Look at the waist on this woman!

Nina J wrote: I was looking up the history of toothbrushes on wikipedia (geeky, I know), and there is a picture from 1899 advertising toothbrushes. Look at the waist the woman has, that had to be painful!!! ohmy.gif

Go down to History and the picture is there. I wonder how they were when they had children..the hips look like they're matured, but with such a small waist it must've been painful to be pregnant.

C&K*s Mommie replied: I heard that back in that era when waist cinching was ever-popular that it was very painful. wacko.gif The corset (or girdles, cannot remember which) would have to be yanked and pulled very tightly, and it would cause the ribs tremedous pains.

I would imagine if there was any length of time that the woman wore those, then took them off, then being normal was a relief but a painful relief-- at least it looks like it would have been painful to suddenly have things fall back into place by taking that off. And I could not imagine having ribs, and internal organs shoved up and in unnaturally, when babies grow within the mid region internal organs are moved and shifted up, the spine is bent forward, that is not painful since it occurs over time. But forcing it........Yowza! unsure.gif

amynicole21 replied: Yikes! blink.gif They did use to pad their hips for a more dramatic look though - I don't think those are all hers wink.gif

Jeffs Wife replied: OMG, I can just imagine what my husband would say about that, and he thinks I need to gain weight LOL. Her ribs must really stick out....OUCH....Michelle

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Corsetting was an expected practice turn of the century. In fact there are still websites devoted to it and women who rave about it. Corsets are supposed to be much more "comfortable" now, no whale bones. I don't see it.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: Can you imagine how hard it was to breath? You know that whole swooning woman thing? Look at that woman. Just think the heat and not being able to breath. Would have sent me into a swoon.

gr33n3y3z replied: Yikes!!!!!

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Holy!! That's kinda sick!

ZandersMama replied: eeeeeeeekk ohmy.gif

annabanana replied: omg!

holley79 replied: Everything I have read about waist cinching was painful. wacko.gif I wonder if it would work on me. emlaugh.gif

Jackie012007 replied:
The thing is, everything doesn't fall out when you take the corset off. Over time, your body is trained to stay in that compacted shape! So imagine being pregnant with your body trained to be so tight and compacted... OWWW. Also when cinching daily, ribs ended up being broken, and there were instances of punctured lungs and other problems... eek

ashtonsmama replied: You are hilarious, Nina! The history of toothbrushes?
