Kid with a cold sore

PrairieMom wrote: Al woke up this morning with what looks to me like a cold sore. Its on the corner of her mouth, and red, then it might have a white-ish blister in the middle. Its small and hard to see, but there is definitely something there. So what is the deal? we don't get them in this family, so I don't have any experience. Does this sound like a cold sore? is there something I should do? anything safe to give her?

Hillbilly Housewife replied: ick. How did she get that????

my middle child caught the darn virus from an old woman when we were in joliette. Hurray for Herpes. dry.gif

Abreva tends to work well... but Al's a little young not to touch it... just wash her hands often... that crap can spread. dry.gif dry.gif sleep.gif

PrairieMom replied:
Is what I described a cold sore? Yuck. I have no idea where she would have gotten it, There were no obvious contacts, like being kissed by someone with one, or sharing a drink, but she did like the cart at Target last week, puke.gif and She was at the Dr's office last week... who knows. Gross! so will she get them forever now?
Can I put Abreva on her?

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Tara, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions before getting it checked by her ped. I would hate for you to think it's a cold sore, destined to have them for the rest of her life...Only to find out it's a minor little cut or something. Do your kids eat yogurt tubes, because my kids sometimes get little cuts in their mouth from them. DH uses Abreva, but I wouldn't try it on little ones. Again, go see her ped. hug.gif

kimmylyn replied: I would def call the ped and see what they say. I too thought my little one had a cold sore once, only to be that he scratched his lip and it got all swollen.

Good luck!!

lisar replied: To me it sounds exactly like a cold sore. Call the ped cause I am not sure what you can and cant give them at that age.

jcc64 replied: My middle ds gets cold sores ALL the time. It started after a typical cold he had as a toddler. They are annoying and uncomfortable, but we've never sought medical attention for them. I never even heard of Abreva- what is that?
We just treat it topically with something called Lysine, which you can get in the health food store. It definitely lessens the severity and duration. hope she feels better soon!

CantWait replied: Could be a canker sore as well. As she eaten or drinken a lot of things with acid in it. I get cankers when I drink lots of orange juice.

momofone replied: I read abreva's site it said for 12 years and older. happy.gif

PrairieMom replied: I don't really know what she has done lately, since I worked nights all weekend, ( Love my Job)
I'm not really one to medicate for every little thing, so I don't think i will be running out to get anything just yet, I will wait a day or so and see what it does before bugging the Ped about it too. I REALLY don't want to make another trip in there. wink.gif She did get her chicken pox vac. last wed.. I wonder if it could have anything to do with that... She doesn't have any other spots on her tho.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
it's just a topical cream for cold sores/fever blisters

luvmykids replied: I don't know about the age recommendations, but CamphoPhenique might help. It works on cold sores, irritated cuts, canker sores. It numbs them pretty well and if it is just a cut will help it heal faster. I was convinced Colt had a cold sore once but like Rae said, it was a tiny cut that had just gotten bothered and red and oozy.

CantWait replied: It could also be a popped blister from something hot she might have eaten.

Maybe she fell and her tooth hit her lip.

Just throwing stuff out there, could be anything.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Oh yes, my mom used that stuff on us when we had canker sores in our mouth. Been around for years! wink.gif
