Ok, WWYD?
coasterqueen wrote: This bed issue is driving me batty. I really don't want to spend any money at all on a new bed or anything of the sort, but my back is always hurting and Dh is confident that it's the bed. The mattress is terrible. It's fine if I'm the only one sleeping in the bed (although my back still hurts) - but if DH gets in bed, I quickly roll to the middle. The mattress sags. It's only about 7 or 8 years old.
Here's my dilemma. IMO if I'm going to buy a new bed frame/mattresses then I want to go with a king. Right now we have a Queen. BUT if I buy a new king bedframe then it won't match my bedroom set I have now. They don't make it anymore and I haven't found anything that matches really well with it. So I'd have a miss-match situation. OR I could just buy a new queen mattress set.
OR
I was thinking maybe just buying a featherbed to go on top of my existing mattress and maybe that would make a difference.
Anyone use a featherbed before?
Dh is game for whatever I want to do. He is NOT game for me buying a whole new bedroom set, which is what I'd like to do to have it match. This set I have now is the 1st set I've ever had match. He said I could if I sold the set I have, but I don't have the oomph to do that. I'm lazy.
So WWYD?
Buy a new king bed frame/mattress set Buy a new queen mattress set Or just buy a featherbed and hope it makes the bed comfortable
moped replied: Karen, are you talking about the headboard not matching?
Personally I would invest in a new king - I say this because we bought a wicked pillow top etc etc and as much as I love my huge comfy bed we should have bought a king.
coasterqueen replied: Yes, the bed frame would not match the rest of the furniture. Right now my set is mission style, but the mission slats are a funky metal instead of wood. So the same slats on the bed are on the night stands.
luvbug00 replied: I say get whatever is going to make you comphy.. why not a new king set? it will last you if you get one that is comfortable and will benifit your sleep hence benifiting your mood and bodyand mind.
moped replied: well I am not sure, but it sounds like you need a new mattress set either way.
It would be find to have mismatched
But I still recommend a king!
grapfruit replied: I have a King and LOVE it! So I'd have to vote King. But I would also want to sell what I had and buy new. Come on! I know you have the Omph! in you! Check out Craig's List for some. I know someone that got a BEAUTIFUL set for like $500. Like dresser w/mirror, head and foot board w/canopy posts, all of it beautifully carved....He may of just lucked out but who knows?
So my vote: King all the way!!
Also, just to add, I don't think the pillow top will help you. Not if it's sagging that bad. Have you flipped the it lately? That might give you some extra time!
coasterqueen replied: I guess I'm also afraid of spending all that money and that not solving my back issues, kwim?
moped replied: But if your current matress sags you should have it replaced either way
coasterqueen replied: Yes, we flip it regularly.
I still don't think I have the oomph to sell it. Our set is the armoire, bed frame, and two night stands. We don't need dressers as we have a walk-in closet that has all of our clothes in it and we get dressed in.
MommyToAshley replied: DH and I just recently bought a new King pillowtop set. We bought a top of the line matress, and so glad we did. OMG, what a difference it has made. We have been looking for a bedroom furniture set, but we haven't found anything that we like. So, for now we are using the king bed with our old bedroom set.
You could always buy a metal or brass headboard ... then it wouldn't matter what kind of wood you had. Just a thought.
Kaitlin'smom replied: Well if it were me, I would get the KING bed and not have a bed frame around it well nothing visiable just the part thats on the floor but no headboard or post kinda thing. Until I could get a whole new bedroom set. I wish I would have done the king when we got new mattress about 7 years ago.
gr33n3y3z replied: how about something like this just to hold you over

coasterqueen replied: Hmm, are platform beds comfortable? I've always had a mattress and box springs. Although for a year or so when Kylie was little we slept on our mattresses on the floor and it wasn't bad, just too low.
lovemy2 replied: I would definately get a King size bed - we have a queen and I am dying to get a king but can't justify getting rid of a $1000 5 year old mattress that is in great shape....
How about a rod iron head board - that would probably go with that mission style and maybe if you had to spray paint the rod iron to match the metal in the mission style furniture.......??
gr33n3y3z replied: I've seen ppl put both mattress and boxspring on them it gives it a little more hight just an idea lol John bought one for his and his GF apartment
moped replied: Wonder what the life of a bed is???
5 years 10 years More
Jamison'smama replied: I also would go for the king. We had the same issue as far as having a set not matching. I went to a place that sells the Sauder furniture and found one that worked well enough until we get a new bedroom set. With our old bed, when it became uncomfortable (and on futons and Jama's bed) we put an egg crate, it helped for a while and is much cheaper than a feather bed.
This is where we bought our headboard, of course you don't have this store but it has links on the sides of the cheaper (put it together-type) furniture brands.
redplaydoh replied: I have mixed feelings on the king/queen issue. But definately do not go with a topper for you existing bed. It will be a waste of $ and your back won't get relief. I am with your DH and think that investing in a good mattress will take care of your back problems. We replaced ours and my back pain pretty much went away.
Calimama replied: I would go for the king and get something similar to the set you currently have. I think you'll really be surprised at the difference a new mattress can make.
gr33n3y3z replied: if your looking for more room with the king size it wont happen bc you both or one of you will still be as close to other LOL
my2girls replied: This is the set I have and this is where I bought it:

It is almost sold out and you can also make 5 easy payments instead of one lump sum!! Plus FREE shipping!! I have had mine for 4 years now and my dh has back problems ( from childhood), but with this bed he gets a very good nights sleep ( so do I!). I will never go back to a tradional bed again!!! We have a regular boxspring that we bought new to go with it. They sell the companion "foundation" ( they are not called boxsprings anymore) also on this website.
coasterqueen replied: Thanks everyone for your advice. We've decided to go looking for a king mattress set this weekend and pick out a cheapy headboard for now. I also get to order my hotel bedding set. DH fell in love with that bedding at the inn we stayed at too, so it was easy to convince him.
Calimama replied: Enjoy it!!
Mommy2Isabella replied: I would say get a new queen mattress. Or just get a king, and wait on to get the rest of the pieces to match.
We have a king, HOWEVER, we dont have anything but the frame, no headboard no footboard. LOL The only bed in the house or room in the house that has all matching furniture is Bella's room, well our living room , but bedroom wise, Bella is the lucky one!
grapfruit replied: We were "gifted" our set (it's only 7 years old and in great shape).
But when it's time to buy new (I think most mattrases are suppose to last like 15-20 years, but that's a guess). I really really really really really want a Select comfort bed. They talk about it on Bob & Tom all the timeSelect Comfort
Only problem: They're expensive
ETA: Ok I looked them up, not bad if you don't need the "foundation"....hmmm....couch is going to be paid off soon, car is too.....do I see a new bed in my future??
Farelle replied: Go for a king!!!! We upgraded from a queen a few years ago and I LOVE it. I had the same dilema you do. There wasn't a mathing frame for our new king, but my DH somehow attached the queen headboard we have to the king frame and it works of. You can't really tell it's too small unless you really look at it. And besides no on ever comes in our room....it's too much of a mess in here
coasterqueen replied: Casey - this is what DH is looking at. They are VERY expensive. I think the one he wants to get is $3500, then the bedding he wants to get is around $900 and then $500+ for a headboard/footboard. He's nuts! They do have no interest, no payments til 2009, though which interested DH. We are going to go look at them as soon as he gets some time - he's working a lot of overtime right now.
kit_kats_mom replied: I say King. I love ours. You don't have to have a headboard. We just have ours on the frame which was like 20.00 bucks.
holley79 replied: I would defiantly go with the king.
grapfruit replied: My aunt and uncle have one and they're AWESOME. *sigh* I've laid in it before and it's amazing....
He must be looking at one of the top quality ones.
moped replied: Can I also point out that when we first got our new bed I was scared to tell Tom that I thought maybe it wasn't right - because it was different. I thought I didn't like it at first, then after a couple of weeks I FELL IN LOVE big time!
DO give it time before you judge - they usually give a 30 day trial!
