Ok now about my horrible hospital horror story

My2Beauties wrote: So Thursday night I start having pains in my abdomen, central abdomen. Honestly - feels like gas blush.gif I could eat, no shooting pains at this point, was a little doubled over but figured gas can do that to ya and figured I'd stick it out. I've never really had bad stomach cramps like this before so I wasn't sure what was going on. I tried Midol, I tried Tylenol, I tried Aleve, I tried everything to get the pain to go away. Tried to sleep Thursday night - wasn't happening. I was extremely uncomfortable all night long. I woke up that morning with shooting pain in my side moving up across the center of my stomach. I called my boss (I had TONS to do at work, I mean TONS, testing to get done etc..major deadlines) and told him I'd be in but I was leaving as soon as I was done with my testing because I was making a doctor's appt. So I go in, stay until about 1:30 (my boss is such a jerk sometimes, he kept sitting there thinking of a million other things for me to do, I was so mad at him, I was in OBVIOUS pain, I mean my facial expression said it all and the fact that when I got up I could barely walk, oh he peed me off that day - but anyways) - my appt is at 2:30. I get there early, go in to see the doc, and he's basically like well why didn't you go to the ER if your pain is that bad? growl.gif Dude, I'm not sure what is wrong, I honestly thought I just had gas ok, seriously or had to take a huge poo if you really wanna know dry.gif growl.gif Can you help me here? I'm here now, what's going on? So he was like well you could possibly have appendicitis (sp?) due to the type of pain you are having but I that isn't as likely because you aren't vomiting and have no nausea. You could also have an infection in your ovaries or uterus causing the pain. He said that he thinks a CT Scan is best and that will determine whether or not I have appendicitis or it's just an infection (no mention of my gallbladder at this point at all). So...my doctor's office is in the same building as this hospital here in town that well has sort of a crummy reputation, I've always heard bad things about people who are admitted there and have surgery there. He is basically ruling out appendicitis and telling me he thinks the CT scan will reveal an infection, they'll give me antibiotics and send me home. I'm in so much pain and I don't feel like driving all the way across town to the nearest hospital or to the downtown hospitals and pay to park, fight traffic, etc...so I opt to go to the hospital next door just for the test. I get there - they sign me in quickly, take me to triage, get me a room, and a nurse is in immediately. She seems to think my symptoms point to appendicitis as well, she has seen people come in with no vomiting/nausea before so she is concerned that is what it is. They take 4 tubes of blood from me and start an IV (why they have to start an IV so they can shoot the dye in me for the CT Scan, they go ahead and give me fluids as well). They determine I'm not preggers with the blood but that my white blood cell count is extremely high. 2 hours later, I finally get my CT Scan. Meanwhile, another doc comes in and is like Mrs. Belk? Um unsure.gif no...I'm not Ms Belk sir so please don't administer any drugs to me that you were about to administer to her laugh.gif he says are you sure?? Gee am I in the psychiatric ward dude? huh.gif Yes I'm sure I'm not Mrs Belk check my hospital bracelet, so he does and apologizes, goes on about his merry way. At this point I'm definitely worried about that mix-up. Gonna ask lots of questions before any drugs are given. They have given me pain meds at this point that make me higher than a kite, I mean I've had pain meds before in an IV and none made me feel like this. I felt awful. So doc comes in and says your gallbladder is swollen but I see no gallstones. We're calling in our surgeon on call to take a look at it to see what he thinks. A while later he comes in, no stones, but looks bad, wanna run a HydaScan on you to see if there are smaller stones that aren't showing up on the CT scan. We're gonna admit you to the hospital. Ok can I eat please, I'm starving, haven't eaten since Thursday night? No - clear liquids only until midnight. After midnight because of the test no clear liquids, no pain meds, no phenergren, no food. dry.gif Seriously!!! He says we'll have the test bright and early and if we determine there is blockage or stones we'll have surgery tomorrow unsure.gif Ohhhhhhhkaaaaaaaaaaay! WOW! I'm freaking - never had surgery before in my life. So they admit me, take me to my room. Give me a glass of Sprite and a pitcher of water. The burse says at 11:30 to call so she can come in and give me a final dose of pain meds since she can't give me anything past midnight. So I do just that, she gives me the pain meds, takes my water, my Sprite, and leaves only the antibiotics and the fluids in my IV and goes away. After the pain meds again I immediately start to feel dizzy, nauseated, and very weird. I pass out snooze.gif So...2:30 in the morning, aide comes in to take my blood again. Ok can you think of a better time to do this. She takes 2 tubes. I realize I have to pee (darn fluids), get up to go to the bathroom, and throw up EVERYWHERE! All over the bathroom floor, 4 or 5 times. I call the nurses (Brian is about to throw up hisself poor guy) and they clean it up. I ask if it was from the pain meds because they made me feel nauseated, she says no it's from your gallbladder. huh.gif Lady - I understand my gallbladder is swollen and I was in pain but in no way shape or form was I the least bit nauseous or sick to my stomach, I didn't feel sick until you gave me those meds. Come to find out they were giving me Delotid (which is basically for after surgery and very sick cancer patients, it's also to be taken with food when the pain is not that severe, which my stomach hurt but come on I didn't just have surgery and definitely don't have cancer - HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!). So - they overmedicated me basically. I had phenergren with it and still threw up everywhere! dry.gif So the next morning, bright & early, 6:30 am the doc comes in and turns the lights on growl.gif and starts pushing in on my stomach. I noticed that I hadn't had any pain meds and my pain was almost gone. He said well your white blood cell count is completely back to normal also. Hmmmm....maybe I just had an infection after all. He said that he ordered my test, they'd be up here no later than 7:30 am to take me downstairs. Fine - let's get this over with so we can find out what's going on! I fall back asleep. Wake up at 9:30 - no nurse, no test. Look at Brian and he was like no one has been in here. Ok....well hospitals are slow so I am being patient. 2 more hours roll by, it's 11:30 at this point. I call the nurse and ask if she has heard anything about my test (mind you I still haven't eaten at this point). Her exact words were - well you know there could be someone bleeding to death in the ER so they take precedence over you. So someone bleeding to death needs to have a HydaScan on their gallbladder you idiot growl.gif growl.gif I'm fully aware that there are plenty of patients in this hospital that are way sicker than me and I have been patient, geez you only said it'd be done 4 hours ago!!!! That really rubbed me the wrong way. She kept saying the ER is busy blah blah blah. 2 more hours go by - it's 1:30 I'm really getting ticked at this point. I call again, she says I'll find something out but they're just busy down there. Then later on she had come in there to change my fluid and I was like geez I am hungry I'd love to eat right about now and she goes, well when you have surgery you don't eat before surgery! Lady - are you kidding me? No one confirmed I was having surgery I'm under orders not to eat because of a TEST - a TEST that I need to take to see if I NEED surgery - idiot! Oh well yeah I know. Yeah right, you just said I was going to have surgery. This is the same nurse that I'd been asking about my TEST since 11:30 that morning. So another hour goes by and I call again, I'm getting impatient and very HUNGRY at this point. She comes flying in my room and was like I just talked to them, they'll be up here within the hour, they were extremely backed up. growl.gif growl.gif Oh she was so RUDE! My dad was getting upset at this point, so was my mom, and so was Brian. I was LIVID! So an hour and a half later, they come up there to get me. I get downstairs, find out the test takes another hour and a half (GREAT!!!). Then the girl goes I'm so sorry I just found out abour your test had I known I would have been here this morning at 7:30. I said excuse me, she said oh yeah we don't hold weekend hours in this department, we rarely do these tests on the weekends, so we're on call. I just got a call an hour ago! OMG growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif My burse had literally just blatantly LIED to me! She outright LIED! Someone dropped the ball and never ordered my test and called in the correct department to have it done. So they do the test, which sucked. Very uncomfortable test. She informs me that this hospital has no second shift radiologist on Saturdays...WHAT blink.gif blink.gif huh.gif ohmy.gif Are you kidding me? So she says the results only take a few minutes for her to get together and send. She said make sure you tell your nurse to let you eat and I'll send these right up. I get back up there (by this time it's past 5:00, obviously if I need surgery it won't get done today). I tell my nurse I'm back, to hook my IV back up and that the lady downstairs said I could eat now. Oh no, can't let you eat until your doctor reads the test results. Ok well page his butt and make him read them. An hour passes - nothing! Call the nurse, well they've been sent up here and they are ready but haven't been read yet. growl.gif Another hour passes - I call - LADY I haven't eaten and it's been 2 hours, read my freaking results or I'm going to go off.Well I'll page your doctor - gee do ya think???? growl.gif So....at this point I call my primary care doctor, kindly let him know that he will have my records transferred to another surgeon and I'm getting the heck outta dodge. He tells me to do whatever I am most comfortable with and that it's up to me who I want to have do my surgery. So....there has to be a microphone in my room because when I hang up with him, the nurse comes in, hey honey (a new nurse now, being nicer but still getting on my nerves at this point), so sorry your doc called back, he was in surgery the past 3 hours (oh and you guys have no idea that he's in surgery, you aren't informed of this, I mean how do you run a hospital when you don't know where the doctors are, they couldn't tell me earlier that day if he had went home yet or not, they had no idea and he wasn't answering his pages)...so ok surgery yeah yeah yeah go ahead...he hasn't looked at your results but says you can go ahead and eat, if you tolerate your food he's going to let you go home in the morning and then schedule outpatient surgery with you. If he hasn't read my results how the heck does he know he's gonna do outpatient surgery and how can he say I can eat....I could probably eat ALL ALONG!!!!! I had no eat/drink orders past midnight because my test was supposed to be at 7:30 am, not 3:30 pm or 4:00 (Whatever time it was)! I could have had breakfast and still had the test done. So I was in the mindset that even if I puke all my food up they won't find out about it, I'm getting outta here. So I have Brian go get me some Loaded Baked Potato Soup from O'Charley's. They conveniently waited until there was nothing left for me to order from the cafeteria. They did bring me some ice cream while I was waiting. rolleyes.gif So I eat it and I'm fine, no throwing up. I hadn't had pains since I had been given antibitiocs for some time, which I found odd. He comes in the next morning and asks how I did with my food, I said fine. He says that I have no stones, no blockage, but my gallbladder is not working properly he suggests I have it removed but it's up to me at this point. Ok you go from emergency removal, to needing it done scheduling it for sure on an outpatient basis (which I wouldn't have done anyways, but that's besides the point) to it being elective???? I said I'll think about it and get back with ya. He gives me his card and says I'm released. I wait 3 more hours before the nurse comes in with my release papers ( i have no home meds, no nothing to put on the forms, easy release, but it takes 3 hours growl.gif ). I go home and I have felt fine since. I am sure my gallbladder needs to come out, I saw it enlarged, I saw the percentages on the test, but I refuse to let this man who works for this hospital do my surgery. He never followed up, he should have followed up after he didn't have my results at 9:30 (when I was just waking up). He flip flopped his opinion around drastically and he had an incompetent staff behind him. He never answered his pages (even in surgery he should have someone answering his pages) and the whole hospital was just a JOKE!

So that was my horror story! If you got through this - then bless your heart! laugh.gif

momofone replied: I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that - I did some reading about IUD's and in rare cases they can affect the gallbladder. Have you thought about removing it maybe.

jem0622 replied: Your story sounds similar to mine when I went in to the ER and it ended up being my appendix. I'll spare you the long story. I just wanted to get better, so I did let a random doc fix me up. Those ER docs are always swamped. I hope you can get in with a different doctor that you prefer and get the gall bladder out. Not fun! I had a friend who was very sick from gall bladder issues.

lisar replied: OMG. Get a second opinion. And I am so sorry you had to deal with all of that. We have one of "those" hospitals here to. No one I know goes to it. I am glad you are feeling better but you sure do need to get it taken care of. Have you made the new dr appt yet?

Kaitlin'smom replied: hug.gif sounds familar to what i went though with DH once at a hospial except they thought it was his heart and was prepping him for surgery, well I went off of the nurse and said I want to see the doc now, never ddi see him he sent his lacky in, I went off as well they did some unnessary things I was not happy about and decided it was not his heart and sent us home.

sorry for my rant, your horror story just brought back bad memories of Dh and his whole epsiode.

glad your feeling better, get a 2nd opinion and if need get it removed before it swells and you have another attack.

hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif

kimberley replied: ohmy.gif hug.gif holy moley! what a lousy hospital! kudos to you for not rolling heads lol. i am sure my patience would have evaporated by 10am! they starved my son for an entire day because he "might" need his appendix out. run the dumb test and let us out to eat! such a hard concept for them! rolleyes.gif

i hope ur doc and the surgery go much better. hug.gif hug.gif

Insanemomof3 replied: Wow that sounds a lot like the hospital I have here!!! That is so crazy, I am sorry you had to go through all that. hug.gif

MoonMama replied: hug.gif hug.gif

A&A'smommy replied: OMG LeaAnn that sounds like the hospital where I live (I drive and hour I refuse to use this hospital!!!!) YUCK!!! hug.gif hug.gif I'm sorry it was so horrible for you!!

msoulz replied: Holy cow, what a story - glad you are feeling better. DH had something similar, I took him in about a year ago as he thought it might be his heart but they ruled that out and they thought it was his gallbladder too, but he got over it and it hasn't bothered him since. After they ruled out life-threatening stuff we went home and he was supposed to follow up with the family doc (he did not, after all, he is a HE) but her office called the house about a week later asking about it because they got the ER report . . .

HuskerMom replied: Oh gosh, I'm sorry you had to go through all that! hug.gif

mckayleesmom replied: What hospital was this LeaAnn.....I had my surgery at the Jewish Hospital for my BR and that hospital was really nice.

luvmykids replied: What a nightmare! ohmy.gif Scary to think what could've happened, I'm glad you're out of there! hug.gif I'd definitely get another opinion on your gallbladder, even though you saw the test results I think after those quacks I'd want a thorough re-check by someone else.

mckayleesmom replied:
The lady that read my gallbladder chart said I had beautiful insides....Me and Leithan laugh about that to this day because my gallbladder had already tore and I was leaking stones....LOL....Makes you wonder where they get their degree's to read these things.

My2Beauties replied:
When you lived here I believe it was called Caritas Hospital but since then it's been bought out and the name changed to St Mary and Elizabeth - either way it's a sucky hospital. Jewish is awesome, I love that hospital. I am going to use Baptist East though, it's really nice and my mom had her surgery there.

Geez - I just realized most of the hospital names in this area are after a Saint or a religion! LOL! laugh.gif
