If you live on the West Coast, read this
CAMSMOM1 wrote: Last night my DH and I watched this show called, "Tsunami, are we next" on the Discovery channel. It was first showing clips on the Tsunami in Asia last year. It was talking about the fault lines and how the fault lines by the West Coast are exact replicas of the one in the Indian Ocean. They were saying it's not a matter if it'll ever happen to us, but when. When they were studying our fault lines, and the condition it was in, they said all it takes is one major Earthquake in California to set off a Tsunami. In the past, it happens almost ever 200 years. The last one in Cali was in the 1700's, and we're over due. It went into great detail about the evidence they have found, and showed a very real graphics on what it would look like or be in California, and along the West Coast. Because our fault lines are very close to land, it would only take 15 min. to reach the shore. That's no time to evacuate 10 million people. I don't want to give to much away in case you are goign to watch it tonight. I highly suggest you do, it's on the Discovery channel again tonight. It said that when the Tsunami hits us, it'll be like 6 Katrina hurricanes. That's a lot of force. Just some info I thought I'd pass along. It was really interesting to watch.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Yeah I watched it too... it was very interesting.
I cracked a joke last night to dh that those guys wives must be in heaven.... they get that excited over a crack in the ocean floor - just imagine!!
CAMSMOM1 replied: Did you think the graphics on there were awesome! It looked so real. Kinda got me freaking out since I live in California, but it's good info. to know...I'm sure the people in Indonsia would've benefited if this program was shown before their Tsunami. I couldn't believe those people in Asia, when they saw the tide disappearing and they stayed on the shore to see "the big waves!" I would've ran like heck!
Ann
Hillbilly Housewife replied: well, they prolly didn't know "that" was gonna happen.
I personally don't like big bodies of water... so I would NEVER live on a Coast. Especially not California, San Fran etc... ever since I was little, my grandparents had been saying they're never going back. They visited the GGBridge and were glad to have gone when they did (20 yrs ago) cuz my grandma is too chicken to go now, with the threat thatr the whole crest will just snap off and plunge.....
CAMSMOM1 replied:
Hahahaha...that makes me feel good, since I live in California! So if I'm ever MIA, you know what happened to me...I'm on the bottom of teh ocean! I've always lived here, my families here...so is DH's, so we're probably stuck here! We don't live on the coast, but both of my Grandparents do. And my Mom and Step Dad are moving to the coast of Oregon. So I made them watch the show last night, and I asked them "So, you still want to move to Oregon!" lol ! It's been awhile since we've had a bad earthquake, I'm sure we can't be to lucky for long! I think the program is on now for you guys in the East Coast. I think I'm going to watch it again tonight, I'm lame, but it was soooo good!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I saw a preview for it, but it freaks me out too much to watch. I grew up on the coast in CA and still have all my family there. I'm in CO now, but the thought sends chills down my spine!
A&A'smommy replied: I couldn't watch it either it would SERIOUSLY freak me out and I live in Alabama I just can't stand to see tragedy or the prediction of in America because it doesn't happen that often to us
Emeraldsmom replied: I live in California, and I heard about it but didnt want to watch it because I am scared.
CAMSMOM1 replied: I understand you guys are scared to watch it. I know it's not something we don't like to think about, but it is a reality. This show helped me learn the signs that can help save my life, and my families. I rather know what to do, and how to survive this in case it happens. We see everyday all of the earthquakes, hurricanes, and all of the natural disasters on the news. By the way that nature has been, and what they have found on the coast, this is something we should be concerned about. After watching the program, yes there is some fear. But it was the same amount of fear I had before I even watched the show. But I did learn valuable information, and I don't want to live in California and not be prepared. Hopefully it doesn't happen, but if it does, we're getting ready for it. Ann
PrairieMom replied: you guys know the #1 way to survive a tsunami? move to SOuth Dakota! We have it pretty good for a place that is winter 6 months out of the year. No earthquakes, volcanos, hurricanes, or tsunamis! The worst thing we have here is tornados, and in my whole enitre life of living here, (25 years) I have never actually seen one! We also have a low crime rate since there is nothing here but soybeans and corn!
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Or try Idaho. Same amount of winter, but potatos, not corn/soybeans. LOL.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Ha - sounds like Canada.... except we don't relaly get tornadoes here either. Very few, anyways.
we have all four seasons too: Almost Winter, Winter, still winter, and construction.
Apparently, we have an even lower crime rate, since we're not allowed to carry guns.... anyways that's what Bowling for Columine says...
CAMSMOM1 replied:
That was hilarious! (Prairemom) Do you have a spare bedroom, cause we're packing right now! See you in a few hours!
I think I'm crazy for living here, or maybe just stubborn!
I'm a good swimmer, I'll survive!
Ann
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
I don't think you're crazy...it's a gorgeous place to live and like 70 degrees year round! I would live back there in a heartbeat if I could afford it! My parents little track home that they bought in the 70's for about 70K goes for about a mill right now! Now that's crazy! If people in CA were so worried about tsnunamis, they would move and real estate would go down! I don't see that happening anytime soon!
Although I'm scared of tsunamis, you get your natural catastrophes just about anywhere. I've lived through my share of major earthquakes. You can't base your life around it IMO. But like you said, it is good to be prepared and informed.
huggybugboy replied: I live right on the coast in CA and we had a pretty serious tsunami warning up here not 6 months ago after an earthquake. I guess it was pretty major because it was all over country on the news. There also was a tsunami that hit Crescent City in the 1900s and went all the way up to Alaska (I dont remember the exact year). So it does happen. But I love it here and can't live my life in fear, as much as I hate earthquakes. And anyway, I seem to be out of town everytime a major one hits .
MomToJade&Jordan replied:
That sounds like Florida only it's summer, almost summer, still summer, and construction.
I lived in Hawaii for 4 years and they were always saying how we were due for one. I do remember that Tsunami warning about 6 months ago. It was all over the news out there.
Oh and for those people just sitting there watching the water recede. I would have been out of there. I have lived in Florida for most of my life and learned early on about hurricanes and storm surge.
