Learning to tie shoes

MommyToAshley wrote: How do you teach your child to tie their shoe?

I was teaching Ashley one way.... where you cross over, then make a loop (or bunny ear as we call it), cross over again and make another loop and pull it through.

Well, she was watching a video from the library...it's part of a "getting ready for kindergarten" series that she LOVES for some reason. I think because she loves the idea of kindergarten and loves any books/videos that has that word in it. Anyways, the video showed a different way to tie a shoe.

It started out with two loops (or bunny ears) and tied them together and then just tied them again.

She almost had it down before watching this video, and she only needed help with the last step but now she is confused. Which way do you teach your kids to tie their shoe?

booey2 replied: Well we haven't taught the boys yet, they both wear velcro shoes, blush.gif we gotta get on it. But DH uses the 2-bunny ear method and I was taught the first way you described. So we could have some pretty confused boys. wacko.gif blink.gif

coasterqueen replied: I learned by tieing a fake shoe on cardboard in kindergarten. I've really not approached the situation yet with Kylie because I don't think she's ready. We've showed her how, but she got frustrated too easily so we didn't push it.

MommyToAshley replied:
Ashley is the opposite. She WANTS to tie her own shoes. We have to allow a little extra time when we get ready to go somewhere so she can tie her own shoes. It gets kind of frustrating when we are in a hurry. But she was doing pretty good for awhile... until the video. biggrin.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Maddie was taught the way YOU were teaching Ashley. wink.gif I've known some people to teach their children the other way.

WTG Ashley. That's really awesome that she's wanting to learn so soon. thumb.gif She's growing up so fast. Watch out mommy! wub.gif

amynicole21 replied: Sophia's just like Kylie... she gets too frustrated to work very long on this. We have been using the 2 bunny ear method just because it seems simpler. I always do it the other way though wink.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I guess the first way you described, she wears velco currently. She does not have any tie shoes that fit. She is great about untieing shoes laugh.gif

jcc64 replied: My boys were taught either in pre-K or K, I really can't remember that far back- and the way they were taught is NOT the way I do it. They do the bunny ear thing, and for the life of me, I can't do it that way. When they were first gettting the hang of it, and would get stuck at a certain point, I could never help them b/c I can only do it my way. Needless to say, they figured it out on their own pretty quickly, b/c they had to! rolling_smile.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: I couldn't tie my shoes until I was 9. blush.gif

I learned with the double loops

3_call_me_mama replied: Cameron learned with a lacin gcard of a shoe. ANd a box that had holes punched in it to look liek teh loops of a shoe. We showed him teh way you used Dee Dee and after about a week he had it figured out. He just kept practicing like in teh car and durin gquiet time etc. (Actually one day he sat for about 1/2 hour with that box adn tied and retied until he got it. He figured it out a few months ago, maybe late January. Funny thing, once he learne dot tie, he didn't want to tie anymore !LOL must be form all teh overpracticing!!

luvmykids replied: I learned with the double loops aka bunny ears ... two bunnies, one goes around the other and into the burrow (pulling it through) and out the other side

CAMSMOM1 replied: One of the 1st grade boys in my program didn't know how to tie his shoe, and he was always asking me to do it. rolleyes.gif So one day I told him, if you can learn how to tie your shoe you will get 5 good deed tickets (reward system we use for all the children). So he was pretty excited about that. I spent about an hour showing him, and in 2 days he learned. He was so proud of himself. And now, I don't have to tie his shoes anymore. tongue.gif

His Mom had tried to show him with the bunny ears, so I kept with the same method, since he was used to it. wink.gif

Brias3 replied: I taught them the way you did, not the double loop THEN tie way. The way you mentioned is how I learned too.

Nina J replied: Emily hasn't learnt to tie her's because she's only 2 and a half. And she's addicted to Mary Jane's so she never wear's lace up shoes, she doesn't like them.

But, I was taught the way you are teaching Ashley, and when the time comes that's how I'll teach Emily.

C&K*s Mommie replied: WTG Ashley, for being so motivated to learn how to tie your shoes. bigtup.gif

Sorry you had a slight setback with the video confusing her there, Dee Dee. She is smart she will get back on track and learn in no time.

kimberley replied: bunny ears smile.gif

WTG Ashley! thumb.gif
