Lucky Penny... what would you do?
MommyToAshley wrote: Ashley's team won their first two games, and Ashley is playing great! She contributes some of it to her lucky penny that she keeps in her sock, which she lost at yesterday's game. Would you just stick another penny in there and let her think it is her lucky penny, or would you try to convince her that it's the teamwork, hard work and effort that won the game, not the lucky penny?
cameragirl21 replied: does she know she lost the penny? if you stuck another one in there, would she know it's not the same one?
MommyToAshley replied: She doesn't know it is lost yet. She keeps it in the part of her sock that folds down and I usually have to take it out when I wash her uniform. It's not there and she didn't take it.
cameragirl21 replied: Then if it were me, I'd replace it. A good luck charm is only as powerful as we make it and kids have so much imagination and creative energy that I think it should be encouraged. If she believes it brings her luck and it's harmless, then so be it. I think that of course it should be stressed that team work, hard work, etc, are important and that it's not all due to the lucky penny but if she believes it brings her luck then why burst her bubble? It's kind of like Santa Claus, let them believe for as long as they can because the day will come when they scoff at these things.

3xsthefun replied: I think I would replace it. I don't see any harm in her thinking it is lucky.
coasterqueen replied: Hmmm, that's a good question. One I'm not sure without really thinking it through. At this age, I'd probably just replace it. BUT if she mentions being lucky because of the penny again, I'd probably tell her about how it may be the penny, but teamwork, etc has a LOT more to do with it.
Man my grammar is poor today. ETA for that.
CantWait replied: Very well said.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I agree with this.
mckayleesmom replied: How do you know she desn"t didn't take it if she doesn't know its missing?
MommyToAshley replied: It was a late game, it didn't start until 6:45. We went straight home to take a shower and get ready for bed. When I helped her to get her sock and shin guards off, she said, "be careful, don't lose my lucky penny!" -- but she doesn't know it wasn't there.
coasterqueen replied: Awwww. So what did you decide to do?
MommyToAshley replied: Her game is tomorrow. I think I am just going to put another penny in there as if it was never lost. And, I always praise her for her efforts, so that won't go unchanged.
