McDonalds Vent
Kirstenmumof3 wrote: Claudia had her Birthday Party at McDonalds on Septmeber 9. At the Party Spencer set his hip-pack down (which contained his epi pen) and it was forgotten when we left. We actually didn't notice it was missing, this is all so new to us. Anyway about 3 hours after the party an empoyee from McDonalds called us, she had called every Tilbury in the phone book to find out who owned this hip-pack. DH said that he would go and pick it up the next day, but then I had the flu and then Spencer's counts went down and he couldn't go to school. So we weren't really thinking about this hip-pack. Anyway DH went the other day to go and pick it up and the Manager told him that they couldn't find it and that he would talk to the employee to find out were it had been put. We never did get a call back. So today I went in and they told me that it was probably tossed in the garbage. And blamed us for not picking it up as soon as they called. WTF! I realize we need to take some responsibility in this, but why would it get tossed? Why wouldn't they call us back? So I called the head office here in Thunder Bay and filed a complaint, the women I spoke with is going to look into what happened and what can be done. He has an epi pen at the school in his teachers desk and even though notes have been sent home about his allergy, a child still brought a juice box that contained kiwi! This is a life threatening allergy for Spencer, the allergist told us that his next reaction could be fatal. If they can't find the epi pen we need to call his Doctor in Toronto and have them prescribe another one. I can't believe this happened.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Wow, I'd be peeved. Not only over the hip pack, but over the epi pen in general. I have never had to use one or had a child with one, but I know that when someone carries one, it is extremely important for them to have it! I would think that would be common knowledge.
kimberley replied: idiots! sorry, i have worked in stores and restaurants since i was 14yo and we had lost and found stuff for years! especially something as important as medical supplies.. geesh!! i hope the dumb kid gets fired for throwing it out and they compensate you for your trouble.
mom2my2cuties replied: That is awful!
I hope you can find out what happened to it!
Kaitlin'smom replied: okay they should NOT have told you YET it was thrown away till they know for sure. how RUDE, come on like happens...sheesh
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Believe me I'm not worried about the hip-pack. I'm worried about the epi pen. I can buy another hip-pack, it's just going to be the hassel now of having the prescription coming from Toronto and with the new regulations they have to fill out this form for the epi pen to be covered under our prescription coverage.
MoonMama replied: I would be so angry!!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: If it's not covered I would try to make them pay for it since they are the idiots that threw it out. How could someone throw an epi pen away? It's no different than any other prescription. I wonder if they would have thrown someone's heart medication out too? UGH!
holley79 replied: I would be peeved also. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.
luvmykids replied: Was it so much trouble just to put it in the office and keep it around? I hope they either find it or take the responsibility of paying for a new one
gr33n3y3z replied: I wonder if McD's kno what they did was not lawful??? epi pens and old ones have to be turned into the pharmacy or hospital for disbosil *sp not the trash
Did they check the safe perchance?
Kirstenmumof3 replied: They said they checked the safe, but I can't be certain. DH just told me that along with his epi pen is some benedryl, his thermometer and hand sanitizer. He also said that give where we live, and I really hate to think this, that maybe someone took it and sold it on the street. You never know!
Jolyn replied: I'm sorry this happend but it was left there for a long time. It was nice of them to call around to find you and after all that time probably figured you weren't coming in. It's unfortunate but i'm not sure i would blame the employees of Mc Ds.
I wanted to edit to say....I'm not saying i don't understand that you had alot going on and couldn't get there....I'm just saying i don't think you should make them responsible after all that time had passed.
mom2my2cuties replied: Being that it is a medical supply and if I remember correctly, I believe it is illegal to dispose of medical supplies (Rx Drugs) if you are not the Rx holder or a licensed medical professional.
That aside - I don't think they would be responsible, but it would make them think twice next time they threw out someone's meds.
luvbug00 replied: That;s horrid! I'd be livid too if somone threw out Mya's epi!
Kirstenmumof3 replied: I knew eventually this was going to come up. I have already said that we should take some responsibility and that yes, we should have gone sooner. You don't know all of the circumstances. Yes it has been left there for 15 days now. My DH went to see if it was there on September 18, making that 9 days! What I don't understand is why they didn't call us? And what exactly did happen to it? This is not something that we can just walk into the pharmacy and replace, so yes I think they should be held responsible. But again that's just my opinion for what it's worth.
C&K*s Mommie replied: I hope there is not much hassle in trying to get it replaced. Hopefully they will think twice about throwing/mishandling medications.
stella6979 replied: You said they did call you. I understand your anger and frustration, but if it's such an important thing, you should have made it a point to remember the hip pack. 9 days is a pretty long time to wait before going up there, what if he just happened to have an attack somewhere in those 9 days? I'm sure I'm going to get plenty of heat for this, but I just feel that if it's your child's medication (especially something as important as an epi pen) you are the one solely responsible for knowing where it is at all times. Obviously this is just my opinion.
ataylorm replied: From what I have heard, those things aren't cheap, makes you wonder if the kid sold it for some extra cash.
Crystalina replied: I had to Google epipen to see what one looked like. Would a kid even know what it is? and I saw one and I wouldn't think they would be worth anything just by looking at it. It doesn't look like it would be anything to anyone but the person who needed it. kwim? I would not look at it and think $$$. Also to steal the hip pack? Why? there was nothing of interest to anyone in there. Maybe they would take it just to take it but unless you know what it is it would bring no value. Maybe though whoever found it knew what it was. Who knows. My guess is that more then likely it got tossed because of an irresponsible employee. Think about it...McDonalds is totally run my kids.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Epipens usually have a prescription label on them so there shouldn't be a mistake in not knowing it's from a doctor and for health purposes, like any other medication.
I'm sorry, but even if it had been 30 days, it should not have been thrown out. Not with a prescription in it and a medication label in plain view on the pen or box. I would be willing to bet someone took it as well. I am sure there had to be at least ONE responsible adult that works there who would have known what one was somewhere in that restaurant out of all the people who work there.
PrairieMom replied: I wouldn't be suprised if it did get thrown out. I've worked fast food, and know the maturity level of many (not all) of those employees. They probably didn't realize what they had and threw it un-knowingly. These are the same type of people that will serve caffinated coffee when decaff is ordered because, "whats the difference? The customer cant taste the difference" not thinking that that customer might have a heart condition or be a nursing mom, or have some other valid reason for ordering decaff. KWIM?
Boo&BugsMom replied: You bring up some good points. This just reiterates the reason why hubby wont go to McDonald's unless he's literally forced to. He HATES that place and they always get our order wrong, along with many other places as well!
mom2my2cuties replied: Actually Epinephrine is a fairly pricey thing as a street drug - I can't remember the exact drug that it is mixed with frequently - but it was something common.
PrairieMom replied: I'd put up with a great deal of stupidity for some McDonalds fries!
Boo&BugsMom replied: I do for my Big Mac's! With extra sauce to dip it in!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Great...now I'm craving a Big Mac. Darn pregnancy cravings!!!
mom2my2cuties replied: At least it's not a $15/person meal every day and that is all you want for 3 months.
My poor husband - I am surprised we didn't go broke I only wanted 1 thing the entire time I was pregnant and that was Genghis Grill -
Boo&BugsMom replied: I'm always craving Chinese food too...not very cheap. I've got to have my Chicken Fried Rice from the best Chinese restaurant in our town! It is so yummy!
mom2my2cuties replied:
Well Genghis isn't Chinese - It's Mongolian.
I have given up on Chinese since I am not moving back to Wylie, Texas and Mrs. Fang wont move here - I am done risking it.
I did find an amazing Chicken Fried Rice recipe that makes me gag when eating Fried Rice out anymore
Boo&BugsMom replied: That is how I feel about this place I go to. Anywhere else I eat fried rice at never compares to this place. They make it very dark and it tastes so yummy!
I've never had Mongolian food. Is it spicy?
mom2my2cuties replied: You go through this bar type area and pick out the kinds of foods you want - veggies you want - and spice it up how you want with sauces and they cook it on this giant flat grill at about 650 degrees.
So no it's not spicy unless you want it spicy.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Heard back from the Head Office and it looks as though it has been thrown out. I'm supposed to call back on Monday and see what they would like to do, she suggested paying for the cost of the epi pen.
And for the person who once again made the comment about our irresponsibility, we know that Spencer is allergic to Kiwi, so we know not to serve him Kiwi. He wasn't at school and during that week he was very sick. So thanks for throwing that in my face!
booey2 replied: Glad you got an answer and hopefully a solution will come from it.
Terri
Boo&BugsMom replied: Good! I'm glad they are taking the responsibility for it.
As for people saying you are irresponsible...I am sure everyone here can say they have done something like this so nobody here should judge! Nobody is perfect so don't let others beat you up over it.

All i said was i think she shouldn't have held the employees of McD responsible after nine days. Had they lost it or tossed it that day or two yes but after nine days they shouldn't be held responsible. I know we all make mistakes and i've forgotten things before too.
I'm glad that the pen is getting replaced. I'm sure they are not cheap.

Actually, I didn't even know specifically who she was referring to, just making a general comment to make someone feel better. Kirsten has enough going on in her life and I wouldn't want her to make herself feel bad over a simple mistake, that is all.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Jolyn, it wasn't even you that I was commenting on. It was another post. Sorry if I made you feel badly.
gr33n3y3z replied: well the box has a lable on them but not the pen its self I think it should be put on the pen and not the box
gr33n3y3z replied: reguardless of the events here They should have never have thrown it out period!!
I'm glad someone called you and what not
Kirstenmumof3 replied: The label was on the epi pen itself. We threw out the box and kept the instructions with the epi pen.
gr33n3y3z replied: that is so neat bc they dont do that here it goes on the box only to the person who started that
