Insurance question... - need help :)

jacobsmama wrote: I was wondering if any knows of a insurance company that I can call to try and get a secondary insurance for jacob??? My husbands insuarnce sucks! each year since jacob has been born we have to pay 2500 dollars in medical bills!!!!

It goes they pay the first 1500 then you pay the next 2500 then they pay 100%. But each year be get the 2500 paid right at the end of the year and then it starts over! Very frustrating and from jacobs seizure this year the ambulance bill alone was 2500!!! bawling.gif

So anyhow I'm trying to find a second insurance to get that would be cheaper than 2500 dollars a year am I crazy? Does anyone have any ideas?? I would appreciate it!!! thanks alot, Kristi wub.gif

PrairieMom replied: private insurance is usually pretty expensive. When we were looking I found an insurance agent that deals with health insurance, and he was very helpful. We have Bc/Bs, and I wouldn't really recomend it. i have heard bad things about it, and while I haven't had any problems with them myself, I'm not overly impressed with them either.
insurance makes me crabby. growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif

jacobsmama replied: me too!

Kaitlin'smom replied: I woudl suggest talking to your Car insurance company (if you like them) and ask if the sell group health insurance. Health ins is crazy our new one kick in next month and while DH new company pays for it, I am hoping we dont run into any problems case to be honest it sounds to good to be true.

I know Allstate sells health insurence and I am sure some of the other national companys do also make some calls.

jacobsmama replied: thanks! I never thought about car insurnace have group insurnace too!

coasterqueen replied:
I'm suprised you have issues with BC/BS. I have BCBS but it's kind of a weird plan because DH's employer self-funds as well. It's kind of like BCBS is the administrator, very confusing. BUT I have no problems with them. They are a bit slow on some things, but that's about it. Maybe it's my DH's plan being a bit self-funded, not sure.

PrairieMom replied:
I wouldn't be happy with anyone. insurance sucks. Bc/Bs was just the lesser of the evils for us. growl.gif I haven't had a problem with them becuase we really haven't had to use it yet. However, they would only cover DH and the Boy. i have Asthma, so they attached a 3 year rider to me and won't cover any treatment for my asthma. (which is basically the only reason I need the insurance in the first place.)

mom21kid2dogs replied: Have you checked with your local health dept (if you are US)? He should qualify for some assistance under the children with medical handicaps program. I *think* that program is Federal not state. Certainly worth a shot. Olivia and I have private health insurance through Assurant Health. It is very affordable (I think we pay around 150 a month), includes a prescription plan and is only 1K deductible. I doubt secondary insurance will solve your problem, though. It's my understanding that secondary insurance will only pay once you've maxed your primary.

coasterqueen replied:
Oh yeah that's right, I remember now.

I agree, insurance sucks in general. dry.gif

luvmykids replied: Have you checked into co-insurance? It's a secondary plan that you pay for and the point of it is to cover the gaps your other insurance leaves.

We also have BCBS and I do not like them one little bit!

Kaitlin'smom replied:
really I think our new one is Bc/Bs and they are covering us and I have asmatha, hummm I need to check to see who we will be with........

jem0622 replied: I have BCBS Open Access. No problems here. Sorry you are having trouble! What about AFLAC? Would they be able to offer anything? I second checking with your health department!

jacobsmama replied: Thanks for all the great ideas, I did check with health dept first as jacob use to get his shot there but the only program they offer is mediciad and we don't qualify for that by any means you have to make like 10,000 dollars or less a year..

it was frustrating just because we do work we can't get help ya know? Anyhow I"m jusst looking for something that I could get that would pick up the slack that would cost me less than paying out the 2500 each year because that is usually one lump sum the way jaocb is going blink.gif AFLAC was too expensvie wouldn't be worth what we would have to pay.

I will try the other ideas though~ Thanks again wub.gif

mom21kid2dogs replied:
The program I am referring to is not a medicaid program. In Ohio, it's called Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH). They pay only fees related to the child's specific medical condition (testing, medication, braces, surgery,,etc)upto a certain amount a year (around 5K, IIRC) and is very generous on it's sliding fee scale. Several years ago a family of 4 could make 56K and still get benefits. If he's getting services in a children's hospital, you might ask a social worker there about it. They might have more info than your local HD.
