Milk - Whole vs. 2%

moped wrote: Can anybody tell me why we give babies after 1 whole milk? Is it for hte fat? And at what point would you give them 2%.................I am not sure that Jack needs extra fat if that is the reason.

ediep replied: the fat is for brain development, he needs it until age 2. At 2, your ped will reccommend you to switch to 2%, 1%, or even skim. I gave Jay whole milk until recentely, now we use 2%.

moped replied: Perfect.............now that i know it is for brain development I will continue....I just thought it was for the extra fat.

Thanks!

~KARA~ replied: My pedi always said 2%.

mummy2girls replied: homo gave jenna bad constipationb so he recommended 2%. As long as she was getting the extra calcium other places she will be fine! i guess it just depends on what the parents perferrs. wink.gif

Jamielou replied: I was told whole milk for brain development also... tongue.gif

JAYMESMOM replied: My pediatrician's office said 2% or whole milk that it really isn't that much of a difference as long as they are getting calcium from another source besides milk. They also said it wouldn't hurt her if she had skin or 1% every once in a while.

I use what is on sale. That way she adjusts to drinking all forms. My DH only drinks whole. She eats so much cheese she should be constipated constantly but isn't.

Sunflower04 replied: I actually have my DS on skim. He was on the soy for a while since he had a slight allergy to milk but our Ped said skim was ok.

3_call_me_mama replied: The whole milk is for the fat needed for brain development, not for calcium purposes. We used whole, per peditrician adn WIC and only recently switched to 2% for Cameron. Dennis and I drink skim and kathleen will be one whole.. so 3 different types of milk soon:)

jacobsmama replied: My ped said either as well b/c my son was in the upper percentile for ht and wt he said he would also do fine with 2% milk and that he didn't need all the extra calories that come along with whole milk. Once I switched him he ate more food and drank less milk. He drinks pleanty just not as much as he was before. Good luck.

My2Beauties replied: I was giving Hanna 2% at first because she was high on the weight and height scales (percentile wise), I thought whole milk would contain too much fat, but boy did I hear a mouthful from my ped. He said any baby should be on whole milk because of the fatty content, the much needed calcium, etc.... So I did what I was told blush.gif

Josie83 replied: Cassie's still on full fat! i don't know what all this chat about 2% and all of it is, over here we have full fat, semi-skimmed and kimmed. I was always told to keep her on full-fat until she's five! ohmy.gif Maybe that's because she's still quite little, but my nieces all drank it until they were five as well. They give free full fat milk to child in schools up till the age of five because they think its so important! So I think its probably a good thing for Jack to be getting it! wink.gif laugh.gif xx
