McKaylee just found a catapillar

mckayleesmom wrote: Its a green one...I have never seen a green catapillar...only white ones. She brought in this branch from outside and said there was a catipillar on it...I didn't even see it at first.

A&A'smommy replied: wow I have never seen a white one only green thats neat!! I love catapillars

mckayleesmom replied:
I remember the ones in school for projects were white and fuzzy....This one is green and no fuzz. I grew up in California though...so maybe that is why.

cameragirl21 replied: Brianne, if you post a pic i'll be able to tell you what kind of butterfly it will be, assuming it's a caterpillar butterfly. if you want to keep it in a jar, take leaves from the tree/bush that Mckaylee found it on because butterfly caterpillars will only eat a certain kind of plant, otherwise they'll starve themselves and die.
it must be pretty cold where you are, i'm surprised butterflies are even laying eggs under the circumstances.

redplaydoh replied: I love caterpillars! We just found one the other day... we had the big green ones in Oklahoma but now that I think about it I haven't seen one of those in a long time. Maybe they weren't in Connecticut and I'm not sure what is here in Switzerland yet.

mckayleesmom replied:
laugh.gif I have to find a jar for him. Right now Mckaylee broke off the leaves from the branch he was on and put him in her barbie tackle box.

cameragirl21 replied: Bri, if it's a long, skinny caterpillar that's like a light green, almost like the inside of a lime and has no fuzz and kind of looks like a worm that was on a green, football shaped leaf then it's a Sulfur, which is the all yellow kind, you can see its pic in my slideshow.
that's about the only kind of all green caterpillar that is a butterfly in the making that's native to FL that i know of. it may be a moth but they usually have more interesting caterpillars...the prettier caterpillars with the fuzz are usually moths and the less interesting kind are typically butterflies.
wherever you decide to keep him, just make sure he gets the leaves from the plant Mckaylee found him from otherwise he'll die for sure.
caterpillars also like banana peels, like the inside of the peel where the fruit is but mostly they need their larval plant leaves, which is what Mckaylee found him on.
if you get to watch the whole process of it turning into a butterfly it will probably be a lot of fun for the kids...and for you. happy.gif

moped replied: They are all green here......I have never seen a white one

Heather77 replied: My kids find caterpillars around here. Usually the ones I see are green!

Hillbilly Housewife replied: The funkiest one we've seen was bright gree, with yellow spiky things on it's behind, and red and blue dots on the sides. Wierd looking thing. huh.gif

sparkys2boys replied: The ones where I live are actually a reddish brown color!!! And in the fall there are tons and tons of em.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: We have little fuzzy orange and black ones with long white spines on them. They are kind of cute, in a look from a distance way.
