Is this an ebay scam?
coasterqueen wrote: I got two emails this morning from checkout@ebay.com stating that someone is sending me money via "Credit Cards" for $25.76 for their item. It appears to be for a printer cartridge. Ummmm, I'm not selling a printer cartridge. So I go to click on the auction link to investigate it more and it wants me to sign in to ebay with my username and password. I'm a bit reluctant to do so. Anyone get an email like this?
MommyToAshley replied: It sounds like a scam to me. I would log into Ebay by typing www.ebay.com in a new window and log into your account that way to check your messages and status. (Do not use the link in the email)
When you click on the link, it will show the ACTUAL url you are going to, I'm willing to bet it isn't ebay.
coasterqueen replied: Good idea. I'll do that. Thanks!
mckayleesmom replied: Let us know what happens
coasterqueen replied: Good call Dee! There are no messages like that in my mail box on ebay. I'm getting sick of all these ebay and paypal scam emails I keep getting. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
amynicole21 replied: When you click the link (or hover your curser above it) always make sure the address is blahblahblah.ebay.com. If it's a scam, it will send you somewhere else.
Kaitlin'smom replied: yep I had one like that I hovered over the 'link' and saw it was not going to ebay. I keep getting them from paypal and they even include the part about not using the link and going to a new browser I just delete them
MommyToAshley replied: Be careful about trusting the url shown when you hover over the link. There is actually code that can be put on an HTML page that makes the link when you hover appear different from the actual URL. If the email is an HTML email, then I am sure the code would work in the email as well. I didn't know about this until Rod showed me how to do it for a client ... for legitamate reasons. They wanted promotional wording to show instead of the url.
coasterqueen replied: Well here is the email, if it's ok I post it. It actually has a person's name and address where to send the item to.
I will be sending payment of US $25.76 for my item. I will be sending payment of US $25.76 via Credit Cards shortly.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I forgot about that, sometimes they are good and will fix that so it really looks like your going to the right site until you click it, I had gotten one form paypal about a new e-mail adress added, and I showed it to DH and said looks like they are getting smarter. Then I contacted them and they confiremed it did not come form them.
C&K*s Mommie replied: if you do not mind installing things onto your comp, I would suggest downloading the ebay toolbar. The ebay toolbar's most important feature is account guard. Anytime you log onto the genuine ebay website or paypal the account guard turns green. It also has other features like convienence buttons, that I utilize but account guard gives slight peace of mind.
THIS MAY BE HELPFUL TOO:[/B] (found in ebay security section) Site Indicator changes color to indicate verified or potential spoof sites Located prominently on the toolbar, the Site Indicator changes color to indicate whether you're on a verified site or a potential spoof site. The Site Indicator turns: Green if you are on a verified eBay or PayPal Web site Red if you are on a potential spoof site, and Gray if you are visiting an unidentified Web site. Note: Gray will be the most frequent indication when you are not on eBay or PayPal Web site.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Another suggestion - whenever you go to ebay, whether by typing it in yourself or clicking on a link, make sure the address to the sign in page starts with https://
The 's' is for secure - false ebay sites won't have it.
toady_buckshot_noodle replied: [SIZE=14]I GET THOSE KINDS OF THINGS ALL THE TIME! NEVER OPEN THEM! IF YOU DO THEY ARE ABLE TO TRACK YOUR E-MAIL AND GET YOUR INFORMATION. CLICK FORWARD AND SEND TO "SPOOF@EBAY.COM" AND THEY WILL RESPOND AND LET YOU KNOW IF IT WAS REAL. IF IT WAS NOT THEY WILL FORWARD IT TO THE APPROPRIATE AUTHORITIES.
