Long and Frustrating Day
Kirstenmumof3 wrote: I'm so tired right now! I've been up since 7:30, then we headed to the hospital for 9:00 and sat around waiting for the doctors to decide what they were going to do with Spencer. They think he has Graft-Versus Host disease in the stomach, but that can't determine this unless they do a scope of his stomach. He has also lost about a kilogram since last Wednesday. The IV medication that he was supposed to have today, they didn't have in the hospital. Then I went down to get to get Spencers prescriptions from the Pharmacy and they had to call Spencers Doctor because the dosage had changed. I spoke with the Gastrointestinal Team and they have decided to do a scope and biopsy of Spencers stomach. But they think it would be better if he was an in-patient, this way the procedure could get done in a matter of days. But if he is an out-patient it could take weeks. Anyway Spencers doctor was not willing to admit him so they've told me that it may be done this Friday, but for sure next Friday. I can't tell you how exhausted and frustrated I am!

MommyToAshley replied: Oh no Kirsten!!! I thought he was doing better and getting ready to go home. I didn't realize there was anything else going on... poor guy. This all has to be so frustrating. Hang in there! Many p&pt's!

kimberley replied: it must be frustrating but just try to take things one step at a time. i know you are anxious to go home but each precaution they take now could mean not going back in a month, kwim? i will keep you both in my prayers that you are home soon.

Kirstenmumof3 replied: Thanks everyone! Spencers nurse called us and the procedure has been scheduled for this Friday at 10:00. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he doesn't get bumped! If all goes well we will get results by Wednesday and have a better plan as to when we get to go home!
CantWait replied: I'd be fustrated just at the fact that knowing his illness they are prolonging it just because he's an out-patient. WOW sorry Kirsten, I can imagine how exhausted you are putting up with this. I'm so sorry.
A&A'smommy replied: Poor guy I hope that they get whatever problem it may fixed quickly so he can go home!!

If he has this, what does it mean for him? Is it something that can be treated? What will they do?
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Graft-Versus-Host Disease means that Claudia's cells are starting to attack Spencer's cells. They want a little bit of this to happen, because this means the transplant is working. But they want to catch it before it becomes severe. Right now if it is a mild case he will be put on a mild dose of oral steroids, depending on how well he responds will determine how long he will need to be on the steroids.
