Jakob's food allergies

boyohboyohboy wrote: The good news is he is trying and doing well, he is still mainly on the pediasure, but we are weening it down. He does try new foods, and even some of the foods on his allergy list, he is able to tolerate..like the wheat doesnt seem to bother him, nor the rice. (we are not really sure yet about the rice)
but he did get a sip, I mean small sip of his brothers milk and really paid for that, he was so sick, and its one we definately know he cant tolerate...I still think he is really allergic to the soy also, and thats why we are not seeing the progress as fast because the pediasure is full of soy, so I wonder what can he drink if not soy or milk? I dont want to give him juice because it will cause him diarrhea, and with the allergies to apples and orange, it really limits what he can have anyway..

so just wondered what you other allergy parents are giving your kids to drink.

coasterqueen replied: A lot of kids who are allergic to dairy are allergic to soy. What about rice milk if you think he's not allergic to rice?

DansMom replied: Yeah, it's a tough one. Daniel did well on soy, and watered down juice, so our search ended there. I know they have potato milk and oat milk, but not sure how good they taste. I think we tried Oat milk once and it was a bit gritty. Rice milk seems to be what most multiple allergy people use. Pediasure also has whey, which is cows milk, so I think you're wise to wean off that for that reason too. You're not sure about rice, but if you do try rice milk, don't use Rice Dream brand. It's made on shared equipment, and has had several PSA and recalls because milk allergic people reacted. Not a good brand! Edensoy makes a reasonably good brand.

You might also try watered down coconut milk, or you can buy it light. It's got wonderful fats in it. Makes great smoothies mixed with banana.

lisar replied: I am not familiar with this at all. But my sisters son was on Goats milk when he was a baby. I am not educated in this area at all.

boyohboyohboy replied: My DH just mentioned that coconut milk might work, but I wonder if thats from the tree nut family? since he is allergic to tree nuts, and we cant use oat milk , he is allergic to oats,
but the goats milk might be a good idea too, also the added fat calories. wonder if health food stores sell goats milk?

lisar replied:
We got it from the regular grocery store. I cant remember the name brand. He is 8 now and grew out of it. So it was a long time ago. Sorry. Try it and see if it works. I know it made him gain weight. Cause once they found something that worked for him he would eat more cause he wouldnt be sick all the time.

amymom replied: Alot of farmers will have goat's milk. I have a few who have offered it to us for MB, I was told she could not have the goat's milk, due to the lactose. But I never really ever researched it. I think if he can take the rice that the rice milk may be your best bet to start with. Tracy gave you good advice about the cross contamination etc.

coasterqueen replied:
I totally forgot about goats milk. Duh. That's what Megan drinks. She's not allergic to dairy, but when we thought she was we hooked up with a goat farmer about an hour away and Megan LOVES the taste of it. She's the only one who does blush.gif , though. If you do go that route go visit the farm, make them take you through their process, etc so you know it's safe. Also I know our farmer's goats produce less milk in the winter so we get several gallons frozen, but then the rest of the winter we don't get any and have to go with something else.

amymom replied: I checked and goat's milk does have lactose. I found some interesting info here:

Dr Sears on goat's milk

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I think coconut is a fruit, but it would still make me nervous since my son also has tree nut allergy. My initial thought was RICE MILK. Most people who have dairy allergy also have soy allergy, so I've heard. Although my husband can't tolerate dairy at all, he does seem okay with soy. It just depends. I have seen water buffalo yogurt at the health food store along with goats milk yogurts. I wonder if their milk is any good? GL.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:

Found at www.tropical traditions.com/faq.htm#21
I'd ask your allergist what he or she considers the coconut to be.

CantWait replied: I know nothing about allergies, but would rice milk be the same as regular or soy???

I'm glad he's showing some progress with his eating.

DansMom replied: Stacy, I thought the same thing about coconuts---but at our last visit to the food allergist, I asked about them, and he reassured us that coconuts are not a nut. They are in the date/palm family, he said. Daniel recently had a sip and was fine (although he didn't like the taste, so oh well!)

On the other hand, the doc had warned us that goat's milk is so similar in protein structure to cow's milk that most people cross-react (not all, but most). I'd proceed cautiously with that, but it may be worth a try.

boyohboyohboy replied: thank you for all the help, its given me lots to think about!
for now we are stuck on the bright beginnings, soy brand of pediasure...but the grocery store ran out and its been 24 hours since he had any. I have gotten him to graze on a few foods, and some soy silk brand milk, and water....he seems ok and happy. so he didnt starve. I think that we can ween even further off this generic pediasure.

flirtycuddle replied: My son is also allergic to dairy and soy and the allergist wants him on the neocate till he is 2. There is a neocate junior or plus one that he will go on next. Also the eo28 splash drinks they have are safe for my ds. Also just a hint with rice milk you will have to add extra oils and such to get all teh vitamines he needs that is why we are staying with formula for my ds

coasterqueen replied: Wow, I didn't know that about goats milk. I, myself, was put on goats milk as a baby because I was allergic to dairy. That's why when we thought Megan might be allergic we put her on that. I learn something new every day. smile.gif

GL Stacy. thumb.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: we dont want to do the neocate , because for one he hates it, and wont take it, its such a fight. and its so costly to waste it. i still have 4 packets of it.
but i noticed yesterday that he had no diarrhea off the generic pediasure, and was still drinking soy milk, so i am wondering if its what the GI said is true then its the sugar overload that is getting him not the soy...
so we are going to try this a few more days, its just he isnt eating what i would like for his nutrition right now.
its trial an error really. i am thankful he has bulked up and has some room to not eat a day or two if he does with out risking more health issues. he is up to 25 pounds now. smile.gif

hoosier momma replied: Stacy, if it's any help, my son cannot drink the pediasure either. It gives him the tummy ache and diarhea no matter what. He does have a sensitivity to tree nuts, but no other allergies that I know of. I've tried to give it to him several different times because he got a taste of it at the sitter's and really likes it.

boyohboyohboy replied:
I dont use pediasure, I just refer to that because I think we are using a bran only our grocery store chain carries,
but its called bright beginnings soy supplement, and they have a website you can check you to see whats in it, but if he likes the taste of the pediasure then he might be able to tolerate this...and it sure has packed the pounds on jake...

sunrosejenn replied:
Eliana can not have ...
milk
soy
gluten
wheat
corn
potato
sugar
white rice

Eliana is currently drinking rice milk. She drank goat's milk too but its way more expensive then rice milk. I live in a small county so I don't have alot of choices like bigger cities.

Pediasure actually has soy, milk and corn in it. White rice is actually not real good for you. Brown rice is better.

What is he allergic to?

boyohboyohboy replied:
jake rast tested positive to
milk
soy
tree nuts
peanuts
brocolli
beef
green beans
rice
choc
oranges
apples
onions
cheese
blue cheese
eggs
avacado
fish
wheat
peas
oats
for starters.....
what we have found however is that just because the rast tested said dont eat it, his body is able to tolerate some of the foods, for example he eats wheat just fine.
we are testing each food for a week, and seeing if he reacts and removing what bothers him, and sticking to what doesnt regardless of what the test says, and as he grows he might still be able to tolerate the offensive foods...
and like with eggs he cant eat a scrambled egg, he gets hives, but he can eat a muffin made with eggs, it doesnt affect him.

its just varies, and its trial and error, thats why we are thinking that the soy bright beginnings might be a sugar over load causing toddler diarrhea not a soy allergy..
since he has taken the soymilk for two days now with no problems or diarrhea..
this sure is like a detective game!

hoosier momma replied:

He doesn't need the pediasure, he weighs 29 lbs at 16 months. He just really liked it. Thanks for the information though.
