Odd question - this might be long

Emeraldsmom wrote: I was thinking about the post that Teagansmom wrote about nationalily. Does anyone know if there is some kind of test (blood test, or dna test) to find out what nationality you are? Here is the thing. Dh grew up thinking this one guy was his dad. H lost contact w/this guy when he was like 12. One day Dh's mom out of nowhere tells him there is a chance that this other guy could be his dad. Then she takes it back and says no, that the person who he lost contact with when he was 12 is for sure his dad. Dh looks nothing like his mom or this guy. His mom is white. she has blonde hair, blue eyes, and light skin. The guy that is supposed to be his dad is white. He has light brown hair, blue eyes, and light skin. Dh has dark skin, dark hair and dark brown eyes. His brother and sister who have a different dad are blond and blue eyes. When I first met him I thought he was hispanic, which a lot of people do. Some people think he looks like middle-eastern. And in a baby picture I will post, he looks kind of african-american. When we try to bring it up to his mom, she gets really mad and insist that his dad is his dad. What do you guys think. I will post a recent pic and his baby pic. Just curious on what other people think. Sorry this is long.

Josie83 replied: I really don't know about that, but I wouldn't have thought so . . . hopefully someone else will know something about it? xx

amynicole21 replied: I just heard something about this this week - it was on Regis and Kelly. Oprah took a test and found out she's a Zulu or something... I don't know where you would go to do it though unsure.gif

stanleygirl replied: I heard about something like this on discovery channel, I dont know if the special has aired or not, (I havent seen it yet), but it sounds as if yes they can trace race from DNA.
I think they are going to try to figure out where the earliest humans decended from.
And yes your hubby does look quite dark, my dh is the same way, but his father is finnish, and is quite dark too.

gr33n3y3z replied: his baby pic does look african-american

But your hubby doesnt look african-american you know what I mean?
He looks more Italian

luvbug00 replied: Um I think he looks very latino! Or Italian. You knever know There could've been a darker toned person back somwhere in the gene pool and he has the darker gene. unsure.gif

kimberley replied: my first thought when i saw his pics is that he is arabic. not sure where you would get that kinda test done, but if they can determine nationality from a skeleton, i think they could with a live person too.

Kaitlin'smom replied: well to honest from what I learned in Biology class that is mom and the 'dad' both have blue eyes its virtually impossible to have a baby with dark brown eyes wacko.gif

reason brown is the dominate gene dominate and if one they had the gene they would have darker eyes being brown, dark brown, possible hazel (but most likly not)

I can explain more if you want

so I am guessing the 'dad' he lost touch with is not his bioligical father, and mom knows this and wont admit it for what ever he reasons are

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied:
Is this possible the other way around?? My sister and BIL both have brown eyes, but their middle daughter has blue. They're Italian too and with no doubt both parents child. Just curious, but not to change the post. Other's in our family, including me, have light eyes, so maybe that's where my niece gets it.

I haven't heard anything about these tests, but I bet it would be great to know. Cute baby picture of your DH!!

Kaitlin'smom replied:
yes that is possbile see brown is dominate gene, blue is second so here is an exaple of how you could get blue eyes if mom and/or dad have brown
B=Brown
b=blue

Let say both parents are brown hybrid meaning they have both the brown gene and blue gene

DAD=Bb
MOM=Bb

that give them a 1 in 4 chance of having a blue or light colored eye child

now if they are both blue eyes then they dont carry the brown dominate gene

Dad=bb
Mom=bb

so there child is gonna have light eyes since no brown gene is present

another exapmle one parent is brown and the other is blue (like my parents)

Dad=Brown
Mom=blue

this can go either way, you would have to look at my dad parents and back to see if he is pure brown or hybrid (thats more tricky, but in this case he is hybrid since I have blue eyes)

Dad=Bb
Mom-bb
so now there is a 50/50 chance for light eyes

does this all make sence? if not I can do a grid fo ryou to show you better its kinda hard to explain with out it.

kimberley replied:
yup Di got it perfectly right. my DD Jade is the perfect example...

My mom has blue eyes blonde hair, dad has dark brown eyes and hair
Jamie's mom has hazel brown eyes brown hair, his dad has blue eyes and brown hair (blonde in family history tho)

Jamie has hazel brown/green eyes and brown hair, I have dark brown eyes and hair

Jade has blue eyes and blonde hair. the odds were low but genetically possible because of my mom and his other family.

i loved genetics in HS thumb.gif

Boys r us replied: It IS possible..but the fact that he's so dark and also that the mom "slipped" up and brought mention of this other man..leads inquiring minds to be skeptical!

I personally agree that he looks middle eastern.

ediep replied:
yup, that is exactly what i was going to say. I am a science teacher and that was part of the lessons that I taught.

it is genetically not possible for two blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed child unless there is a mutation somewhere (unlikely)

ediep replied: wow Di!! i am impressed!! Great science lesson!!!

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Cool! Both DH and I have blue/green eyes, so does Wil. So there is no way we would have a second child with brown eyes, right?? Well I guess a DNA test would clear all this up for sure...Good luck!

Emeraldsmom replied: Thanks for all of the responses! I thought I did hear somewhere about the eye color thing. I mean, I totally don't care what nationality he is. I just thought it would be nice to know so Emerald could learn about her history when she is older. Also, it would be nice to know who dh's dad is for health reasons and other things. Thanks everyone. biggrin.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied:
blush.gif thanks at least I remember some things I learned in HS smile.gif I love this part of sience, because it was intersting to me sinc emy grand father has one brown eye and the ither was 1/2 blue and 1/2 brown so we do have a wired mutation in our family history, it did kinda creep me out to look him in the eyes when I was little.
