Maybe I should re-evaluate my job?
coasterqueen wrote: We have interviewed two people in the past two weeks for the temp position of my job while I'm on maternity leave. Neither one of them want the job. The sad thing is they are only getting one tiny aspect of my job responsibilities to do while I am gone. Some of the others are going to my co-worker and the rest of them I'm still going to do on leave, just mostly from home and sometimes I'll come in to do them. I just don't understand. They are also getting paid $20 an hour to temp and hours are GRATIOUSLY flexible for them. What is the deal?
I'm 5 weeks (or maybe 7 ) from delivering my baby girl and I STILL don't have anyone yet. We can't use a temp agency because all the ones we called just specialize in regular office type work and I need someone who can do legislative responsibilities and most of that can't be taught in a few weeks time.
This happened to me during my leave with Kylie, but at that time it was during the summer (out of legislative session) and it was ok to just have a plain office temp. Although we went through 2 before we got one that worked.
I really don't need this stress right now! Some of you may remember how back in December my boss was going to use his "lover" (per se) for my position and I didn't want that because she's out for my job. Well.....my boss' wife and I teamed up together to be sure she would not be able to get the job. My boss informed me last week that he would not use this woman but didn't say why. But I know why, his wife and I have been good at convincing him without him really knowing why. Long story.
ANyways, I'm afraid we are going to have to use her now. Then I'll spend my entire maternity leave worried about my job.
I really thought the money alone and gratious work hours would peak someone's interest. Maybe I need to re-think my job in general because I'm wondering why no one else would want to temp it....why am I even here then?
Boys r us replied: Hmm..that certainly does open up a can of worms and makes ya wonder!!!
$20 an hour is fairly good for temp work and no one wants it?
MomToMany replied: I really do think you need something with not so much stress. I hope "she" doesn't have to work there, and that you can find someone else.
coasterqueen replied: Yeah around here that is REALLY good because the temp agencies get 1/2 of it for themselves and the other half goes to the temp. Since we are not using a temp agency that per hour is really good.
Kaitlin'smom replied: $20 for temp work, I mean how hard can the job be? Hopefully someone else will come along and you wont have to use her.
kit_kats_mom replied: Karen, this may be a blessing in disguise. How much of your job can you do from home? Could you take on more secretarial stuff and pass on the "face" jobs to someone in your office who knows the ropes? Then, since it appears that your boss would have a hard time filling your shoes, I'd ask for either extended home office hours or a raise (since the jerk didn't give you one when he should have). Maybe it would work out to where you could work from home part time?
Kaitlin'smom replied: good point
My2Beauties replied: Wow $20 for a temp position, why would someone pass that up? I am perplexed!
kimberley replied: you are just irreplaceable, Karen . i agree with Cary. give some of the "front" stuff to co-workers and do the rest from home. they really don't realize what a gem they have with you on their side. maybe it's time to check out what the competition is offering
coasterqueen replied: I sooooooooo wish I could do my job from home. Since the office is just me and my boss and well there is my co-worker....she runs our hotline. She actually doesn't get funded to do my jobs and doesn't really have the time since she runs the entire hotline by herself (her funding was cut) so my boss kinda begged her to do some of my stuff while I'm gone.
I wear MANY hats and one of them is to be in the office all the time to "entertain" the lobbyists that come in here as well as answer the phones since it's just boss and me...he's not gonna do that.
It would not be cost-effective for the association to keep me on to do the other tasks that can be done from home and have someone in there to do the other "entertaining" part of it, ya know what I mean? So they'd NEVER go for it, believe me I've hinted about it on many occassions.
OH well, it is a good thought though, just not an option for me .
kit_kats_mom replied: Well, as far as the phones. I WAH and I have a cell phone that is just for work. I only answer it when the girls aren't yelling but no one who is calling know's I'm not sitting in the corporate office.
coasterqueen replied: Cary,
I guess I could have the phones transfered to home (my dad does this) but how would I know if my boss was there and how do I transfer calls back to him? Or for other lobbyists in the office for that matter? I barely know whose here and whose not when I'm in the office. It's like keeping tabs on little kids.
