I'm waiting for the full story to draw - my conclusions
mckayleesmom wrote: My sister just called me to tell me that my nephew Timothy was in serious trouble at school. From what she could gather him and another student were in the parking lot of the school and they started tossing rocks and one hit a windshield of a teachers car and shattered it.
They had called the police to make a report and told my sister to tell my mom that she would be responsible for paying for the damages. The cops were going to bring him home.
Ok...I agree that he needs to be punished and my mom should pay SOME of the damages, but I can't be the only person wondering why 2 little 6 year olds were allowed to wonder away from their class into a parking lot in the middle of a school day. How does that happen?
CantWait replied: Awwww ya, I'd be questioning that as well.
mckayleesmom replied: I just talked to my sister and she said that the two boys were sent up to the office to drink a cop of mountain dew. Apparently there is a theory that this is suppose to calm them down. After they were done they were sent back to class and were walking by the parking lot when it happened. The school is enclosed by a fence, but the fence meets up with the parking lot and there are rocks on the inside...thats how they got the rocks. Either way I'm suprised that these two little boys were trusted to walk back to class by themselves. Timothy has been getting into tons of trouble at school and my mom is still working with the mental health center to get him diagnosed...The school knows that Timothy is constantly getting into trouble and never following directions...so why would you believe he would actually listen to what he was suppose to do now?
Crystalina replied: The school has them drink Mt. Dew? WTH?
stella6979 replied: Ummmm.....I think I'd be looking for a different school.
AlexsPajamaMama replied: oh wow the whole thing is just sketchy to me especially the mt dew, that stuff does not calm kids down....
CantWait replied: Ummmmmyaaaaaaaa give a child a drink that's made of nothing but PURE sugar to CALM him down...
maestra replied: Supposedly, I have heard there is a theory that kids with add or adhd will actually calm down with doses of caffeine. ADHD drugs like ritalin are stimulants (or so I've been told), so the caffeine is supposed to work like the drug. There is a first grader in the class across the hall from me whose mother suspects he has adhd, so she sent him to school the other day with a large water bottle full of coffee with hazelnut creamer. We took it away. We don't really support this at my school. I'm really surprised that a school would be doing that.
maestra replied: Oh, I just found this http://www.come-over.to/FAS/MtnDew.htm. I dont even know.
jacobsmama replied: Wow!! I can't believe what I am reading. I think the school is at fault, if they are getting in trouble, they should NOT have been in the halls or outside alone let alone together to cause trouble!
CantWait replied: I call BULL PUCKY!!!!!
mckayleesmom replied: This was the theory that they were going on.....They didn't give him a while can of MT. Dew...Just a little shot glass full. Even so, they knew these two little boys have been having behavior problems..So why would they think they would do the right thing and go back to class?
mckayleesmom replied: Timothy can't even go a full school week without getting kicked off the bus at least once, if that gives you an idea on how bad he is. He gets letter's home almost everyday for being bad.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I had heard that too...think it is total BULL but I will leave it at that!
Bri I would be voicing those exact questions to the school (LOUDLY) if I was your sister and mom! I don't care if the lot os fenced or not why in the world would 2 6 year olds kids have access to it?
mckayleesmom replied: Thats what I said.
My mom said that the cop that she talked to said that she is still responsible for what he did.
I told my mom she should pay it and then take it up with the school board because they obviously did something pretty dumb themselves. There is no way that this should have happened, especially when they know his history.
sparkys2boys replied: Oh wow, it all sounds so stupid if you ask me. I can't imagine letting two kids that age wander around alone, esp. ones that JUST got into trouble for not listening.. umm DUH!
I feel bad for your poor mom, I hope she can get some help to get him under control
Our Lil' Family replied: Ritalin and Adderol are stimulants in people without ADHD, which is why you will find drug addicts that do not have ADHD buying them. For kids or adults with ADHD they do the exact opposite because of a neurological (chemical) imbalance. We studied this in depth in my Psych classes. So I can see why they think Mountain Dew would calm them, but that's only if they are TRULY ADHD, if they haven't been diagnosed that could back fire on them. I can't imagine how a school could be approved to try this little experiment and if it was my child getting the drink I'd be throwing a fit!
PrairieMom replied: If my school took it uppon them selves to diagnose my child with ADHD and treat him with MT dew I would be livid! basically, that is like medicating a child, which you have to sign a form to specifically allow them to do. Maybe this can be turned around on the school some how.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: We had the same thing happen with Spencer last year. He chipped the windshield of a teachers car by throwing handfuls of little stones. The police were called and he was suspended for I think the rest of the day (can't remember). But if there had been any repairs done to the windshield than we would have had to pay for them. Luckily, it was a small chip and the teacher told us not to worry about it. I'm not sure why we would have had to pay for the damages, but we would have anyway. It was our son that did it.
