OH HELP..... - Chicken Pox

lovemy2 wrote: OK - so Olivia - who just turned 5 had the chicken pox vaccine when she was 1 - on Friday she was with my mom at her friend's house and her friend's 18 year old son found out the next day he has Chicken Pox ohmy.gif So sicne Olivia was playing with this kid - and his sisters - what are the odds? Ped says pretty good - but would be a mild case - so great poor Olivia stinks no matter what but at least a mild case and then there's LITTLE DYLAN - no vaccine - sissy gets it - I'm thinking the odds are pretty good he gets it and it isn't mild.....................lovely..............and the kicker - 2-3 weeks for them to show up right when we go on vacation for the week - the nurse at the Peds office said bring motrin, tylenol and calamine lotion wacko.gif

So anyone else's kids get chicken pox after having the first vaccination??????

UGH wacko.gif blink.gif unsure.gif ohmy.gif sad.gif

Farelle replied: Hmm.....I remember having chicken pox when I was little and I'm sure we were vaccinated (right....they did do that in the 70's?) Anyway, I remember it wasn't that bad...and I always hear the same thing, that it should be a milder case. Too bad you'll be on vacation though..........MAYBE you'll get lucky and your kids just won't get it!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!!!!

luvbug00 replied: Oh dear, I hope she doesn't get them! but if she does..........

Horrible question here...but if she did get them can i send Mya over?? I'm sooo ready for her to have them and get them over with..

gr33n3y3z replied:
ummm not that I know of I had Chicken pox 3 times or was it 4 but the last time I got them so bad as an adult of 23 my head was killing me and very high fevers and swollen glads in the head neck and throat and pits

Kaitlin'smom replied: Kaitlin has had the Vac and been exposed 3-4 times and has NEVER gotten them. So maybe you will get lucky

hoosier momma replied: My son was also exposed after he was vaccinated and never got them.

PrairieMom replied:
I think the vaccine is fairly new. Like maybe in the past 10 years. I am 30 and I was never vaccinated for CP. I got them the old fashioned way, my mom took me over to the neighbor's house and exposed me. rolleyes.gif She said it was a good time for her to take off work with an ill child. dry.gif

hawkshoe replied: My oldest got the vaccine and later got the chicken pox. The outbreak was mild (maybe 20 or so spots) and he didn't feel bad or itchy, but he did miss several days of school.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Heh heh!

I'm 25, and my mom did the same thing. Although I can't remembr for sure if it was cp or the measles. I've had one, not the other.

My3LilMonkeys replied:
I'm 24 and was never vaccinated for them - my mom did all the other shots so I'm guessing it wasn't available when I was a kid....my sisters and I all had it at the same time.

ZandersMama replied: Oh I hope she doesnt get them hug.gif

grapfruit replied: I'm 23 and was never vac for them. I did get them twice really bad and then the shingles when I was in 1st grade. My mom took lots of pictures of me looking pitiful and spotty. rolleyes.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: I had a really mild case as an infant and then again at 16 really bad and almost needed hosp..
but the vaccine is fairly new and most adults didnt get it.

so far caleb hasnt gotten them, but i am not sure he has been exposed either.
now they are suggesting a second booster for the cp vaccine around school age.

momtoMegan&Alyxandria replied: Meg was vaccinated before she turned 1. When she was 4 she got the chicken pox, but had a very mild case. She had less than 100 bumps (prabably even fewer than I can remember) and didn't feel bad at all. It was horrible because she kept wanting to go outside and play and didn't understand that she was sick. She didn't even run a low grade fever.
So hopefully if she does get them it will be mild.

I did find something out last Wed when I had Meg in for a physical. Her doctor (new doctor) saw that she had been vaccinated and she started telling me how they have found the the first vaccine wasn't as strong as it could have been and they are seeing it wear off faster than other vaccines and that they now have a follow-up chicken pox vaccine. When I told her that she had already had Chicken pox she said that she wouldn't need it.

Boo&BugsMom replied: The CP vaccine is pretty new. Nobody my age, I'm 30, got it when I was young. It wasn't around then.

I'm sure both kids will be fine. To be honest, we will probably skip all CP vaccines that are left for Tanner and ones for Aiden. I remember a time when parents would expose their children on purpose to get it over with so they didn't end up getting it as an adult, lie Tara mentioned. That's how I got it. Nobody I know died or got it so severe they had to be hospitalized, so I'm not worried. I think there are far worse diseases to be afraid of. I know how scary it can be though. I don't even like it when one of the kids gets a cold, much less CP, esp when they are babies because they don't understand why they feel that way. Hang in there! They both might not even get it. hug.gif

Calimama replied: I hope she doesn't get them!!

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: hug.gif

Hope everything turns out ok.
