OMG. Now what do I do
lisar wrote: Me and dh filled our income taxes seperate last year. Well he got his stimulus payment and I never got mine so I callled them and asked them about a few minutes ago. Well they decide to inform me that they never got my return. I owed money so I never thought about it. Anyways, I owed them $180.00 and now that they didnt get the return I have to pay late fees and interest on the money that I owed and its right around two thousand dollars now. what am I supposed to do. I am so upset. If it aint one thing then its another. I asked the lady if I could fight it and she said unless I had proof no I couldnt. So then I told her that its not my fault they wont let me mail it to them certified. All she could say was sorry.
I HATE THE IRS ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY
Kaitlin'smom replied: So you never sent them the 180?
I hate taxes
mckayleesmom replied: Are you kidding me?
Did you do your taxes yourself or at a tax place?
mammag replied: So are they going to apply the stimulus check to what you owe?
This is why I do electronic filing. You have proof, it's free, and way easier. So when you filed did you send a check with it? Did it clear? That would be proof. Did you file for an extension?
Sorry this is happening.
DVFlyer replied: I think you can negotiate a settlement with them. Perhaps you can get them to accept the $180 and your stimulus check as payment in full?
msoulz replied: I have had a few dealings with the IRS and found them to be reasonable despite the person on the phone. ITA with DVFlyer. Gather what you have - do you have a cancelled check or were they to pull it from your bank account? Regardless, get whatever you have. Then write a letter or call and tell them you have filed faithfully in the past and don't know why they did not get this as you sent it in a timely manner, and ask for them to remove the fines and then negotiate the interest. But do it SOON as your interest keeps building.
DVFlyer replied: Quick Google search that might have some good info:

lisar replied: here is my problem:
1. I didnt send a check with it because I knew about the stimulus check and that would cover it. 2. I did have Jackson Hewitt do it, but I mailed it in myself cause it was cheaper and I owed. 3. I have NO PROOF 4. The company I work has been dealing with the IRS and the ones here locally are NOT NEGOTIABLE if you own land, a house, or anything. They look at like you could sell that and pay them. Because of work I have 2 tax attorneys and they both have said I am screwed that I will have to pay it. I am so mad about this. I dont have that kind of money. And now me and dh are going to have to file seperately again this year because of it.
lisar replied: this one doesnt apply to me because I own alot of things that are traceable.
Currently Not Collectible Currently Not Collectible means that a taxpayer has no ability to pay his or her tax debts. The IRS can declare a taxpayer "currently not collectible," after the IRS receives evidence that a taxpayer has no ability to pay.
mammag replied: You can make payment arrangements with them. That is what my parents had to do.
Kaitlin'smom replied: sorry but that seems rather extreme from 180 to a couple grand in what in 6 months, thats crazy.
lovemy2 replied: That stinks but just FYI - you can't apply a refund for one thing against another with the IRS - you can roll forward or apply a refund toward estimates (if you will need to pay estimates) for the next year but you can't use apples to pay for oranges which is what the stimulus and your regular tax payments are.
$2000 sounds pretty high though for int and penalties - for a return which was due 4/15........
