Mommieto2Girls replied: Madison is #2 for top baby names in 2002. That's not a good thing, when she goes to school there will be alot of Madison's. ohmy.gif

victoire2002 replied: It's hard to gauge how common or uncommon your child's name on these, because statistically they are taking adults of all ages into account. For instance, when I looked up Gladys (a very common name amongst some of my mother's friends), it came up in the 300's, as did Mabel, Jeanette, and others. That's because there are still women alive who were born in the 30's. These statistics do not accurately reflect how many Aidans, Marys, or Johns will be in your child's class in school. If you go to the social security administration website, you can get a good idea of how many kids will be named the same thing as your child.

I wasn't really taking it all that seriously, I was just board and it was fun. I don't think alot of it is accurate as well cause they don't take into consideration the different ways to spell the names either. I was supprised that they even had something for Mckaylees name at all, usually it will say,,,sorry that name isn't in our files...bla bla bla. Even thought what they were really saying was that it was just a nice way of saying they never heard of it..lol

Schnoogly replied: There are also lists of names of babies born in a certain year on the social security website--I think the top 1000 are listed. This is a better indicator of how many Madisons (for example) there might be in your child's class. But it varies region to region--in some states Ethan was the most popular boy's name and in other states it was Jacob. Lots of baby naming sites have the top 10 names.

By the way, this site didn't even give me statistics for Iain. Just said it was a very rare name--apparently not even enough to count!

But Stephanie is the 41st most common girls name. Duh, I knew that! There are a zillion Stephanies. At least I don't spell it stefany though.

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
tells you the most popular names in each year--this way you can see how many Ethels were born in 1902.

When we named dd #1 Madeline we thought it was pretty unique-turns out everyone thought that! Every time we go anywhere there is a Maddie (Madeline or Madison). Dh is sooo frusterated! We both have common names for our age group (Jason and Jennifer) and he really wanted to avoid that for our kids. I don't care though-I love the name Madeline. happy.gif
