jcc64 replied: Well, if the Duggars alone stop having kids, we'd probably be in better shape. rolling_smile.gif

I think we can see where that approach would get us by looking at China where the population of males continues to grow while female pop. dwindles. You'd have a lot more abortions or orphans (sadly) because though we don't want to believe it, there are individuals who would be determined that their ONE child would have to be a male or a female. I have a feeling it would become a very sad situation eventually (I mean who ever really thought female babies would be left on street corners to die in China?) unsure.gif

Other than that I can see it resulting in a lot of bored children and a lot of sad parents. (nothing against only children... some are happy that way, others never are. Some parents are happy with one but many aren't.)

A limit might not be a horrible thing, but one child is pretty extreme.

redchief replied: How's that work again?

China has roughly the same land area as the USA, but the United States only has one quarter the number of people living on the land mass.

India has a third of the land mass of the US and China, but supports 3 1/2 times the human inhabitants. Other Asian countries show similar land mass to population problems. In other words, we can feed our people. Asia is having a difficult time feeding it's population.

If things keep going as projected, the United States and other industrialized nations will see a decrease in population over the next 50 years. World population is expected to go up between 35% and 40% over the next 50 years and all of that growth is expected to be in Latin America, Africa and Southern Asia. What's really scary is that Africa's population is expected to soar from the 900 million people it has now to more than 2 billion. They can't feed their people now.

I think the de-populate the world folks are looking in the wrong breadbasket... With the possible exception of the Duggars ( wink.gif )

ETA: Before I'm corrected... The US population is expected to increase, but not due to native population growth. US population is expected to grow due to continued influx of Latin American immigrants. As an ethnic demographic, Hispanics have already become the largest minority in the USA. By 2050 a quarter of the population of the United States will be Hispanic (not including Puerto Rico).

jcc64 replied: Well, before we pat ourselves on the back, we're not feeding ALL of our people, Ed. Lots of people go to bed hungry in this country, most of them children.

And about the 25% Hispanic thing, looks like it's time to start learning Spanish......

Kentuckychick replied:
That's why we're going to see a decrease I guess... we may have the capability to feed our people but we don't. So those who can't feed themselves starve to death.

This might not be the solution either...

redchief replied:
Jeanne, you're absolutely right, and that's inexcusable because that we're not feeding all of our population isn't the fault of the land. Heck, the government pays farmers not to produce! The fault is in our inability to look beyond our own walls to those who need charitable assistance. I often think of the food we throw away and how nutritious our discards would be to kids who haven't had a decent meal in ages.

Unfortunately the poor are invisible, no matter where in the world they live.

?Se habla espanol?

redchief replied:
I wish I knew the answer. It's an unfortunate fact that the poor aren't just hungry, they're distrustful, so the feeding the poor street is clogged with distrust and pride on one end and red tape and unrealistic regulations on the supply end of it.

jcc64 replied:

Si, hablo espaƱol, 6 credits worth this semester.

Un poquito laugh.gif

However, we have in the last several years had an iflux of Spanish speaking immigrants to our area and EVERYTHING that comes home from school, from homework assignments to school handbooks, is in English y Espanol.
