Is it true? - each baby weighs more than the other?

CAMSMOM1 wrote: I'm not pregnant, but my DH has been talking about having a 2nd baby. I'm not convinced yet that we are ready. I had a really hard labor and it was very scary, so I'm not sure that I want to start trying just yet. My DH wants our kids to be close in age, but I"m wanting to wait another year...anyways....that's an on going discussion, haven't made a decision yet.

My question was this, my son was a very large baby. I measured at 6 weeks ahead of my due date, so they induced me. He weighed over 9 pounds.

I have heard that your youngest is usally the smallest, 2nd baby is bigger, and so on. So if I had a 9 pound baby, is the next one likely to be just as big or bigger? All the babies in our family are at least 8 pounds or bigger. My sister had two babies that weighed 10 pounds. When I was born, I was 9 pounds. Is it hereditary? It seems like it....and 8 pound baby in our family is small.

I was just wondering if this is true, that I'm probably going to have a big baby or possibly bigger than my son? Or is this a myth? Did your babies get bigger each pregnancy?

Ann

MomToMany replied: No, not true, or my girls would've been 10 pounders.

#1 7 lbs.
#2 8 lbs. 9 oz.
#3 9 lbs.
#4 7 lbs. 11 oz.
#5 7 lbs. 19 oz.

If you were big or small, then you babies will tend to be. But a lot has to do with the mother's diet & health as well. Girls are usually smaller than boys. So, it's not certain that your next baby will be over 9 lbs. You will just have to wait until s/he is born.

PrairieMom replied: Why was your son so big? was he just a big kid or did you have gestational diabetes or something like that? I have heard that each pregnancy is very diffferent, so i'm not to worried about haveing a bigger baby next time. Although, The Boy was only 7 pounds when he was born, so that wasn't to scary.

danahas4monkeys replied: no not true my first was 7lbs 13 oz, second was 8lbs 14 oz, third was 7lbs 15 oz and my 4th was my smallest baby of all at 7lbs 10 oz.

kimberley replied: total myth wink.gif

first: 8lbs 8oz
second: 7lbs even
third: 7lbs 3oz

PhiMuMommy replied: it was with my sister. her first 3 16 the next was 5 lbs the next 6 the next 7. (her first was premature.)

i hope not i dont' think i can fit anymore baby than what i had last time in me..lol.

jcc64 replied: My 3rd and last was my smallest, by far. Almost 2 lbs smaller than the one before.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: depends...

it was true for me: 6"15, 7"3, and 8"9.

My mom's receptionist (also a family friend) tells usd the her first sibling weighed 7 pounds, and the last born weighed 14 pounds. Probably BS... but scary all the same.

CAMSMOM1 replied:

No, I didn't have diabetes, or any complications. 100% normal pregnancy. I gained 35 pounds, but that's somewhat normal, right?

I don't know why he was so big. I started showing at 3 months and had to wear maternity pants. He also measured big, 6 weeks ahead of my due date. emlaugh.gif I had the biggest belly you've ever saw, I'm not exaggerating at all. He weighed 9 pounds 1 oz, and was 21 1/2 inches. And who knows what he would have weighed if they didn't induced me. emlaugh.gif

And after he was born, he has always been in the 100 % for his age group. He weighed 13 pounds when he was only a month old! And now he is 36 pounds and only 20 months old. He is also on the 100% for his height, he is measuring like a 2 1/2 year old. He's always been a huge guy.

I was a big baby, so was my husband. All the babies in my family are at least 8 pounds or more. So I'm wondering if that part is hereditary? unsure.gif

moped replied: I had a big baby - neawrly 10 pounds, I am not a huge person, gained a ton of weight and had a big boy - I dont think that means I would have another monsterous baby..........................your body will carry the size of baby that your body allows.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Matt was slightly bigger than Katy at birth (4oz)but my step-sisters kids got almost a pound smaller with each of them.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I hardly think weight gain in mommy has anything to do with it.

my 1st - I gained over 70 pounds - he was 6"15 lbs, 19 1/2 (or 3/4?) inches long.

my 2nd - I gained about 40 pounds - she was 7"3 lbs, 19 3/4 (or 1/2?) inches long

my 3rd - I gained about over 50 pounds - she was 8"9 lbs, 21 inches long

Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I know what you mean by having a big baby, Mackenzie was 9 pounds 6 ozs and 21 inches long. I was due the 18th and she came onthe 14th. I gained 50 pounds with her. We will have to wait and see if my second is bigger, but that won't be for a few more years!

Insanemomof3 replied: I think it is a myth too.

#1) 8lbs 7oz

#2) 7lbs 5oz

#3) 6lbs 14oz

That is how my kids were. smile.gif I don't remember what I gained with my boys, never over 40lbs. But with my daughter (my oldest) I gained 70lbs. blink.gif

A&A'smommy replied: Yes it is hereditary my dr. asked me what I weighed and what my dh weighed.. if my dh wouldn't have been a month early he probably would have been (he was a little over 5lbs) 8lbs or so, I was 7 something and alyssa was 8.9

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
ITA. I only gained 25 lbs with Wil and he was a big 8.5 lbs! But I do think it has a lot to do with the parents genes...I'm not so big, but the men on DHs side are pretty husky.

My3LilMonkeys replied: Well it was true for me.

Brooke - 8lb 1.5 oz
Madison - 9lb 1 oz

But in general it is a myth I think. As for hereditary, I was 6 lb 13 oz at birth and DH was 7lb 4 oz so in our family it doesn't seem to be.

CAMSMOM1 replied: Thanks ladies for responding. When I read all the posts, it seems like it's still in the air, if the myth is true or not. My doctor said it is hereditary, if you and your DH were big babies, most likely yours will be too. Hopefully with my next one it'll be under 9 pounds!

mummy2girls replied: no.... with me it was true though. Jordan was 711 and jenna was 8

But my mom.... Brother 8lbs 8oz
Me.... 10lbs 2 oz... yes my mom hates me...LOL
Sister 9lbs 7 oz...

Mom2Boyz replied: I gained about 20lbs with Conner he weighed 6lbs 13oz (probably would have been 8 if he wasn't 3 weeks early)
And I gained over 40lbs with Caden and he weighed 7lbs even and he was born just 3 days before my original due date.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else and say it's more hereditary than anything else.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: laugh.gif Well for me it was backwards. The more children we had the smaller they got. Emily was 7lbs 10oz, Spencer was 7lbs 4oz and Claudia was 5lbs 15oz.

MamaJAM replied: I know people who's kids have been very different sizes. One of my good friends had two babies...one being 10 pounds - the other being 6.5 pounds....I think in that order.

For me - all of my kids have been roughly the same weight at birth -
DD#1 - 7lbs 12.5 oz....born at 42 weeks
DD#2 - 7 lbs 15 oz....born at 41 weeks
DD#3 - 7 lbs 12 oz....born at 38w1d
DS#1 - 8 lbs 2 oz....born at 39w1d
DS#2 - 8 lbs 1 oz....born at 38w6d

I don't think there's any way to tell/guess what size each baby will be.
