Nick knacks vs. Photos
mysweetpeasWil&Wes wrote: DH and I had a mini argument last night about memorabilia. He was cleaning out his home office (finally!) and rummaging through all his nick knacks. I was standing behind him with a trash can in hand saying "jus get rid of it!" or give it to good will. But he loves all his "dust collectors"! I can't stand small nick knacks that sit around, have no design sense to my home because they're usually wooden figurines or chinese stones, and just collect dust. DH on the other hand has a story for every one, which I suppose is nice, but sometimes I think he just makes up a story so that I don't throw it away! Well I am more of a photo person. I hold my memories in photos, in which DH is totally against. He can't stand when I hang photos on the walls or plaster them all over the fridge. He didn't even want photos for our wedding! His excuse was "the memory is in my mind, why does it have to be on paper?" He sees no value in a photo, but he holds onto souvenir crap like it's his pride and joy! So I've compromised and let him have the office as his crap collector room, but guess who's the one who has to clean it!? It takes forever to dust ALL those little guys...
Anyhow, just curious, if you could only choose one, would you pick nick knacks or photos when it comes to holding onto memories??
A picture to me says a thousand words...a nick knack is just junk! JMO.

My DH is in to not holding on to either knick knacs or photos.
Things really were put into perspective for me after my aunt died. Since you know she took her own life and obviously was very unexpected it left a lot of feelings behind. The day after her death we all gathered at her house (after the cops let us finally go in ). I didn't want to be there but was and strolled around the house quickly then went back outside. BUT what I noticed during my quick stroll was all the photos she had all over the house. They weren't just recent photos but they were old ones as well. Her house told me a story of love, life and laughter because of all those old photos. It made me realize two things about my own house. 1 - I tend to change out photos often. Like I have a wall of photos and they are all of the girls. I change them out each time I get their pics taken which is about every 3 months. I have a few photo collages which have new/old photos but that's about it. All the other photos I have around are of family members and I change them out when they give me new ones. I learned that if I change them out all the time my house will never *tell this story* like my aunts did. Hard to explain, DH thinks I'm cuckoo.
And 2 - I was always worried about cluttering my walls with photos. I already have enough artwork on my walls so I hate to have photos all over them too. Then I decided along with my aunts situation that I want to plaster my house with photos. Not in a trashy way but in a nice design way. We have a hallway that is basically blank and I'm going to fill them with photos of family, friends, etc.
Yeah, I'm just rambling, sorry. Short story - photos definitely!
coasterqueen replied: THat's hilarious Mel!!! I love siblings!
punkeemunkee'smom replied: It is a bit embarrassing but I am referred to as a photo-holic by all my friends! I had Tay's picture done about every 2 weeks for the first 3 years and have them done now about every 6 weeks! It is just something to do. Some of the photographers have become friends! So I would have to say photos for sure~
mammag replied: None of the above. Not that I don't like them just never seem to get around to framing them and putting them up and I don't really like knick knacks so much. I hate it though because if you came into my house you would not get a good idea of who my family is. I do have a few pics of the kids on the table in the living room but that's it. I spent a couple of hundred dollars on a family portrait package once and never got the frames and hung them and now we have Keegan so I hate to hang a picture without him in it......so what the heck do I do with that big old 11x14 picture???
I do scrapbook so it's not that I don't care about pictures.....
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I'm going to show this to DH!! This is exactly what I'm saying. I don't like clutter, but I still haven't had any professional pictures of Wil taken yet because DH thinks it's a waste of money! We don't live close to family, so I want pictures everywhere so my son knows who his family is! DH looks at me and says "you're not going to do the hall of fame are you?" I don't get it! Next time he buys his dust collector, I'm going to say "you're not going to open up a souvenir tourist shop are you?"
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I like both but if I could only have one I'd choose photos. Mostly because the most special memories I have are with friends and family so seeing them in a picture is the best way to remember. But I do have a box of random little things that I've collected over the years that would look like a bunch of junk to anybody else but holds significance to me because of the memories attached to them.
I know I know...
coasterqueen replied: ROFL Rae, you are so funny! I'd definitely say that to him!
BTW, Kylie LOVES LOVES to look at the family photos I have out and she always goes around and names them off. This really helped her when she was littler and wasn't sure who everyone is. Now she mainly looks at the ones who live far away, like her favorite cousin, so she doesn't miss them as much.
