New Nephew is here! - !!!!!!!!!!medical questions

grapfruit wrote: Ok, my newest nephew came last night via emergency c-section at around 6pm. I haven't had a chance to see him yet, I'm planning on that today.baby.gif

News last night was that all is well happy.gif but they wanted to keep him in the nursery for observation since his heart rate had been irregular (hence the emergency c-section). Suppose to return him in 5 hours.

This morning mom calls me (my future SIL) and says that if Cyndi wants to see him she can't bring the kids b/c he's still in the nursery. I asked her if he'd been in there all night or had he come to her room. She said he'd been in there all night, which I said was sad.

Finally I asked her, "Are you sure he's in the nursery or is he in the NICU?" She didn't know what a NICU was, she said, "He's in a special nursery, so I guess yes, it's that one".

Here's why:

Irregular heart beat
when they got him out the doctors think he had a seizure
he has no skin on the back of his head bawling.gif

What do you think guys????? My heart says if it was really serious they'd of sent him to Children's by now...but Cyndi said "what if they have to wait until he's stable". I'm going to call her back and ask better questions, I had no idea what to ask when she called this morning. It was strange that she got me at all. Typically I would of all ready been in the shower...

amynicole21 replied: First off, congrats on your new nephew!

I had a co-worker who's granddaughter was born with the skin rubbed off on one of her arms and legs. This was due to low amniotic fluid or something, and she was rubbing against the uterine wall. She healed over time, and I'm not sure but I don't think there are any long-lasting problems. If there was an amniotic fluid issue, it may have been causing stress and the heart problems as well.

I hope all is well with baby and mom. Please keep us posted. hug.gif

grapfruit replied: Ok, a couple updates:

it was 5pm on the dot that he was born

the area w/no skin on the back of his head is about 2-3 inches (I'm not sure the exact location) Apparently there's a membrane covering the area dunno.gif The skin apparently never grew. We don't know if there is "skull" under this membrane or not...

What can cause this?

He is also on O2 right now, b/c he is having trouble keeping his levels up and he's also not eating very well. However Scott said his O2 seemed to be coming up.

More updates when they come...

grapfruit replied: Another update:

Our MIL is on her way, so now there will be an adult to better understand and relay the information. I think part of the problem we're having is communication. Kelly isn't one to question the doctors, and doesn't grasp medical concepts too well. So hopefully we'll have the full story very soon.

In the mean time, Cyndi's DH called his brother (the dad) and got a little better information. (Makes things look a LOT better) *shew*

First, he's in a Stage 2 or Second Level (?) nursery, NOT the NICU. Basically, this is one where there are nurses 24/7 to montitor him. He's breathing ok and on his own now, I think he may of taken a bottle too.

They're still not sure if it was a seizure or not, he did stiff up and shake a bit when they took him. So they're thinking probably. Hope to know more on this later when our MIL gets there.

What it seems is that the skull is ok and intact, the skin just didn't grow there, they said that the membrane covering the skull is thin and you can see his skull underneath it.

They're hoping to let him stay in his room tonight. *crosses fingers*

Thank you for your P&PTs!!! love2.gif

I'll try and get pictures ASAP, from what Kelly says he looks just like his dad wub.gif

Calimama replied: Congratulations!! hug.gif hug.gif T&P's for him.

momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied: Ok, here is the update from my MIL.

The hole is NOT 2-3" it is very small (sounds like the size of a dime or a nickle) and looks more like a birthmark (because it is real red) than anything else. There was a conference call done with Children's Hospital and they said that was in the range of "normal" and there aren't any concerns. The plastic surgeon has to look at to see if there are any hair folicles (sp) or if it may be a bald spot.

They are going to have to do an MRI to make sure he doesn't have any other problems, because the seizure like thing he did is not normal. So they have to investigate the cause. He is sleepy, but he has been through a lot the last 20 hours.

He is now in the room with mom without any oxygen. He is not interested at all in nursing, so they are trying to get him to eat any amount from a bottle.

Mom is already up and moving around and in hardly any pain from the c-section. She is doing great.

So it sounds like he is going to be ok Thank God!!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I am so excited to be an aunt again. Now I have two nephews.

avory&samsmom replied: I'm here now you two and we're all pulling for Isaiah!

indywndy_04 replied: Jake has the same thing on his head from birth. It is about a dime size area on the back side of his head that is bald and was really red at birth, but now is tanish, skin color. I took him to a dermatologist and they said it is something that babies can get and it is a mixture of the mothers hormones and skin oils that cause it, they said it is a type of skin cancer, but not bad cancer or anything. It will have to be removed when he is 2 so that he can handle the procedure being under. (although he has already had emergency surgery at 3 weeks old, they dont want to put a baby under if it isnt an emergency to do so)

Congrats on the baby! Can't wait to see the pics!

3xsthefun replied: I hope everything turns out to be ok with your nephew. hug.gif

grapfruit replied:
Wendy, that makes things sound a lot better! Thanks for that. Sometimes Kelly doesn't get the entire story so we are left guessing. Although finding out Children's said it was normal made us calm down a ton! happy.gif

grapfruit replied: Here's a picture! smile.gif I have a couple more (one w/me) but they're on my other camera.

Enjoy!

Oh; and the "spot" on his head is strange. To me it looks like he fell and scrapped it. A scab was already forming over it. It's not like a "hole" there's just no skin. Strange...

Calimama replied:
I love newborns!! He's so cute! wub.gif Almost makes me want another one.. ALMOST. emlaugh.gif

grapfruit replied: Denise, It's funny you say that! Scott (the dad) was dead set that this would be their one and only. Well after Isaiah was born, he told Kelly he was ok trying for a girl. tongue.gif

Calimama replied:
Sounds like my DH. He tells me he doesn't care about the sex of the baby as long as we can have another one. Yeah I'll get right on that. rolleyes.gif emlaugh.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: That all sounds scary, but I'm sure he will pull through in no time. You all are in my p&pts. hug.gif He is beautiful! Congrats

My3LilMonkeys replied: Glad to hear what he has isn't serious. He is adorable!!! wub.gif Congrats!
