I'm SO mad right now...
MomToMany wrote: OK, DH's nieces (there are 3, plus his step-niece) are visiting from Arizona for a couple of months since their mom just got remarried. Well, I guess 3 days before the wedding, the youngest (she's 10) came down with a case of head lice. The mother decided NOT TO TELL ANYONE! I guess she didn't want the hassle of it right before the wedding! The girls have been staying at MIL's house. She called last night to tell me that they ALL have it! We took them swimming, and they have slept here a few times, too. GREAT! JUST WHAT I WANT TO DEAL WITH!!! UGH!!!!!!! They have used the boys' pillows when they were gone, but the boys were here this past weekend. So, THEY probably all have it, too!
I've never had to deal with this before, so I don't know what I am doing. DH says they get it quite frequently. Thanks for telling me that!! I told him last night that I don't want them here until it's completely gone, which will take 2 weeks about. UGH!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, it just makes me SOOOOOO mad that SIL did this to us.
Now my head won't stop itching...........
Boys r us replied: Oh NO,Mollie! That's incredibly RUDE of their mother! I hope yours don't end up with it!!! I heard that you're supposed to put their bedsheets and stuff in a trashbag and tie it up for two weeks to kill any possible eggs. I would do that EVEN if your kids don't show any signs of the lice! ughh my head is itching just talking about this!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: That was so rude of her not to tell anyone about that! I'm not sure what you are supposed to do, but I know you can get the shampoo at any pharmacy. I would talk to the pharmacist about it or go online and find some info. I had it once when I was a child and it wasn't pleasant. But we were able to get rid of it pretty quickly. I would definately wash the boys pillows in very hot water. Good Luck and I hope your boys don't get it.
jem0622 replied: Oh how awful! HUGS.
For the boys...I'd say shave their heads. Seriously. I think there is a product called RID that helps.
How dreadful. Has she even apologized?
HUGS
booey2 replied: That is just plain mean. My sister did something like this to us, only the first tie Matthew was about 9months old and he got it as well as I did. We got rid of it and I blasted my sister. Then after Thomas was born the his first summer we got it again, Matthew, Thomas and me. Boy did I ever get paranoid after that, now whenever my scalp gets itchy I start to worry. Doesn't help that I have a dry scalp, as do Matthew and Thomas now.
As suggested cut the boys hair as short as possible or shave their heads, the shampoo also helps, as does a mixture of mineral oil and vinegar left on the head under a wrap for a couple of hours. ( had to do this with Matthew the first time as he was so young). Good luck and know that you are not alone in this.
MomToMany replied: I guess Hannah has it. When she woke up, I checked her head, and sure enough it was there ! I called the boys' dad and told him to have the boys checked, and to shave their heads. I put a shower cap on Hannah til MIL brings the shampoo over this afternoon. I have about 10 loads of bedding to wash and dry.
I haven't talked to SIL, but I guess MIL called to tell her all the girls had it. I don't think she even apologized for it!
I bet DH and I have it now! I don't know how I'm going to get my hair done. I don't know who will do it. DH wants me to shave his head tonight, which I will do.
UGH!! WHAT A MESS!!
MommyToAshley replied: OH NO MOLLIE! OMG, I can't believe that she didn't tell anyone!!!
I am sorry Hannah has it, I hope you are able to get rid of it quickly. I remember reading in Parenting Mag that there is a lice shampoo that you can use safely while PG... but I don't remember the name of it. I would check the bottle too and make sure you can use Rid on kids under 3. If you have to do your hair, maybe you should call your OB first and ask what to use.
I am sorry you have to deal with this.
Boys r us replied: OMG!!!! Great big hugs to you honey b/c I know you're probably freaking right now! I cannot believe she did that! Just take some deep breaths and do what has to be done! Definitely call your OB before you use anything on yourself!
jem0622 replied: Hey Mollie I'd use the non-toxic home remedy that was shared above for you. Maybe let your hair and your daughters soak in it under shower caps. Do that for a few days.
Another option is for you and your daughter to go short too. Not shaved heads, but at least so that you can get to the scalp better and they have less area to breed in. KWIM? You could go to a beauty salon and find the longest attachment for a razor that they have. That is always an option for you. You'd just have a pixie 'do.
My hair is even shorter than that so I guess that is why I'm suggesting it. I have no time to do my hair!
HUGS. Unbelievable.
jem0622 replied: Sorry...rambling. I just had another thought. I wonder if I home perm kit would kill them? If you and the girls have long hair (not the baby, obviously) then I wonder if you could do home perms instead and the chemicals would kill them off? And then use the non-toxic stuff for the baby? Use lots of vaseline and cotton to keep everything out of everyone's eyes.
HUGS again.
coasterqueen replied: OMG Mollie! Is your SIL the same as mine or are do they know each other well??? I called my SIL Friday night to ask what her dd wanted for her birthday and she said "oh btw, Kirsten had lice last weekend on Father's day and she was hugging Kylie. I've spent all week cleaning our house, so you might want to check Kylie."
UHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, WHAT $#&*$#*&^$*(#. And she didn't call me or tell me sooner! I had my mom check Kylie and it appears she doesn't have anything at all thank goodness! But I was furious!
Why are people so darn rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????
amynicole21 replied: OMG, I would be FUMING I can't believe her. What a nightmare
5littleladies replied: That is sooo rude!!! How irresponsible can a person be?? I had lice when I was a little girl. It was no fun.
Products like Rid do work but don't forget that after you use it you have to go through all the hair with a fine tooth comb to make sure you get rid of the eggs. And you also have to bag up all of the kids stuffed animals in garbage bags and keep them sealed for a couple weeks. (just be careful to not throw them out with the trash-my dad did this to me on accident-very traumatic for a little girl ) And wash all your bedding. Fun stuff. I hope you can get this taken care of soon! Good luck!!
Kaitlin'smom replied: OH how rude of her! Sounds like something my sister would do......when the sitters daughter got it she warned me right away, thankfully Kailin had well really no hair at the time and she never got it. Make sure you throw away any and all brushes......that one of the easiest way for them to spread.
I hope this clears fast!
MomToMany replied: I don't think I'd have the heart to do that! I couldn't do it to myself; I just wacked off 10 inches not too long ago. Plus it took so long for Hannah to get ANY hair, I can't cut it off.
Thanks everyone for the support! I sure appreciate it!
maestra replied: This is an issue I deal with all the time. Yuck! Just remember that shaving heads only makes the lice easier to see, it won't get rid of them. Also, check out this site for help
http://www.headlice.org/
If anyone wants it, they will send you a free "critter card" with pictures to help you distinguish lice from other things that are normally in hair.
Zoe'sMommaCamie replied: OMG Mollie! That's awful! How do you just NOT tell the person who is watching your kids that the have lice??!?!!!?!? That's so rude and disrespectful! *ugh* I hope the boys dont have it. I wouldn't even care about keeping the sheets LOL I would get new ones
(((HUGS)))
kimberley replied: that is so awful! i would be furious if i were you! i hope you get it all cleared up quickly.
lsjulee replied: Oh how I hate this kind of inconsiderate people!!
MomToMany replied: I got Hannah's hair done last night, and I only found one bug. The boys' dad called and said that he didn't find anything in their hair either. And of course they got hair cuts. I cut DH's hair last night too. DH checked my hair and didn't find anything either. I got all the bedding washed yesterday, so today I have to vacuum everything really good.
I'll have to redo Hannah's hair in 10 days, and check it daily til then.
At least it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Hopefully this will be the end of it, I don't want to deal with this again!
amynicole21 replied: Whew! Sounds like you avoided the worst of it. Thank goodness!!
MomToMany replied: Thanks Amy! I'm so much more relaxed right now. MIL said she was also going to cut the girls' hair. She said since SIL put her in this mess, she'll do what it takes to remedy the situation. They all have long hair and only wash it maybe once a week. I think it would be for the best, too. MIL is still mad at their mom for not saying anything. I guess MIL really chewed her out! We get along good, though (thank goodness).
kimberley replied: just remembered something from when my sister got them... my mom had to wash all the stuffed animals in hot water because they can live on there. it is something most of us wouldn't think about but her ped reminded her.
Guest replied: Sorry must be a bit of an unfortunate additional stress, Having grown up in the UK I found the whole thought of lice to be doom and gloom so can understand your reaction, I would say that here in the philippines Lice is almost a fact of life and now I am rather blase about it ., no sooner do I clear them from porks little head than a cousin or auntie will put them right back in again, the shampoo does work pretty well and clears them fast, BUT
it actually is quite fun doing the old headlice search and squishing them--I am the official squisher-partly because I can't spot one for toffee whereas my wife is a seasoned expert she finds them passes them to me on my thumbnail and I squish!!!--we sit around like a family of chimps grooming each other--can be quite an enjoyable experience hearing them go pop!! -though shampoo is a better option lol hahaha even managed to get my first ever dose of them here as well hahaha--did not need to cut hair short btw a good searcher can find them however long the hair lol
porksdad replied: that was me btw--sorri forgot i was not logged in
amynicole21 replied: EEEEEEEeeeeewwwwww! Yuck!
jdkjd replied: Ditto!!
My2Beauties replied: Sorry I am late on this one but that was so rude of her. I'm glad you are battling those little suckers and sounds as if you're winning! I had it once when I was little, got it at school and I had hair down to my butt. I'll never forget (back then the shampoo I got was called Nix) and my dad took that little comb that came with it and went through my head for 3 hours pulling out every egg he could find. I had to do that for weeks, then mom just bought new sheets, didn't even want to take a chance with the old ones. I would suggest that if it is within budget, or wash them in the hottest water you can get! Sorry this happened, those little things are so gross! My head is itching now.
Jamison'smama replied: oh, big hugs! I was a counselor at a domestic violence shelter and lice would run though the house all the time---definately able to control though. They make a spray that you can spray the mattress and carpet with---then wash sheets and anything else in hot water and a hot dryer (place the stuffed animals in a pillow case and put them in a hot dryer as well). I think the spray is handy. Be careful, the little nits can hide well--they are so light colored and hard to see on light hair--the bugs are darker and easier to find. You know when they are nits when you cant just flick them off the hair---pretty gross.
Sounds like you are doing a great job--hang in there!!!
