Kid Nation?

mummy2girls wrote: Anyone watching it? im not sure what to think of it... blink.gif That 8 year old boy cryign for his mom and dad just broke my heart! sleep.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied: Just turned it on, thanks for the reminder! smile.gif

PrairieMom replied: I have it on DVR< but haven't had a chance to sit and watch yet.

Anthony275 replied: i just finished reading the waiver on the site for that

idk, it'll prolly get really popular and stuff

luvmykids replied: Just a little tidbit, it was filmed about an hour from me laugh.gif

Anthony275 replied: all these kids are opting out to go home?? i think 8 is wayyy too young

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
oh cool!

mammag replied: My kids enjoyed it last night. I know they will keep following it. I was super fond of it myself so I will probably watch something else.

I agree, the 8 year old boy was so sad. I started thinking of Conner being there and he would have probably wanted to come home too.

boyohboyohboy replied: I watched it, and thought it was kinda boring, but the kids crying really bothered me too, I think they were way to young to go on something like that. and it makes me wonder what their parents were thinking about ($$$$) when they let their kids do this..
we wont be watching

lovemy2 replied: I saw something on one of the world news or something last nite they interviewed one of the kids and her mother and this kid and another kid drank bleach on accident - didn't swallow it but the mother said had her daughter swallowed it and had a problem she would have sued the producers ohmy.gif WHAT you let your kid go on it......I won't watch - I think it is a bit crazy - one of the issues with the world these days IMO - let kids be kids for goodness sake - they have to grow up to fast on their own....

lisar replied: I watched it and thought it was good. Those kids will come home with a new out look on life. And realize just how hard there parents work to give them everything they want. They will understand value and respect a little more. JMO though.

My2Beauties replied: I didn't watch it, I watched ANTM and the last episode of Last Comic Standing instead. I might watch it next week though.

TBH, the commercials I've seen really don't look like the show would be too good. There is no way on this planet I would ever let my child be away from me for that long to fend for theirself, wouldn't happen here nosmiley.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: IMO, anyone who would sign a waiver like that and be ok with sending their child needs to check their head. dry.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I wont watch it, I hate seeing the comercials for it.

holley79 replied: I didn't even know it was on. Too busy watching other things.

stella6979 replied: I think it'll be an interesting show and plan to watch it just to see for myself. And I agree with Lisa that it will give these kids a new found respect for people and will help them learn how to communicate and work with others. Now, I would never let my child participate in something like this, but when it comes to these reality shows, nothing is as it seems. They obviously have one adult there and I'd be willing to bet there are more stashed someplace just in case of any emergencies.

PrairieMom replied: okay, I watched it, and I must say, I think that the idea for this show is in poor taste, and I think it boarders nearly on child abuse to to do this to one's children, and I hope they don't do it again.
Unfortunately, it really was captivating TV, and I really enjoyed the show. dry.gif I'll watch it this season, and pray that it isn't done again.

redchief replied: I didn't look at all the posts, worried about a spoiler for me. I missed the show so I'm going to try to catch the encore Saturday night.

NaturalMom replied: i loved this show. i let the kids stay up and watch. now my daughter (8) wants to go on. lol That little boy was so sad but i could tell from the first time i saw him he was a real mama's boy and wouldnt last. lol he was just too young. not so much age wise but maturity level wise. he was such a cutie tho. i wish he would of stayed a few more days. i cant wait for the next one

HuskerMom replied: I watched it last night and thought it was kind of boring. Although it was kind of cute when the girl made enough money for the bike bc she was so happy. laugh.gif

Kentuckychick replied:
I haven't watched it and don't plan to really. There has been a tone of controversey surrounding the show and the bleach incident was only one of many (others included children working from sunup to sundown -- when child labor laws prohibit that, a child not being treated for burns recieved when cooking with oil and several others) I think it took a lot of guts for them to go ahead a continue with the show to begin with.

And I don't think I could ever sign a waiver allowing my 8 year old... or even my 13 year old to do something like that. I think there's a good reason a child can't get a real job until they're 16 or go out on their own until they're 18.

Kentuckychick replied:
That's so sad... and it makes a good point too.

I remember earning money for that sort of stuff when I was young by raking elderly neighbors yards or shoveling snow or babysitting...
It's sad that children can't just do things like that anymore.

PrairieMom replied:
you thought it was cute? I thought it was mean. dry.gif I saw her taking advantage of younger children and duping them out of their $.

Kentuckychick replied:
Oooh... what'd she do??

I figured she had to do a bunch of work to earn the money or something...
I won't watch the show so what'd I miss.

PrairieMom replied:
She didn't really do anything, she basically begged for the $. She stood out in the street and danced, and the kids put their $ in a jar for her. The part that irked me is that she was selling "dance" lessons to younger children. I guess you could look at her as being really enterprising, but I thought she was taking advantage.

HuskerMom replied:
I didn't think she duped them out of their money or took advantage of them. They didn't have to give her any. I thought it was cute bc she knew what she wanted and went for it. I say good for her. But that's JMO.

HuskerMom replied:
She danced, or tried to, she even said she couldn't dance. But she tried. tongue.gif

luvbug00 replied: I i didn't see it.

But from what your saying that little girl did may be wrong and unethical on some level to take advantage of teh younger ones but it's very smart. I mean at some point everyone is taken advantage of wither you buy somthing and find out later it was a bad buy ( like a used car) or not worth the money. It a lesson to learn.

Cece00 replied:
Honestly I dont see how she earned enough $ to buy the bike considering how much money they all had. I think the show edited that one a bit wink.gif

I watched it. I guess it was OK.

Does anyone think some of those kids are just plain WEIRD??? Geez.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
It was repeating the other night so I decided to take a glimpse of the last 15 minutes to see what the buzz was all about. There was one boy who said something to the likes of "It's going to be a very good day, a good day indeed"...I thought he was a little out there. He had dark hair and glasses. That little Jimmy who went home was a doll. Such a sweetie, and so mature for his age I thought.

noimthesister replied: I watched the repeat on Saturday and I was amazed at how much they let the kids do on their own. I've been on big mass camping trips with the SCA (medieval historical thing) so I'm aware of how responsible and enterprising some kids can be (the kids at our camp trips will wake up early to buy ice and bring it down to camp sites and sell it at a profit, or they will play instruments or sing for money). But that "some" is emphasized, obviously some kids are not able to deal with something like this.

This show is like Lord of the Flies mixed with Double Dare. I think the parts where the kids are "on their own" are way more interesting than the competitions and town meetings and whatever. Keep in mind that even when it looks unsupervised there is always at least a camera guy and a sound guy, probably also some "minders" behind the camera.

I think it's neat how the kids really rally around those who are doing work and being kind. Sophia, the older girl who got the bike by giving terrible dance lessons for money, was also the girl who took charge of the kitchen and made sure everyone got fed when they needed to be. The kids probably wouldn't have given Greg, the mean older boy, anything. Sophia was also in the lower-lower class, making only like 10 cents, so it's not taking advantage for the other kids who made 50 cents or a dollar to toss her a nickel if they wanted to.

I would probably let a child of mine about 12 or over participate. As for 8 or 10 year olds, this seems a little crazy. Isn't it illegal even to let them be latchkey kids at 8? Plus, little kids being on the show with 14 and 15-year-old bullies I would be really uncomfortable with.

I will probably keep watching. I saw some of the kids carrying guitar cases on their way into the town, I want to see how that pans out.

Cece00 replied:
YES, that kid was WEIRD. He did more than one weird thing/said more than one weird thing.

There are others too. It seems like they picked a certain kind of kid to be on the show, they all have this similar quality...I dont know how to explain it, though...

stella6979 replied: Ya the kids are a little strange. I wonder if they had to have a certain IQ or something cause they all seem to have a large vocabulary and are very smart. I loved when when that one 8 year old called the 14 year olds "juvenile". Too funny.
With all that being said though, they had the host on the radio this morning and he said that all that stuff about bleach and injuries never happened. He said they do have medical personnel available if needed, but for the most part the kids are on their own (aside from all the camera people). Tonight we'll see if they choose to kill or not to kill. All the host said was that people would be surprised at what a bunch of kids will do for food.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Just saw my first preview of it last night. Still don't really know what it's all about. Someone want to fill me in? Something about kids being all alone, trying to do "adult" like things?? Really strange IMO.

All I can say is "WHAT will they think of next?" Yuck

stella6979 replied:
Basically they took 40 kids ranging in ages 8-14 to run a ghost town. They did give them some supplies and animals but it's up to the kids to make things work. And each week one kid is given a gold star worth $20,000. The town council votes on who gets the star. I personally find it interesting, but that's just me. biggrin.gif

holley79 replied: I just watched it for the first time last night. I think it's a great concept! Had that been around when Brandon was 10 I would have shipped him off. I think it's a great way for these kids to see how great they have it at home and also to appreciate what their parents do for them.
