Organic foods

coasterqueen wrote: I know there was a topic on this not to long ago. Anyways, we ate dinner with my IL's Friday evening and had a very enlightening conversation on organic food. We haven't seen my IL's for a few months now and when we got to their house we were extremely shocked on how thin they looked. So they told us about how they switched to a completely organic lifestyle not decreasing the amount of food they ate and lost a bunch of weight. They explained to us it's all the hormones/chemicals in the meat that cause you to hold on to weight (they explained it more scientifically than I can, though) and when they went to organic meat the pounds just fell off. Actually my step-FIL is too skinny now and says he's trying to eat more stuff just to keep the weight on. ohmy.gif

We learned a lot about organic foods that evening and although we were somewhat skeptic, Dh more than me, it was very interesting. Shockingly enough Dh emailed me this morning with info on how to contact an organic meat person and he wants to do it. So I think we are next grocery day. A lot of the prices are less than what you pay for regular meat in the store too. ohmy.gif Filet mignon is pretty pricey for organic so we might have to go w/regular since we LOVE filets blush.gif . I think our goal is to go as organic as we can, but still eat other stuff as well.

We aren't doing it to lose weight, that would be a plus if it happened, but we liked the idea of the health benefits.

Jamison'smama replied: I would love to go all organic but I have found the prices of meat to be much higher than their non organic counterparts. Where did you find the better priced organic? Do you have to do it through specific companies?

jcc64 replied: Good for you, Karen. If you do just a little bit of investigating, you will discover many more benefits aside from the weight loss thing, which I honestly was unaware of. I for one, like knowing that the animals we are eating have not been pumped full of unnecessary and toxic antibiotics and growth hormones, and are fed a diet that was intended for them, not one that benefits the economic health of the factory farm that raised them. The animals are also treated more humanely, and the meat just plains tastes better. Worth every penny, imo.

There is an organic farmer here in town that sells meat at our local farmers market May - Oct. This is how my IL's found out about him. If you buy something, any quantity of meat once a month every month you get his "membership price" which is a bit cheaper than his regular price. I was just looking at the price list and some like filets, etc are a bit more expensive. I'm not quite sure if his chicken and pork are or not, I need to check that out. But his hamburger beef and patties are $3.00 a pound, which I think I paid almost $4 a pound the other day at the store. I know not everything is as cheap as the store, but DH and I are going to try to make this the one thing we do organically, if we can. So we'll try it out and see. We already planted our garden this year in non-organic soil or we would have done that as well.

coasterqueen replied:
My MIL said the meat tastes better as well. We had organic chicken there a few months ago and we didn't even know it and I remember it tasting really good. Yeah, she also told us of the many benefits besides weight loss. I was shocked on the weight-loss one, I knew of many of the other benefits. They look SO much healthier now with that weight gone and they honestly said they aren't eating any less or differently, except all organic. I was amazed.

Kaitlin'smom replied: Well I guess you then could say the meat I got from MIL cow is organic. They were hand feed grain and straw NO chemicals at all, maybe some cow treats laugh.gif It does tast GOOD I did a roast and OMG was it sooo good. She got ALOT of meat from it it was 1000lbs of meat ohmy.gif

Thanks for the info I do prefer my fruit and fresh veggies organic, just taste better.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: We have a farm a few miles from us where we can get any kind of meat (lamb, beef, chicken, pork and eggs, too) They are also at our Farmer's Market. wink.gif It's MUCH less expensive than the grocery store and you can go out to their farm and tour it which is nice.

For organic vegetables you can join a community garden and you get your veggies once a week or once every 2 weeks. That's a neat idea, but they don't offer it around here.

It is MUCH better for you and for your kids especially. I truly believe that the reason girls are so much more developed at an earlier age is b/c of all the hormones. And I think they are also to blame for the rise in cancer. (among other things)

CantWait replied: Sounds interesting for sure. Good Luck.

coasterqueen replied:
So do you buy from them Aimee?

I do know the pcb's found in water, ground, etc cause birth defects in male body parts. I studied that in college. Very scary stuff.

luvmykids replied:
I've heard this too, not only meat but eggs and dairy too.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Yes...I have bought from them, but we don't make it out to the farmer's market too often so I buy from our grocery store as well.

coasterqueen replied: I wish we could get organic meat at the store. dry.gif But Dh and I go to the Farmer's Market almost every week during May through October. It's part of our Wednesday lunch together. smile.gif

3_call_me_mama replied: Yup that's what we are doing too. We found a local CSA to get our meat adn veggies from. The fresh fruits and veggies are $15 a week for May- October and you get enough for 3-4 people (PLENTY for 2 adulkts and a preschooler and toddler according to the farm) and the meat is sold separate but you get a big discount off the meat if you are par tof teh CSA. That and we go to an all natural health food store to get teh rest of teh stuff that we want organic. ( WE just did the meats form teh grocery store adn tehy are pricey BUT worth it I think caues we are just tryign to cut back on meat in general so that is an incentive and our CSA hasnt' started yet) GOOD luck karen. it's been a great eye opener to us and really a great experience that we are glad we undertook. DH doesn't mind the expense so much now!

coasterqueen replied: Thanks Carrie. We are pretty excited about this new venture too. I'm still in shock that Dh is, but glad. happy.gif It's good taking this healthy step. My MIL and I had several conversations the other night about all different kind of healthy choices, even the cloth diaper conversation, lol. It's really nice that I can have these types of conversations with her and she won't think negatively about me for what choices I make. I really love her for that. I can be open and honest with her and she will be with me and she makes me feel I can make small healthy choices w/o going all out to begin with. KWIM wink.gif
