Military wives question - about housing
mckayleesmom wrote: Those that are military families here...Do you live on post or off? We live off and have only ever lived on post 1 time a couple years back at fort Knox. We do have 2 military posts here within distance....Cherry Point and Camp Leguen (sp?). We chose to live off post because we like it better and because neither of those posts are my husbands military branch....although we could live there technically.
Also....for those that live off post. Do you usually find housing within your bah range?
We usually try to find housing that is a few hundred dollars below our bah level, so we can pay all our utility bills within the bah range. Usually we do pretty good doing that....maybe a little out of pocket. When we were in Jackson Alabama..the bah range hasn't been updated in years and we couldn't make ends meet at all there. We took a huge financial hit there.
Calimama replied: We live on base because he deploys a lot so we both feel safer. Plus the houses are amazing and have a view of the ocean. Can't beat that.
Forgot to say we are looking at moving off though. We live too far from where DH works and I'm starting to feel smothered by the Marine Corps and their rules.
mckayleesmom replied: Very True.....I did like not paying for utilities on post. Although they are now starting it on some posts.
Calimama replied: Yeah probably in the next few years we all will.
Calimama replied: Forgot to say DH is looking a Lejuene for our next duty station!! I want VA though or to stay here. As long as it's not Japan I'll be happy.
mckayleesmom replied: Its pretty nice here and not to far from the ocean. Its quiet, but a pretty place to live.
luvmykids replied: They ARE awesome.........I don't know which part you live on but the last time we were in SD I ended up on base somehow ....I had no clue until someone flagged me down because the houses were so nice
Calimama replied: Yep. Most people can't believe they are on base.
lovemy2 replied: Where is that??? Never heard of it...
Calimama replied: North Carolina.
paradisemommy replied: we lived on and off base - living on base is nice because you don't have to pay utilities, for me, i felt a lot safer and you have everything you could possibly want (the bases here are like their own city - bowling, movies, gas, commisary, tons of parks, beach, you name it they've got it) but the down side is that everyone is in everyone elses business - you get to see who's sleeping with who while their husband is off deployed and there is far too much drama for me..i always called our housing area the big fishbowl - NO PRIVACY (and i kept to myself and didn't socialize with any of them)
PrairieMom replied: Why the ? I Love NC. Although, we drove through some really questionable places. My SIL is at Bragg. I would LOVE to live closer to the beach.
Calimama replied: I'm having, "Leaving California" issues. I'm realllllllly hoping we get to just stay here. DH is trying to convince me to see the world.. IE somewhere that DOESN'T have a beach.
lovemy2 replied: I know its not CA but you would be on MY coast - would that help
Calimama replied: Yes!!
mckayleesmom replied: well...I was born and raised in California and my family still lives there...I would never want to live there again though.
Calimama replied: Really? Why not?
mckayleesmom replied: Too many people....too much smog...
lovemy2 replied: We could even DRIVE to visit you then -
Calimama replied: That makes NC look wonderful!!
luvmykids replied: I'd be in that region by then too
Calimama replied: Oh yeah I had forgotten about that!!
lovemy2 replied: See you would already have friends - it wouldn't even be like moving
luvmykids replied: Especially if I can some how swing this GA thing into a NY thing After the stories I told you I'm looking for a way to spin this thing in my favor
Calimama replied: I hear NC is nice. Don't quote me though..
Swood75 replied: Or we could MAYBE even visit some..I live in Upstate South Carolina..I am about 4 1/2-5 hrs from Myrtle Beach (I love it there)...
