More computer problems

Our Lil' Family wrote: growl.gif
Once again it seems I have a bug! My browsers will not load any webpage! I know my connection is fine, it's just my browsers that are messed up. I have a feeling it's due to myspace...I really do. Not until I started using myspace did I have this much problems. I am tempted to delete my page and just forget about it...it's not worth it.

I'm at my neighbors house now, thankfully she and I are good friends and she doesn't mind me using her computer like 3 times a day. I do some internet based business and I can't not have internet access...so this has to get fixed QUICK!

That's where I am if I go missing!!! wink.gif

ataylorm replied: Have you tried running Microsoft Windows Defender? It's currently free on their site, and can get rid of a LOT of the pesky spyware installs.

Also if you open your I.E. and go to Tools - Options - Delete Files - All Offline Content that may help.

If not let me know and I can give you some more steps.

holley79 replied: hug.gif I'm sorry you are having problems. That makes things so tough.

CantWait replied:
Hope this works for you. I'm having one of the same problems out of a few, and it's not helping at all.

Hope you get your pc fixed fast. hug.gif

ataylorm replied: CantWait,

If you tell me what your experiencing, I may be able to help you. It's what I do for a living. smile.gif

CantWait replied:
HMMMMMM lets see, where do I start???

1. I can only open 1 internet browser, if I try to open more then the computer freezes.

2. When I click on links, like the ones posted in the threads here, the SHOW ALL emoticon button, it freezes.

3. When I do a google search or any search in general, I click on the link the search provided (you should know what's coming here), that's right, it freezes.

That's all i can remember right now....I know there's more, but I've virtually given up on trying to go to websites I frequent because of problems.

I've tried running Windows Defender, done AdAware, and a Virus scan. I've cleared all files, including all offline ones.

Any help would be appreciated.

ataylorm replied: Can't Wait,

Lets start off with a few diagnostic questions, so I don't have you doing a lot of unneeded steps.

1. Open the "My Computer" icon, how much free space does your C Drive have?

2. Please CTRL-ALT-DEL and select task manager, on the processes tab, how many are running?

3. On the performance tab, what is the total physical memory and available memory?

4. On the bottom right of your screen, near the click, how many icons do you have for programs?

5. In Internet Explorer, go to help, about, what version are you running specifically? Something like 6.0.1928.2838

6. Besides for the menu bar which has "file, edit, view, etc." and the navigation bar, and address bar. Do you have any additional toolbars running at the top of your IE? Google Toolbar, Yahoo Toolbar, etc?

Maddie&EthansMom replied:

Yes, but I'm not sure if it's yahoo or what it is. wink.gif

ETA: I'm going to buy some of those little jump drives (or whatever they're called) to transfer my pics. Would you suggest this?

CantWait replied:
I have 15.2 GB of free space.

Usually there are only 2 programs running now due to the fact that I can't run very much.

The physical memory is 1048044
The Actual " " 230144

We have 9 icons on the bottom right.

I'm running 6.0

No other additional toolbars. We use to have a Google toolbar but uninstalled this when we started having problems to try and eliviate anything we didn't actually need.

Also forgot to mention that we did a scan disc.
We have an external harddrive so a lot of the pictures can be transfered there if need be.

luvmykids replied: Naomi, I started messing around with myspace and have problems too. I've had them for a while but now it's worse, Norton found a "Movieland" virus but I can't get rid of it. Hope you get it fixed growl.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: God gave me an angel today....the lady at Cox (my ISP). I just knew it wasn't my service but like DH suggested I called them (I am learning something from my book, sometimes he does know something). She did some things, I rebooted and so far so good, it's working!!!

I'm still leary about myspace though.

ataylorm replied: Ok,

Lets see what we can get fixed here. I will address each of your computers seperately.

CANTWAIT:

Looks like you have plenty of free drive space, you may only see 2 programs running, but you will actually have dozens if not a hundred or more running. On the "PROCESSES" tab, at the bottom, it will tell you the number of processes running and the percent of your CPU's ability being used. Lets check that if we can.

I want you to try right clicking on each of the icons on the bottom and close/exit as many as you can.

Are you running Norton System Works or Norton Utilities? These have a real problem of creating this type of issue. If you are we may want to shut them down temporarily to see if that is the source of the issue. Let me know, I can walk you through completely shutting them down.

One other thing to check, go to your IE, Tools, Options, Advanced, scroll down a little bit and you will see an option that says "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions", lets make sure this is unchecked. If you had to uncheck it, close IE, reboot, and try IE again.

Maddie&EthansMom

Looks like your probably running on an older computer based on your drive size and the amount of RAM you have. I would like you to try the above steps as well, your computer is going to be prone to slow down with extra processes running, especially if you have a Celeron or AMD processor.

Luvmykids

I would recommend you check out Mcafee.com, their virus scan is generally better at removing the tough viruses, and it has a lot less overhead on your system than the Norton tools.

CantWait replied:
I have 51 processes running, and the CPU percentage keeps changing between 2-4%.

Closed everything about half of what's on there.

I have Norton Anti Virus, I don't know if that's any different from System Works or Utilities, if so then I don't have them.

Done the other thing also.

Glad he got you fixed up.

ataylorm replied: Glad to get you fixed CantWait...

Sounds like you have some "EXTRAS" install that you probably don't want. You might want to go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, and get rid of anything you didn't know you had or want. However I don't recommend you do that unless you are fairly comfortable adding and removing stuff.

Also you might want to run a chkdsk and a defrag.

To run a check disk, click the start button, then select RUN, enter CMD in the prompt and press enter. This will provide you a black window with white text, here you should type CHKDSK /F and press enter. It's probably going to tell you that it can't run it until you reboot, go ahead and tell it you want it to run at the next reboot. Then reboot, it will take a few minutes to run, but will check your files for corruption.

Then once that is done, before you head to bed, go to START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - SYSTEM TOOLS - DISK DEFRAGMENTER

Here you want to select your C drive, and click DEFRAG. This will most likely take a few hours to run, but can really help system performance, especially if you haven't run it in a long time.

CantWait replied: We did a defrag probably about a week ago. As for the add/remove programs, I'm quite comfortable doing it, however there are some on there that I don't know what they do, therefore I don't want to uninstall it if it's important to the computers performance.

Ummm I don't think I want to know. tongue.gif

luvmykids replied: Ok, I'm going to jump in too, when I checked the processes I have 52 running, is that normal or too many? Also, my memory (total is 392684, available is 145184) looks ok. CPU is between 2-4.

I tried going to delete my online content and can't find it, I don't see a "tools" menu.

CantWait replied:
Tools menu is right on your internet browers at the top.

Click on that, then Internet Options, can delete files, a window will come up, there's an option there to delete offline files.

ataylorm replied: CantWait,

If you want to give me a list of the ones you aren't sure about, then I can give you a pretty good idea what they are and if you want/need them.

The ones you absolutely do not want to un-install are the ones that say Security fix or Hot fix. smile.gif

But it sounds like you probably have some adware and stuff loaded somewhere.

ataylorm replied: Luvmykids,

52 processes isn't to bad, generally anything over 60 or so is something to look at, and you have some free memory which is good. I would check out the offline content, and make sure you have disabled third party plugins for IE, they tend to be the worst offenders.

If you can tell me a little more about what your symptoms are, I can give you more specific diagnostics.

ataylorm replied: Maybe you gals can help me out a little. I am preparing a free newsletter/pamplet type thing for people looking at technology for Christmas and stuff. What kind of topics might you have questions about when it comes to buying tech for the home? Computers, TV's, DVD Players, etc.

Right now I have an article on what kind of computer do you need, and one on understanding HDTV. What kind of questions/articles would you be interested in reading about before you do your shopping.

CantWait replied:
I'll think on this one, as nothing really comes to mind besides, ease of use, and what would I be able to do with it.
