If you were going to give your child a quilt - when they are older
coasterqueen wrote: what size of a quilt would you give them? A baby size blanket quilt? A king? A queen? A full size? A twin size?
I am going to have a quilt made when the girls are older from some of their clothing over the years as they get older. Make sense? Unfortunately I've given away most of Kylie/Megan's 0 to 12 month size clothing so I can't use them but I can start from 12 months on up. I've been going through clothing to see what I'm going to give to a friend who's pg and decided I want to save some that would be pretty for a quilt.
So it will be something they get when they are 18 or older, probably when they get married or have their first baby. So I'm just trying to determine what size quilt I'd want to have made. I know a TAD bit early to be thinking of that, but it will help me determine how many outfits I really want to save per size per year to do this. I'm going to have one done for both of my baby girls. I'm hoping my MIL will make them since she is absolutely fabulous at sewing.
Anyways, what size would you want for your child when they are older?
Bee_Kay replied: I made Ashley a quilt a couple months ago.
Although she has a full-size bed, I made the quilt a twin-size because she uses it more for snuggling up on the couch, not as a bedspread.
A couple years ago, I crocheted Tyler an afghan and also made it twin-size.
Kaitlin'smom replied: I am not sure I have often thougth about this as well.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I'd probably make it either a twin size if you plan on giving it to them in their teen years, or crib sized if you plan on giving it to them for their children. Then I'd consider making more than one quilt, like one for each of their kids. Or at least saving the pieces of cloth to make the 2nd or 3rd quilts...
I'd feel kinda funny having a quilt made from my baby clothes on my wedding bed, kwim?
coasterqueen replied: Yeah, I agree. My thoughts were that they'd probably hang it up on a quilt stand some day? I think I'd probably give it to them when they have their babies (if they do decide to have babies). And your idea of saving the rest of the dress material to make one for each of their babies is EXCELLENT. Course I hope they don't have too many babies, I might not have enough to go around.

CantWait replied: That's a great idea for making it for their babies and making it a crib or twin size. Just make sure you don't use a lot of pink's and purples, and make it somewhat neutral just in case their babies are boys.
C&K*s Mommie replied: What a good idea!!
I would have a twin size made, to be hung over a quilt stand, as you said.
MyLuvBugs replied: Queen size. That way she could take it to college or have it in her own home later in life. Something to pass down, KWIM? I'm actually going to do this, but I'm going to wait until the girls are teenagers (15-16) so they can pick out colors that they really like.
Cece00 replied: I've made (along with my mother, I dont sew very well ) each of my children a quilt before they were born. They are basically the size (slightly larger) of a crib comforter.
Even my 4 yr old still loves his!! He was laying on the floor with his pillow & the blanket this morning.
We actually made two of them (identical) and one stays @ my mom's house & one is here so my kids have their blankets when they go overnight to her house once a wk.
When they get older & dont use them anymore, I plan on taking the one in better shape to put up for my kids to have as keepsakes when they are older.
My oldest one's is mainly blue, my middle son's is mostly green, my daughter's lavendar & the one I just got fabric for (for the unborn baby) is mainly red. They are all soooo adorable, made of cute fabrics, 100% cotton.
Halo42101 replied: My MIL made a full-size quilt for my DH with pieces of all the jeans he had grown up in. So, it's a jean quilt and is very thick and warm. It's very sentimental to both of us now.
Jamison'smama replied: I think a twin or full is nice. With typical baby clothes colors, it is probably not something they will decorate a room around--probably more for personal use so a smaller size is nice for them to use for themselves or with their kids. You could also do a wall hanging with their name quilted on it.
Another suggestion.... my SIL made her daughter a t-shirt quilt--she cut the fronts off of those beloved t-shirts (wiggles, camp, dora--any that meant something to her) and made a wonderful (and soft!) quilt. I don't remember what she backed it with but I loved the idea--I am saving those t's.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: Thats a great idea! I'd make it a full size, and give it to them when they go off to college or get their first apartment.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: A baby quilt made from their baby clothes for their kids is a CUTE idea too!!
AlexsPajamaMama replied: My step mom and I cut squares out of old jeans and pieced them together into a quilt. They came out really neat too!! Differant shades of denim and I think even corduroys too! We did a quilt for my bed and two throw pillows.
Ashlynn's Mommy replied: I would make it a baby size quilt. So it can be passed down from generation to generation, and maybe hang it in the nursery.
coasterqueen replied: Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions. They definitely help me decide what to do. I'm saving some of their dresses, shirts, anything that I absolutely LOVE on them or have a bit of meaning. Obviously that would be just about everything, but I promised Dh I wouldn't go too far like that, so I'm being picky about what i choose to keep for the project. If they are anything like me they won't want to use it at all, they'll want to just sit there and stare at it and reminisce (sp?). I know I'm sort of a dork.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I had a friend whose mother did this for her. It's such a GREAT idea. I have saved some of my favorites of the kids clothes to do this. I'm just not sure I will want to cut them.
To answer your question, my Nanie made me a quilt when I was younger (a year before she passed away ). It's a twin and to me, it's the perfect size.
mummy2girls replied: ive thought about this but what i would love to do is make a quilt with jennas pictures throughout her childhood... from birth up to 18. so have her graduation pics in it school, every day pics, birthdays etc etc etc and give it to her when she is getting married.
coasterqueen replied: That is a great idea too Shelly. I thought about that at one point, but I'm doing scrapbooks for each of them that they can take with them when they leave home . Don't like thinking about that .
luvmykids replied: I'd say twin or crib sized, with a crib of course they could use it for their kids but it might get even more use being twin sized, then their kids could use it for a lot longer.
