I'm so angry, and upset!!!!!!!
Ashlynn's Mommy wrote: Sorry if this is long but I really need to vent!! I worked full time as a Shift Supervisor for 6 years. The health insurance was really great. It covered everything including dental with no out of pocket costs. Well I went on maternity leave in december 05 (I was 34 weeks pregnant). My baby was born 2 weeks after that (dec 19). After she was born my boyfriend, and I talked about me going back to work. We both decided that it would be in the baby's best interest if I stayed home with her. We didn't want to leave her with anyone, and daycare is too expensive. Here in NY it is like 7.50 and up an hour. Well because I quit my job, I lost my health insurance. The kids have insurance and so does my bf, but I don't. So today I went to apply for medicaid. They told me that I don't qualify because I live with my bf, and he makes too much money. WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We live pay check to pay check, and we are not married. I don't understand the system. How come they don't add up our monthly bills, and then deduct that cost from what we make. If they did that then they would see that we don't have that much money. We are not poor, and we are not rich, we are right in between. It's not like i'm a free loader. I'm raising my two daughter's. Ones in school and one I stay home with all day. I'm currently looking for a night job, so when my bf comes home from work he can stay with the kids while I go to work. I'm currently in college for nursing, my classes resume in july. I just need a little help from the state to get health insurance, until I get back on my feet, and they are making it impossible. Thanks for letting me vent.
A&A'smommy replied: I'm sorry hun I have been there and it is NOT by any means easy.. but it does get better especially once you get out of school!!
My3LilMonkeys replied: I'm sorry that you're having a difficult time. I know situations like this can be difficult, but once you get through school it will get easier.
The reason why that wouldn't work, and I am NOT by any means saying that you do this, is that people who make good money could then get a house that is out of their price range, a really expensive car, etc and qualify for public assistance, taking the assistance away from people who need it.
redchief replied: I feel your pain. The main reason I took the second full time job was that the hours worked with my plumibng business. Health insurance costs just became too much of a burden for our small business so we had to find another way to get health coverage. Lisa and I both agreed that it was still better if she could stay home at the time, so I became a 90 hour a week member of the workforce.
CantWait replied: I'm so sorry. We've been there before when it comes to student loans, and those have to be paid back. I hope you find something soon. Can you appeal it?
ashtonsmama replied: Sorry--hope it improves soon. We're going through some of the same with the money issue. Prayers.
Ashlynn's Mommy replied: To tell you the truth, I don't even want to try. It's to upsetting to me. They are going to tell me again, that my bf makes too much money. I don't want to go through the disapointment again. I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Now my bf is telling me he wants to get married, and put me on his health insurance. I know that's not the only reason why he wants to tie the knot. I know he's been wanting to take the step for quite some time now. We have been together 7 years. I on the other hand don't ever want to get married. I love him (well sometimes anyway lol), but marriage is not for me. Well i'm looking for a part time job right now, so I can get insurance. I didn't want to do that cause I have no idea how i'm going to juggle school, kids, house, and bf. That's why I went to the state. But they are not going to help me, so i'm just going to stay srtong, and try not to let it get me down. Thanks for all of you replies, and support. You guys are great.
gr33n3y3z replied: The sad part is for parttime work they wont offer insurance well not here in S. NJ bc you have to work x amount of hours a week and they keep you just under the amount. Yes and I agree its stinks I guess thats the price we pay for being in the middle bracket maybe your BF idea is best but have you have to want it too.
amymom replied: hi I live in NYS too! Look into Family Health Plus. (SS should have suggested it!) It is a NYS program that you may be eligible for. Here is a link to the website:
START HERE
It may be good for you. Let me know if I can help you figure it out at all.
I do think your BF idea is best, BUT I am a traditionalist at heart. I would never tell you what to do though. Good luck to you
AND I want to add DARN NYS!!!
C&K*s Mommie replied: I have to agree with Pam (brookeandmadison's mom) and Lisa (gr33n3y3z) there is a reason that they base assistance on your income to debt ratio. And unfortunately taking a p/t job will not put you in line for health insurance. The only thing I could possibly suggest is going to your local Health Department, and sign up to recieve care from them. They may have a program that will allow you to pay a set co-pay for each visit. It may be based on your households income. Depending on the bracket you fall into, will determine your co-pay amount.
I would give them a visit. I am sorry you are being given the shaft by the state, but dishonest people make it difficult for honest people to get the help they need. As the saying goes, one apple can spoil the whole bunch.
Ashlynn's Mommy replied: They said our income was too high for family health plus, and medicaid. It is very true, "one apple can spoil the bunch" Here i am an honest person who needs a litte help for a short time, and i can't get it because of the dishonest people out their. Wich reminds me, while I was there yesterday applying for the insurance, the rep that was helping me got a phone call from her boss. He told her that when she did an application for someone else a couple of weeks ago, they put false information down, and now that family is being investigated for fraud. The rep said that she now has to call that family and tell them, that the state knows that they lied on the application for insurance and now they are being investigated. She said they can be given a fine or face jail time. So I guess it's people like that who spoil it for honest hard working people like us!!
holley79 replied: Honey I quit trying to figure out the state aid a long time ago. I was in a wheel chair and needed help with medical. I was still employed but unable to work. They told me I made too much money also. I was like, WTF?? how can that be I'm in a wheel chair and not able to go to work. Who knows with these things.
TheOaf66 replied: yep gotta love that system, it is the same w/ financial aid for school etc, so apparently the solution is not to work and don't make any money
MyLuvBugs replied: I totally feel your pain sweetie! BELIEVE ME!! Each state is different, but I know that here in NE we had to submit ALL bills and ALL income for them to run through their little calculator system. That's the only way we got it. No income and lots of bills. But we couldn't get food stamps (not really a biggie) b/c we had too much in savings, bonds, and our daughters CD's.
I hope you find a job soon sweetie!
na81 replied: I hear ya here too- things can be rough, and it makes it even harder when you can't get the help ya need! Hope you are able to find a job soon!
