Need some help getting Brae to - eat his rice cereal.
MoonMama wrote: Brae's ped said to start him on rice cereal when he turned 4 months old. So we have been trying sense then to get him to eat it to no avail. Its been almost 3 weeks and he still gets that yuckie face and spits most of it out. What do I to get him to take it? I was thinking of making a larger hole in the nipple of a bottle and seeing if he will take it this way until he is used to it. But I just don't know what to do for sure. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
Crystalina replied: I always added a little bit of apple juice to flavor it up. I always tasted whatever I had my kids eat and that cereal is so bland. Try some flavoring. Just a bit.
MoonMama replied: I tried flavoring it with a little Gerber applesauce, but I'll try apple juice. Thanks.
Swood75 replied: I always gave it to my kids on a baby spoon..But mixed a tiny bit of sugar and a little bit of bananas (baby food) and mine loved it..I started giving them baby food/cereal at about 3-4 months old too..
Brias3 replied: Have you tried thinning it out more? I literally had to make it pure liquid for Ry when he first started on it, although it was difficult to serve off a spoon Even though its supposed to be very thin to start with, I think something about the consistency just bothered him. In addition, I had to flavor as well.
Danalana replied: I'm no mother, but I think you need to explain to him that it's good for him and that this is a step toward eating solid food.
Hehe, I don't know.
Calimama replied: My ped told us if Bella didn't take it, it was a sign she wasn't ready. Personally I think it just tasted too bland for her, so I added sweet potatoes and she was more impressed. She still doesn't have much cereal, she's more a veggie kind of girl.
CantWait replied: 4 months is still rather young. There's no need to rush it, but if you really want to, you can add some baby apple juice (if it's already been introduced), more formula to thin it out (if that's not what you're already using), or water if that's not what you're using already.
I really caution against the sugar since he's so young and you don't want to get him use to that flavour yet, especially since he doesn't NEED the cereal yet.
MoonMama replied: Thanks everyone I really appreciate the help. He has an appointment with his ped for his 4 month check up/shots so I'll talk to her more about it then and keep you all posted.
Boo&BugsMom replied: We started Tanner on cereal and fruits/veggies when he was 3 months. He liked it thick and he always liked it better when it was mixed with a fruit or veggie, never plain. Perhaps you just need to find his preferences. Just thought I'd add.
MoonMama replied: Thanks Jennie, I'll give it a try.
ediep replied: he might just not be ready. Emma is 3 months now and she is nowhere near being ready for cereal. I'm going to wait until she is 6 months or so. No rush, if he isn't into it, just wait a bit and try again in a few weeks.
Don't put it in his bottle, Jasons ped always says that isn;t good for the baby's tummy.
Cece00 replied: Sounds like he is not ready.
Honestly, I'd wait another couple of months. It recommended to wait now, even though peds say its OK to give cereal @ 4 months. My ped has told me its fine to wait. My youngest son is 6 months and hasnt even had rice cereal, I decided to wait til he shows interest. He has started to show some so I will start soon. My daughter was 5 months when I tried cereal with her & she couldve cared less...so we waited about another month before trying it again and she was interested that time.
So honestly, I'd wait. He doesnt need it for nutrition, so why push him if he isnt ready, KWIM?
MoonMama replied: Thanks everyone, after trying again tonight I think I am going to wait like said till he's a little older. Thanks again.
