sorry to hear about your job. I know it's been iffy for sometime, but still I'm sorry this happened. Good luck, I think you'd be a great social worker.
For everyone else - thank you for responding. It's neat to hear all the different things people want to do with their lives. As someone who believes you spend your entire life learning, I do believe I will venture into one of my 'passions' someday. I love politics, and that's where I'm at now. Being a paralegal or lawyer could help me stay in politics more - be a lobbyist which would be a ton of fun (when my girls are much much older). So we'll just see what the future brings.
Good luck to all of you and your endeavor into what you wish to do someday.
stella6979 replied: Probably Social Work. I know the pay isn't all that great, but I've got a huge soft spot for kids who are abused and I would love to find them all great homes. Of course, that's not very realistic, but I would like to at least try and help.
Kaitlin'smom replied: I have often thought about this as well, I have often thought about paralegal, photograpgy, research, lab work, something with math....see I have so many things I am interested in I can never make up my mind.
lisar replied: I always wanted to be a lawyer. Everyone said I would be good at it cause I am good when I argue. I dont wanna do that anymore. I think I would like to be a teacher. I dont know why but I would. I have actually serious thought about it. But I am so good in an office being an office manager I have also thought about getting my business degree.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Something in the medical field or something having to do with animals, like a vet assistant.
jcc64 replied: Thanks for your warm wishes, guys. It means ALOT to me.
DansMom replied: Sorry about the layoff, Jeanne! I know you saw it coming, but it still stinks. I know a lot of social workers! My sister got her masters here at the UofMich, and so did my good friend, and the woman whose kids I used to babysit while I was in college. There are so many niches once you get accredited. Some are more lucrative (medical social workers are well paid around here). I can totally imagine you either teaching or counseling.
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Probably a degree in business. I have my BA in studio art, but I never use it. I wouldn't mind opening up my own event planning business someday or maybe just a cute retail shop. I don't need a degree to do it, but I really want to learn about managing finances and investments.
Karen, I think you should go for it! You would make a great lawyer!
coasterqueen replied: Thanks Rae.
You'd definitely be great at meeting planning. You know if there was a way to make a great meeting planning business around here I'd so go for it. Even though I say often that I hate meeting planning, I truly love it. You just couldn't make it big around here unless you go to Chicago.
Mommy2Isabella replied: I would LOVE to go back to school for a teaching degree or to be an ER nurse
Calimama replied: I'm in school but I would also like to take real estate course. Hopefully I'll be able to be an intern with a designer by the time I'm 21.
TheOaf66 replied: I would go back for criminology of some sort either investigating or CSI
boyohboyohboy replied: I am looking for just such a career now, and am leaning towards phlembotomy with my nursing degree, and looking just for some lab work on weekends.. I am just not sure what it might all entail...
flirtycuddle replied: I actually just started back to school this month and am going for my bacholores in psychology and then eventually into social working. I have the 2 little ones at home and work full time and i wouldn't stop school for anything.
