OH NO! - Chicken Pox
KingMom wrote: My sitter just caused and said her daughter is showing signs of chicken pox and that I should possibly call my doctor about coming whether or not I should pick him up.
What do you think I should do, my doctor's office is closed until 2 (only 5 more minutes)?
MissyKay2005 replied: Not sure I am understanding your question...are you asking if you should go get your son from where he is or what are you asking?
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Call the doctor, most kids have been vaccinated in our area by like 5 years, but be prepared to go get him maybe.
KingMom replied: Nevermind! I just called my doctor and they said he has already been exposed so no point unless the sitter's daughter is uncomfortable (which she isn't). She said since Colin still gets breastmilk and I have had Chicken Pox that his is getting antibodies and IF he got it that it would be a very mild case.
Just an FYI to all in case you are ever in the same situation.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: If she has the bumps starting then really it is too late-he is already exposed and since they are contagious the day before the rash he may already get it! They used to say under 1 they would not contract it but that is not always true-my brother got it at 9 months! Stock up on benadryl and tylenol-the incubation period is 2 weeks so you may have some time before he gets the rash! I hope not-poor sweetie!
jcc64 replied: My kids have been vaccinated, so I don't have much info to offer. But chix pox is a virus, and I don't think drs can do much about that.
luvbug00 replied: Tell your sitter Mya will be right there. we didn't do the vax and I want her to get it over with already. Here in my area they have playgroups so kids will catch it and get it done with!!
KingMom replied: Yeah, a few of my co workers said that it may be good that he gets it now (may be milder from the antibodies in the breastmilk) and he may never get it again. Even better, he won't ever remember. We will have to wait and see if he gets it, the doc said it could take 2-3 weeks if he does get it.
booey2 replied: Here is hoping he doesn't get it and if he does it is mild. Both my boys were exposed a few times before they got them last year at Christmas. Thomas was just 3 and his was milder than Matthew's who was 6 1/2.
moped replied: That is what I was going to say - please let us know what happens
3_call_me_mama replied: This is not necessarily true. I had the chicken pox when I was younger, and Kathleen was only 6 mos old and still breast feeding when she got them. She got the AWFUL. She was absolutely miserable and had new spot appearing for 2 weeks, I was home almost 3 full weeks with her because of them. Our ped said it was the worst case he had seen on anyone since the 70's and the worst case he had EVER seen on ababy. (He's been practicing since the early 70's. ) SHe ended up on an antibiotic for a secondary skin infection she got from it, and we had to put burn cream on her (like for burn victims in the hospital) so that they would heal quicker and homefully not scar. She was unrecognizable it was awful.
Hopefully Colin gets a mild case and never gets them again, but you won't know for 7-21 days from when he was first exposed wether he has them or not. Lots of non itch vibes to you. (oat meal baths work wonders:))
KingMom replied: That's so scary! Now I'll worry a bit more for the next 3 weeks.
luvbug00 replied: Hey at least he won't have it with poison ivy like me!! Huge pussy blisters and oatmeal and aveno baths every 4 hours even at night. Now that was pure
mckayleesmom replied: I had them twice...once when I was 2 and another time when I was about 7......I remember when all the neigborhood moms would bring all the kids over to the kid who had the chicken pox to expose them and get it over with.
kimberley replied: the boys were not vaccinated and got CP at daycare at 3yo and 18mos. James was a bit worse than Jacob but really, the worst was over in a week with no major problems. both were bf for 13mos.
the CP virus is the most contagious BEFORE the spots come, so your child is already exposed. we do chicken pox parties here too. better now when they are young. the older they get the more they scratch.
