Medical Terminology
Boo&BugsMom wrote: YIKES! Since I am interested in the medical field I need to take a medical terminology course in order to get my foot in the door for a Patient Rep. Position or something of the like. Well, I don't have $300 to take a credited class at the college, nor the time, so hubby went to the instructor where he works and they are allowing me to check out the tapes and photo copy the workbook so I can do it at home, but I just wont receive credits for it. I just got done with the first tape, and there are 14 OF THEM! Thank goodness they aren't long so I can do them while the kids sleep, if Aiden lets me . But, I have to say, they are quite interesting. I am learning a lot. I feel smart today!!! Anyone want to know what an Otorhinolaryngologist is??? Or Polyenterocarcinoma?
Calimama replied: LOL so what are those two things?? You've spiked my curiosity!!! Is the course hard?
PrairieMom replied: I used to have flashcards with all the word -pieces on them. The stack was 2 inches high! To bad I don't remember any of it anymore.
Boo&BugsMom replied: Tara, I was counting on YOU to know those!
Otorhinolaryngologist...Ears, nose, and throat doctor
Polyenterocarcinoma...many cancerous tumors of the small intestine
I't's not hard, but there is a lot of information to cover.
PrairieMom replied: I did. I didn't want to spoil your fun. I just think medical terminology is so stupid, because we don't call them that, we call them ENTs, KWIM? also, if you call something a 'Thingey" people still know what you are talking about. Most of the time the nurses i am dealing with have no idea what I'm talking about if I use the "actual" names.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Ditto!!
I do have an awesome terminology book here, though. The PA I worked for gave it to me when I was taking my class. I kept it along with my A&P book. It's still fun to look back on that stuff.
Our Lil' Family replied: Not to toot my own horn or anything but I knew what both of those were! Partly because I ditched the Pediatrician and saw an ENT solely after I was about 2 years old (except for vaccinations) and partly because DH is in Med School! Oh and the "carcinoma" part of the 2nd one is a huge clue too!
Maddie&EthansMom replied: No, really it's not hard. You have to dissect the words.
Oto=Ear Rhino=Nose Larynx=Throat
AND once you are around it more and work in the field and hear it all the time, you will get the hang of it. You will be speaking it like it's second nature.
You are in medical transcription right? Will you work for a specific doctor or a hospital?
Mommy2Isabella replied: I knew the first one because of all my dealing with them lately
interesting knowledge you will be picking up!!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Good for you!
My3LilMonkeys replied: My guesses without peeking below:
Otorhinolaryngologist - an ENT? Oto - ear, rhino - nose, laryn - throat
Polyenterocarcinoma - something with lots of cancer? poly - multiple, carcin - cancer
ETA: Woohoo! Not bad.
C&K*s Mommie replied: Best of wishes with it all! You can do it.
Once you learn the meanings of the root words, everything else will be a piece of cake. Good luck!
Boo&BugsMom replied: Oh good, because I use the term "thingy" a lot.
A&A'smommy replied: wow, I totally didn't actually pay attention to the words but good for you, its always feels good to learn something new!!!
