Invaded by mini praying mantes

this morning we were on our way out the door and kylie told me she saw a bug. so i came over to where she was standing and i freaked out!!!! there were DOZENS of teeny tiny praying mantes all over kylie's little tikes jungle gym by the couch. i immediately started killing them.....ALL OF THEM. it was so gross and i'm still freaked out about. i hope there aren't any hiding still.
a couple of weeks ago kylie decided to put a bunch of rocks in a plastic tub and bring them in the house. i told her numerous times to take them outside, but both her and dh kept saying that the rocks were her family. So she was keeping the tub in her jungle gym. one must have laid eggs somewhere in a rock becuz when i went to kill them this morning there were dozens more in the plastic tub. i put the tub out in the yard so some of them got to live.
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
AshleyRose replied: Those things freak me out really bad. I heard it was illegal to kill them though!!!! Maybe its different in each state, not sure.
ediep replied: gross! i would have freaked too!
mckayleesmom replied: ewww......what is it with bugs
kit_kats_mom replied: wierd. I've seen those little guys. One is kinda cute but even a ton of teddy bears would make me uncomfortable. Hundreds of those things? Fergiddit about it.
5littleladies replied: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! I would have freaked out too!! I probably would have packed up the kids and ran out of the house and left the bugs for dh to deal with.
3xsthefun replied: yuck..I've seen some weird looking bugs around here. I'm not even sure what they are anymore. Alot of them are pretty scary looking!
I've also heard it is illegal to kill them? I don't understand why it is, really?
AshleyRose replied: Thank you!! I thought I was losing my mind!! I saw one and was so freaked out and I wanted to kill it but my mopm said it was illegal to do that and I thought that was quite weird considering, how would they know??
but then my step dad stomped on it and said "he was on MY property, though.. so i dont care" typical of him... hes just obnoxious
amynicole21 replied: Ew Ew Ew Ew ewwwwww~!
I thought it was illegal to kill them too, but I googled it and it doesn't appear to be... you're off the hook
redchief replied: There is no federal law protecting mantids (the plural of mantis). There may however be state or local laws that protect them; though there is none in NJ.
Now all you ewwies and skeevers should know that in killing the mantids, you have ensured the survival of perhaps millions of more unsavory insects such as mosquitoes, flies, beetles and ants. Praying mantids are in a catagory called "beneficial insects." They kill all of the above and aphids, tomato moths and any number of other crop destroying insects. And they eat A LOT!
I happen to think praying mantids and walking sticks (another type of mantis) are COOL!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Okay, I'm with Cary on this one...ONE Mantis is cool, but DOZENS.... NO WAY!!!
We actually don't have them around here. I haven't seen one since I was little.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Gross!
Did you know that female Praying Mantids behead their mate after...um...reproduction?
ions_momma replied: Ewwwww! I hate bugs! I would of freaked out!
redchief replied: Mantids are voracious insect eaters, including other mantids. There has been documentation of females eating their mates, but it isn't the norm. Much depends on the female's appetite at mating, I suppose.
Now you know why I don't let gr33n3y3z go hungry for very long
luvbug00 replied: that's funny! I like them. I think they are kinda cute. Other bugs I can pass!
coasterqueen replied: you all are making me laugh. never heard they were illegal to kill. i let some of them go but there was no way i was letting them live among me .
I would have let dh take care of it but he's out of town til tomorrow night.
A&A'smommy replied: EWWWWWWWW OMG I hope you got them all
BTW I LOVE your siggy they are SOO beautiful and I love sepia its my new fav lol
lisar replied: My DD likes to catch snails. I wont even let her bring those in the house. I dont want them climbing up my walls. But now you got me thinking twice about letting her bring rocks in from now on.
Lisa
paradisemommy replied: well i'm guess i'm in the minority..cause i think they're kinda cool too!! we have them over here in hawaii and they are pretty big..i'll usually try and catch them for taven to look at since he LOVES his bugs!! LOL
coasterqueen replied: thanks
coasterqueen replied: yeah, not EVER letting kylie bring in rocks.
i think 1 is cool but dozens (literally!) in my livingroom......NOPE.
My2Beauties replied: Ugh I am crawling with the "itchies" now, I absolutely cannot stand bugs! My DH thinks mantids (as Redchief so properly told us ) are the coolest thing ever, when he sees one he picks it up and is like "look at the praying mantis" I of course run for cover, because any and all bugs are out to destroy the earth in my opinion! I HATE BUGS! Of any kind, they are not cool, they are not cute, they are so freaking disgusting and gross and none of them benefit me in any way
My2Beauties replied: What is this?
Please don't think I am dumb
kit_kats_mom replied: I know the T1 is typing one handed. I have no idea about the NAK.
Naked, one handed typing? Nursing and knoshing and one handed typing? (talk about multi-tasking!) Nursing a kicker and one handed typing?
So Karen, what is it?
redchief replied: Me too... just thought it was one of those "you don't know because you're male" things! LOL
Bugs are cool
coasterqueen replied: Nursing At Keyboard you are right on the other one.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Will have to remember that one!
My2Beauties replied: DUH I should've known!
redchief replied: And the award today for most quote boxes in a reply to a thread goes to:
hannasmommy. LOLOL
Oops... I just beat ya!
My2Beauties replied: Nope - now I beat you!
